Despite Bashing 'Obamacare' As Unconstitutional, Joe Miller Admits He Got Government Health Care

Joe Miller Health Care Federal Government

Alaska Senate candidate Joe Miller says his family benefited from Medicaid and a state-run health care program for low-income children and pregnant women.

Miller previously acknowledged receiving federal farm subsidies for land he owned in Kansas in the 1990s, as well as low-income hunting and fishing licenses for him and his wife in Alaska.

As a conservative candidate, he's criticized certain entitlement programs. Sitting Republican Sen. Lisa Murkowski, who's running for re-election as a write-in candidate against him, called Miller a hypocrite.

As The Huffington Post has reported, Miller on his campaign website clearly defines his position on the health care issue:

I support the repeal of ObamaCare. First and foremost, there is no Constitutional authority for it. Currently nearly half of the state governments have filed suit in federal court because they share this view.

Second, even if ObamaCare were Constitutional, its baseline benefit is built upon a crumbling foundation, and it will do nothing to control costs. This legislation adds millions of new beneficiaries to the already broken Medicaid program and relies in part on finding hundreds of billions in savings from the broken and going bankrupt Medicare program. The reimbursement rates on both of these programs are so low that many doctors in Alaska will not see patients or greatly limit the number of patients they will see.

The Tea Party-backed candidate has also reportedly communicated a desire to phase out Medicare.

Miller told the Anchorage Daily News he's struggled in the past, and that there's a proper role for government. He says the question is whether power is held at the state or federal level.

Miller says he hasn't received government assistance "for years."

there is a difference between something being unconstitutional and not being in the constitution the repubs have a hard time understanding that.

Yep. I just reply, "well, jet planes aren't in the Constitution either, and yet we have laws and regulations applying to them."

Gee Miller, if you do away with all the government programs, how is your family going to keep collecting? So far, you've taken advantage of unemployment, Medicaid, government-run healthcare and farm subsidies. Or, do you intend to just keep running for office to use the campaign contributions for your own personal expenses like O'Donnell has?

The main strength of the self righteous is that they have a special gene that allows them to absorb and digest toxic levels of hypocrisy that would cripple and humiliate a lesser being. In essence, there but for the grace of god is transformed into god loves the sinner!

Oh Saaarah. Readin' about your Joe. You remember how during the election you loved raging at President Obama (you know - the guy who won :-) ) about his (tenuous) connection to Bill Ayers and kept talking about how he was palin' around with? Droppin' your "g"s for emphasizin'.

Well, it seems that your pet rock Joe the Tea Bagger has connections (immediate connections) to a radical leftie from those halcyon days of civil unrest. He's a palin'. Which means you're a palin'. (You're all about associations - remember? Let's do some free associatin'.)

Why won't Joe Miller release his records from the Fairbanks North Star Bureau?

He keeps saying the bureau is blocking them - but it's actually him. And as we know - scratch Joe Miller and hypocrisy or corruption comes leaking out. Flip him over and you find all kinds of fraud and grifting crawling around underneath. Whatcha hidin' Joe? You know you're hiding something. ( And there's that term again "North Star". Palin likes that a lot.)

Not surprising. Didn't someone carry a sign asking the government to keep its hands off their Medicare in a bagging rally?

I'm all for stripping members of Congress of all health care provided by the Government. Go get it like everyone else, and get denied like everyone else if you are less than in perfect health.

Or, the better plan would have been to allow the citizens to purchase into the pool that congress has.

Congress has the same health care plan offered to all federal employees. They pay into it. It is not free.

Why didn't he just put the healthcare costs on his own credit card?
04:49 PM on 10/09/2010
I suspect his motive in running for the senate has little to do with changing the world rather than taking care of his own financial issues. It's probably a big pay raise. And, hey, what about those bennies.

When he gets in Office, he can put it on our credit card.Just likeboth the Repubs and the Democrats .

If you are a congressman,or Senator for a single day, you get life long HC and Pension....on our credit card.

That would be both Repubs and Democrats

Are you cognizant that you are posting non-factual items, or are you simply lying?

"Members of Congress receive retirement and health benefits under the same plans available to other federal employees. They become vested after five years of full participation.

As it is for all other federal employees, congressional retirement is funded through taxes and the participants' contributions. Members of Congress under FERS contribute 1.3 percent of their salary into the FERS retirement plan and pay 6.2 percent of their salary in Social Security taxes.

Members of Congress are not eligible for a pension until they reach the age of 50, but only if they've completed 20 years of service. Members are eligible at any age after completing 25 years of service or after they reach the age of 62. Please also note that Members of Congress have to serve at least 5 years to even receive a pension.

The amount of a congressperson's pension depends on the years of service and the average of the highest 3 years of his or her salary. By law, the starting amount of a Member's retirement annuity may not exceed 80% of his or her final salary."

"Promote the general welfare", says so right in the Preamble to the Constitution. What has more to do with the welfare of the citizenry than health.
ThinkCreeps
Seriously, it's time.
03:26 PM on 10/09/2010
The usual interpretation at the moment seems to be that should be to `promote the welfare of generals'

welfare as defined in the Constitution doesn't mean free houses,Healthcare, free money etc etc.

Ever heard the term "General welfare. "? It means well being. Not free stuff. It was written a while ago,so if you missed social studies

A guy with a Yale law degree needed Medicaid and low-income child health care assistance? Really? He must be the worst lawyer to ever graduate from Yale.

The mandate is unconstitutional. Which Obama originally said he wouldn't have in his plan.

Has anyone else noticed that there are a number of Tea Party Candidates who are seeking public office because they seemed to have failed in other jobs. Christine O'Donnell has no employment history to boast about and has lived off of campaign funds in her many failed attempts at public office. Mr Miller's stellar employment has left him having to borrow heavily and to take advantage of FEDERAL programs on several occasions. Now I am no stranger to hard times but I am grateful for the availability of programs from a government who cares about its citizens. (Unemployment insurance, once, Pell Grants for a child, Social Security and Medicare now) Thank God for a strong Federal Government.
