"The Boombox" Exhibit Opens

The boombox, or "ghetto blaster", has become an emblem of the 80s and early hip hop. From its prominent role in street culture, film (Spike Lee's "Do The Right Thing") and music (LL Cool J's "I Can't Live Without My Radio"), it is a fascinating subject for cultural analysts.

Take a better look at its role as an expressive tool in the new exhibit "The Boombox", which opened Tuesday at the Clic Gallery in SoHo. The show features 25 photographs of boomboxes from the 1970s and 1980s courtesy of collector Lyle Owerko.

Coinciding with the show is the release of Owerko's book "The Boombox Project: The Machines, The Music, and the Urban Underground." The book includes more photographs, a foreword by Spike Lee and a selection of essays from Fab 5 Freddy, Kool Moe Dee, LL Cool J, and others.

The show runs from October 5, 2010 to December 5, 2010
Clic Gallery, 255 Centre Street, New York, NY 10013; (212)-966-2766

I do miss the old Boom Box Days, any poser can listen to an Ipod, it took something real to bring out your box...
