George Clooney Visits Sudan (PHOTOS)

George Clooney has spent the past week traveling around Southern Sudan with Ann Curry, trying to bring attention to the threat of civil war and genocide (scroll down for AP article).

Here are some pics that Ann tweeted earlier this week, along with her captions.

AP:
JUBA, Sudan -- American actor George Clooney is visiting the little known region of Southern Sudan. The U.N. Security Council arrived to a raucous welcome on Wednesday, and the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum also made a recent trip here.

The high-level visits are putting the spotlight on the Texas-sized area of Sudan that is far less known to Americans than the western region of Darfur, where mass atrocities have been committed over the last decade.

Southern Sudan is three months from a Jan. 9 independence vote that could see Africa's largest country break in two. The vote -- and the potential of a new north-south war because of it -- are the reason behind the rash of visits.

"If you knew a tsunami, or Katrina or a Haiti earthquake was coming, what would you do to save people?" Clooney said, according to a blog post by Ann Curry, a reporter for NBC who is accompanying Clooney.

Clooney spent the past week traveling to remote, conflict-prone areas of Sudan's south with John Prendergast, the founder of the Enough Project, an anti-genocide advocacy group.

One photo posted by Curry showed Clooney pointing over a field that Curry wrote was the site of a mass grave from 2008. That was in Abyei, a town that was largely burned to the ground after southern and northern armies clashed there, prompting an estimated 60,000 people to flee. The U.N. reported at the time that at least 140 people died.

Clooney, who declined a request for comment, also visited the town of Malakal, where elements of Sudan's northern and southern armies have clashed twice since the end of the 21-year north-south civil war in 2005.

The group of Americans also talked to villagers in Lul, an area where Human Rights Watch recently documented killings and rapes by southern soldiers against civilians who opposed the ruling Sudan People's Liberation Movement.

When the U.N. Security Council arrived Wednesday, school children lined the streets and hundreds of people at the airport chanted a greeting to America's U.N. ambassador, Susan Rice.

The group also chanted "Welcome, welcome ICC," a reference to the International Criminal Court that has indicted Sudan's president for war crimes in the western region of Darfur. Rice is known for her hardline views on how the U.S. should deal with the northern government, which is headed by President Omar al-Bashir.

The Security Council plans to meet with Southern Sudan President Salva Kiir but will not meet with al-Bashir. Members will also assess preparations for the Jan. 9 independence vote in Southern Sudan and a separate vote that day in the oil-rich region of Abyei.

Officials from the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington spent two weeks in Southern Sudan to assess the likelihood that mass violence will break out following the January vote. Mike Abramowitz, the director of genocide prevention at the museum, said "the next year is a very dangerous time for the civilians in Sudan."

"It is very hard to predict genocide. However, there are warning signs, many of which are present in Sudan," Abramowitz told The Associated Press last weekend. "Today there is an opportunity to avoid calamity, with sufficient international focus and pressure brought to bear on both southern and -- particularly -- northern leaders."

In a speech last week, Kiir said that he and his people have experienced "the anguish of war" and do not want to return to conflict.

It's nice to see that not all celebrities are busy making money, getting hammered, and being chased by paparazzi.

By the way, here is probably the best way to lose the paparazzi: go to Sudan.

However, it feels to me like Clooney's efforts this time might be in vain because international humanitarian work usually fall on deaf ears amidst a turbulent economy and tense political environment (ex. Israel & Palestine).

In other news, Agnus T. Jones, who plays Jake Harper in "Two and a Half Men", signs a two year, 22 episode deal worth $300,000 PER episode (and Charlie Sheen signs for $2 million per episode). Perhaps he should accompany Clooney and see where he could spend some of his fortunes.

I know I am being a Polly Pure Arse about this but it would be nice to live in a world where this was the top headline rather than another Kardashian brouhaha or video vulgarity. Just saying and I know I will be bashed for this. Good deal, George.

