Gwyneth Paltrow Talks About Her Casting Couch Experience (PHOTO)

First Posted: 10/08/10 10:01 AM ET Updated: 05/25/11 07:00 PM ET

Gwyneth Paltrow is featured in Elle's Women in Hollywood issue talking about how she got her start in acting.

When asked whether she has had any casting couch experiences, Gwyneth replied:

"Yup. When I was just starting out, someone suggested that we finish a meeting in the bedroom. I left. I was pretty shocked. I could see how someone who didn't know better might worry, 'My career will be ruined if I don't give this guy a blow job!'"

I have a hard time believing this story is true. Her mom is a well-known actress and her dad was a successful director and her godfather is Steven Spielberg. 1.) Because of her connections this producer likely wouldn't have propositioned her because she's not likely to be as desperate as other actresses for her "big break" 2.) If he did so anyway, she could expose him and not risk hurting her career because she's got connections anyway.

Maybe the person involved didn't realize her connections. I think this sort of thing happens all the time. I had a client once who was in the film industry he told me this sort of thing still existed.

Of course it exists. When you think of the thousands of girls wanting to make it big and only a few of them will, it's impossible to imagine the casting couch isn't alive and thriving.
Of course there are straight arrow producers and directors but I think they are in the minority. And how many women have jumped on the couch trying to close the deal.

If Gwyneth demanded that I put out for a part, I'd bite the bullet and do it. That's how committed I am to my art.

I didn't think that would happen to a child of Hollywood Royalty. I loved her in The Talented Mr. Ripley...

Both her parents were in the business, she didn't have to worry anyway.

So much for 'liberal or family values' leadership in a corporate conservative business model.

I think it should be studied why men like me are aroused by these types of things. It troubles me immensely emotionally, spiritually, and mentally yet it's hard to control what turns you on. Is it me, our society, my generation, men in general, or a phenomenon perpetuated by the adult film industry that is the cause of such a thing, apparently rampantly apparent among many men? Judgments should be put aside, as well as bias and Victorian views of se.x, and try and establish this entire subject: How many men are turned on on by at least porn that acts or is real, of a woman being degraded in some fashion.... and why?

There's only a small market for adult films of men being "exploited", and it's obviously because often it's a male fetish and I'm sure more men by those films than women on average. Why are men opposite?

Again, I'm male, lets keep the rigid PC version of what can be discussed behind us by openly ( and not throw around words like "sexist") looking into this from a sociological, psychological, and ethical standpoint and discussion it's implications. Perhaps there's nothing wrong with it, but my conscience tells me otherwise.

You can email me at gmail.com, the same as my user name on here, except with the middle initial M as well after Ron, if you find the mental aspect of it interesting as well and want to share thoughts.

Weird, I always thought "casting couch" was just the website that is either fake or acts legitimate to the women who are "auditioning". I didn't realize they took the name from the real world concept of it happening. That makes me sad as a human, not that I didn't already know it, but that some of us get off to things that are so utterly disturbing from the "partner"'s perspective should really be examined more. Getting off to the idea of a woman having to exploit herself to get ahead, or at least finding it appealing if she's willing to do such a thing, is something I myself must confess has been an interest. As a 25 year old male who was 12-15 when the internet really took off, and grew up entirely in the internet p.orn generation, I can tell you that from my experience is that at least 60-70% of what I've seen at it's core attracts men because of it's degradation of the woman. "Money shots" aren't extremely common in most s.exual acts but I read once they're in something like 90+% in both amateur and big business p.orn. There's clearly a huge fascination here for men that doesn't exist as much in the real world. I've only met one friend who wasn't turned on by it, and I know most like it because it makes them feel superior (or something similar).

that's funny, there was a "casting couch" back when movies were first being made, in the days of DW Griffith, Mack Sennett, Charlie Chaplin etc!

every one of the lead actresses in a Hitchcock film, with the exception of Grace Kelly(The Rear Window), had to do a BDSM session with Hitchcock. Tippi Hedren(The Birds), who now runs a big cat sanctuary just north of LA, and is Melanie Griffith's mother, is on record as describing Hitchcock as a "sick perverted little man" (or something like that).
