Wondering how sex has changed in the last 20 years? The most comprehensive U.S. study on sexual health and behavior in two decades sought to shed some light on the traditionally mysterious topic.

The mission of the study was to determine educated generalizations about the sexual activities of the population and thus advance the sexual health of the nation.

Nearly 6,000 participants ages 14 to 92 were surveyed using Knowledge Networks, an online research company commonly used for national studies including government polling.

The lead researchers, from Indiana University's Center for Sexual Health Promotion, include Michael Reece, Ph.D., MPH, director of Center, Debra Herbenick, Ph.D., MPH, research scientist and associate director of the Center, and J. Dennis Fortenberry, MD, MS, pediatric professor at Indiana University School of Medical.

This study was sponsored by Church & Dwight Co., the maker of Trojan brand condoms; researchers stressed the partnership was strictly science based, with the role of the company solely to provide the funding. A comprehensive report of the findings will be published in a special issue of the Journal of Sexual Medicine.

"Men and women are often curious about other people's sex lives," said Dr. Herbenick. "They want to know how often men and women in different age groups have sex, the types of sex they engage in, if they're using condoms or not, and whether they're enjoying sex or experiencing sexual difficulties."

The findings include information on condom use, sexual pleasure and differences in sexual activity based on age and gender. Here are 11 key findings from the study.

Gender Differences In Sexual Pleasure
1 of 12
About 85 percent of men studied reported their partner had an orgasm during their most recent sexual event, while only 64 percent of women reported having had an orgasm.

The data represents a gap in how women experience sex and how men perceive women experience sex.

Findings suggest that men are more likely to experience orgasm when sex includes intercourse, whereas women are more likely to experience orgasm when they engage in a variety of sex acts.

Women not only fake orgasms (on occaision) but they sometimes also hide them. This can occur if she climaxes prematurely. Well, 'premature' is not really the perfect word because the climaxes can repeat or arrive incrementally. But they had a difficult time hinding them from me because the same sensitivity which cultivates these also notices.

75% of women are unable to achieve orgasm through intercourse alone.

75% of men do not know this.

The other 25% are gay.

Speaking only for myself, I am not in the group of "...women who are often curious about other people's sex lives."

As Bette Davis stated many years ago, the only person's sex life I am interested in is my own.

The rest of my comment is: Did anyone consider asking the males in the study which gender their last partner is/was?

If I'm surprised, I suppose my surprise is that the gap is that small. I have (and I have many friends who have) faked on many occasions. Not with the sole intent to deceive, but for many reasons. Just depends on the state of the relationship at that time.

seems the "41" acts included "solo acts" this should be included... frankly for most nothing is better than sex with the one you love the most (yourself )

"The definition of sex is changing" ~ Yes, it is. My partner and I live in different states so ours is 'limited' to cam-sex. Yet we find it quite fulfilling. Thankgod for the internet!

It's because of the North American attitude that you are past it by 45 or so. Compare the rate here to the 75% participation rate for people in their 60`s in France. My husband gave up sex when he was 43 and I was 38; he told me `we`re not teenagers anymore`.

Wow. That's a cruel thing to do to a woman in her late thirties. I hope he reconsidered.
