The 13 Most Sexually Healthy Schools

The Huffington Post     First Posted: 10/06/10 02:31 PM ET   Updated: 05/25/11 06:55 PM ET

Columbia University is first in the nation -- in terms of sexual health, that is, according to a new report from the sex experts at Trojan.

The condom giant's fifth annual Sexual Health Report Card looked at 141 colleges and ranked them according to how they performed in 12 areas, with a focus on ease of student access to resources like health clinics, contraceptives and information. Each school was given a "GPA" based on their average in the areas, with 4.0, naturally, being the highest possible rating.

Bert Sperling, owner of the research firm that partnered with Trojan to administer the survey, noted that the university had scored well in previous years, and continues to distinguish itself with Go Ask Alice, a website that allows students to submit questions anonymously.

According to Trojan representative Bruce Tetreault, the company was prompted to write the report by the rising rates of STDs among young people -- they found the numbers unacceptable. And by making students aware of how their schools rank in terms of sexual health, the report appears to be instigating change.

Both Sperling and Tetreault said that all schools have shown improvement in the past five years, and that students at Arizona State and Northwestern University, among others, have taken action in an effort to up their schools' rankings.

Although the ratings only cover a small portion of the approximately 2,000 four-year institutions in the U.S., Sperling said that 30 percent of American undergraduates attend these colleges.

Below, see the 13 top-scoring schools -- the honor roll, if you will. Click here for the full list and detailed methodology.

Hmm. Not to disparage the availability of contraceptives--I'd like to see them freely available within reason as the top schools here have it--I wonder whether, possibly, and I know this is a radical and unacceptable concept, it might be healthy not to sleep around, to practice some form of self-restraint and self-respect (the latter because many sexual encounters happen with at least one person not all that crazy about being there), and to be sexual only with a person to whom you're committed for life. Crazy, I know, but I wonder whether that kind of world--chosen, not mandated--would be in comparison to the one we have, and not only with regard to physical health.

Once upon a time the CDC released a list of all colleges rates of STDs as reported. Granted such reports are not necessarily accurate, but it beats no information at all! Colleges raised cain over it and it vanished into history. Students everywhere should demand colleges release these figures. Wouldn't you want to know if 25% of the people on your campus had some sort of STD?? It might remind you to wrap that rascal!

Impressive that both the big schools in MI are on the list, considering that it's dark and snowy for most of the year there.

The United States is a very predictable country.

Unfortunately, these rankings have little to do with STD rates across the United States. Michigan and Ohio which scored high on this list, are both in the top ten in cases of Gonorrhea per 100,000 (2008). New York, which is the home of several of the schools in this list is ranked 7th in Primary and secondary syphilis cases per 100,000, and ranked 10th in Chlamydia cases per 100,000(2008). Makes you think dunnit? Correlation versus causation.
12:01 AM on 10/12/2010
It makes me think about whether or not those statewide statistics are linked to any of the colleges in the state. If a state has a high STD rate, does that mean the college does? Sexually healthy colleges are related to sexually unhealthy states? This seems to be what you are implying.