Exactly my own feelings. Yesterday I mentioned the same kind of thing but it was moderated. I have sympathy for the Lohans and Montags or whatever for the terrible shape their lives in, but it doesn't make me feel better to watch it happen. I'd rather give them the dignity of dealing with their own personal problems privately and save the headlines for stuff like this. It's sad that people would rather rubberneck than care about serious issues.

I just think of the little girl or boy there in the Sudan that will survive because Mr Clooney took the time and risked his life for people he has no connection to except being part of the human family. He could be enjoying Fall on the shores of Lake Como but he is there in the Sudan in person doing what he can for people he doesn't know and will never know. My best regards to Mr. Clooney.

Whoever monitors this site, needs to pay attention to what gets posted. This is the third time that something I posted was removed when there was nothing indicating it was even pending.

My original comment was that People like George Clooney have to be respected because he is not just a celebrity who writes a check and shows up to answer phones. He gets right into the middle of it and brings attention to those who truly need help. He has my respect hands down, he is awesome. And his friend Brad is second with the help he is providing to the people in New Orleans.

Just another reason why I love Clooney. The man is out there, doing all he can for a cause which barely gets attention from the media here in the US. Such a pity that Lindsey Lohan's exploits get more press than what's going on in the Sudan and similar countries.

George is just cool and as far as I am concern (either way) he gets to keep his top 2% tax cut.

Love him, too and there are too many dimbulbs (i.e., anyone from reality tv or its political equivalent - like Sarah Palin) out there who do nothing for the world. But hell no to that Bush era tax cut!

The issue of the CPA in Southern Sudan is vital to stability throughout the country including Darfur. It is very difficult to get visas into these areas so they are either traveling with others visas or this could be a sign that government officials are willing to ensure that the fragile peace agreement stays in place. I hope it is the latter. There can be success in Sudan and I believe that the President and his Cabinet will keep their promises to bring it about. I know activists on these issues are strong.

It may be premature to say but I get the feeling that al-Bashir is changing his tune. I do think that he understands that secession is inevitable and will want to be more politic because he wants to keep his power place in Khartoum and to do that with less oil revenue he will have to find new ways to engage the world and curry investment in Northern Sudan. While I expect some difficulties with Abeyi, I think that he will not be able to use the violent coertion that he has used in the past. Will the rebel splinter groups keep peace among themselves, though? I wouldn't be surprised if there is some divide and conquer coming up on that front.

Ot at least he would if he were sane, but that i suppose is questionable. He may simply try to scuttle it by any means, but I certainly hope that he has a brain in his head or at least advisors who do. But that.s me, hoping for sanity, always and generally being disappointed.

I hope that you are right blackveil. We must keep the faith. Peace to you.

al-Bashir is nowhere near sane. If he does anything reasonable it's only because people like George are holding his feet to the fire. It's great to hope, but it's better to ACT. Thanks George for staying on the job.

Can't we limit hollyweird-type posts to good deeds like this one. I could care less who the two attention whores invite to their bed or a headline about one or another kardasian (whoever they are, however it is spelled) wearing sunglasses in Maui, but Clooney and Penn and Theron and A-listers like that deserve the column space. How about flushing the other dweebs down AND OUT!

This is about the best thing that can happen before the elections. Mr. Murder knows the world is watching and exposure is totally key to the safety and legitimacy of the vote.

The surprising thing is that Clooney was allowed to enter Sudan.
07:44 PM on 10/07/2010
Maybe that's a good sign that al-Bashir is trying to appear more diplomatic after the ICC. Last time I think Clooney was denied a visa or something because he was a pest and a threat. That says a lot about how things have improved since the campaign to save Darfur began. God willing it will continue.

Great...another opportunity for Bill O'Reilly to bash Clooney and his " liberal Hollywood elitist" pinheads...yet the only thing Bill has contributed is fear mongering and ha tred...

Well at least it's almost Christmas...which gives Bill his most power...whining about how he isn't allowed to celebrate because the govt. doesn't let him...funny if it wasn't so pathetic...

Thank you Mr Clooney, for bravely shedding light on the atrocities in parts of the world most people don't know exists...

2,000,000 have died in Southern Sudan over the last 30 years. I am glad G Clooney is bringing awareness to this issue.
