Meg Whitman Called 'Whore' By Someone In Jerry Brown's Campaign

The Huffington Post   First Posted: 10/08/10 01:12 PM ET Updated: 05/25/11 07:00 PM ET

Meg Whitman Whore Jerry Brown

Someone in Democratic California gubernatorial candidate Jerry Brown's campaign was unwittingly recorded calling his GOP rival Meg Whitman a "whore."

Brown made a call in September to the Los Angeles Police Protective League and left a voicemail to talk about netting its support. The intentional portion of the message was apparently tame, until it became clear that the candidate had forgoten to hang up the phone. Here's the conversation between Brown and his staffers that followed:

"Do we want to put an ad out? I have been warned if I crack down on pensions, I will be -- that they'll go to Whitman, and that's where they'll go because they know Whitman will give 'em, will cut them a deal that I won't," Brown says.

"What about saying she's a whore?" an unidentified voice interjects.

"Well, I'm going to use that," Brown says. "It proves you've cut a secret deal to protect the pensions."

The Los Angeles Times puts the discussion in context:

With frustration, Brown discussed the pressure he was under from police unions to pledge not to reduce public safety pensions. Months earlier, Whitman agreed to exempt public safety workers from part of her pension reform plan: the bid to enroll new government workers in 401(k)-style plans instead of pensions

[...]

The situation, in which Whitman was receiving a labor endorsement while supporting the union's position on pensions, is a reversal from the usual position the two candidates have been in. Unions have been a mainstay of Brown's campaign and have spent millions of dollars in a bid to help get him elected. Whitman has repeatedly charged that Brown would be unwilling to confront the rising costs of civil service pensions.

The Whitman campaign responded Friday, taking offense to the slur:

"The use of the term 'whore' is an insult to both Meg Whitman and to the women of California. This is an appalling and unforgivable smear against Meg Whitman. At the very least Mr. Brown tacitly approved this despicable slur and he himself may have used the term at least once on this recording."

The Brown campaign has since released a rather abrupt statement:

"This was a jumbled and often inaudible recording of a private conversation. At times our language was salty. We apologize to Ms. Whitman and anyone who may have been offended."

WATCH:

Though Meg Whitman has spent record-setting expenditures of $140 million on her own campaign, she has also been plagued by allegations of an undocumented Mexican housekeeper, Nicky Diaz, who claims that Whitman was aware of her immigration status throughout her employment. Earlier this week, another former Whitman employee came to Diaz's defense.

HuffPost Pollster's latest analysis of the race shows Jerry Brown with slim leads over Whitman.

Pete Wilson, Whitman's campaign chair, 2/3/1995, for the *record* as reported in the San Francisco Chronicle ( source: http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/e/a/1995/02/03/NEWS901.dtl )

“I don’t blame the judge; he is interpreting the law,” Wilson said during a speech before the National Association of Wholesalers Wednesday. “I blame the Congress for being such whores to public employees unions that they would pass that kind of legislation.”

This was for the record (a speech he gave)- not a private conversation.
This was not a staffer, this was Pete Wilson, Whitman's Campaign Chair
And, for the record, there *were* women in Congress "way back" in 1995...

And with that, her unbroken string of hypocrisy continues:

1. People should vote -
Unless you are me, Meg Whitman: I didn't bother to vote for nearly 30 years - the rules don't apply to me.

2. We should get tough on employers who hire illegal aliens -
Unless you are me, Meg Whitman - the rules don't apply to me.

3. We should stand up to the unions and not kowtow to them -
Unless you are me, Meg Whitman - the rules don't apply to me

4. I condemn people who use the word "wh*re" - it's sexist and insulting to all women -
Unless you are me, Meg Whitman, and your campaign chairman Pete Wilson uses it - then it's ok. The rules don't apply to me.

What an accomplishment - you can't help but admire her.

Ah, the birth of a new logic, and I was alive to see it.

Per the Whitman camp, if a staffer refers to Whitman as a "wh*re" (because she has sold her integrity for a promise of endorsement), then that constitutes "insulting all the women of California."

Presumably, by that logic, if anyone in the Brown camp says something nice about Whitman, they must also be saying something nice about all women in California.

Prior to the announcement of this new "Tractatus Logico-Philosophicus of Whitman", I'll bet that no one knew that Meg Whitman represents all women in California, and as such, feels what they all feel, thinks what they all think, and reacts as they all react.

It's good to know that on the Right, individuality and thinking for oneself is considered just too much for "most" women to handle, and that, thankfully, there exists Meg Whitman to serve as intermediary and as arbiter as to what words mean, to whom, and in all contexts.

OMG! I'm a CA Native and also female. If SHE represents all of us (and I don’t know HOW someone who has only lived here 12 years can do that anyway,) then we're in worse trouble here than we thought! I'm also an old eBay seller who took personal financial hits from her "policies" while she was there. If I saw Meg in PERSON, I'm afraid I'd want to slap her right across the face! She doesn't represent ME, baby! Not in the LEAST!

As reported on Faux News from an unnamed source. Now logically, if it was Brown's wife, and Whitman knew this, why on earth would she keep quiet about it? The obvious answer is the correct one, SHE WOULDN'T. Therefore, it follows that this is just another Faux News fabrication.
06:34 PM on 10/14/2010
Oh no, it's totally true, and actually she was just scolding the dogsitter over her cel phone at the time. It was totally unrelated...and why anyone would even think it was a reference to Whitman, I can't say.

This gaffe will go down in history as representative of progressive attitudes and strategies against women.

It's disgusting. And NOW supports it.

It will draw even MORE attention to the mama grizzlies. It's not right. It's not fair. It's not good politics. And it's nothing but pure old-fashioned sexism.

Do not try to sell people otherwise.

American workers think this REAL "gaffe" IS HISTORY. . .

While Whitman was CEO of eBay(1998-2007), the number of overseas workers at the company increased by 666%. By 2007, nearly 40% of eBay's jobs were outsourced. Whitman also ordered layoffs during her tenure, claiming that the company had "fåt that could be trimmed." By 2008, the company had laid off more than 10% of its workforce. Under Whitman, while laying off workers, eBay repeatedly lobbied for increasing H-1B visas to foreign workers, who are often paid less and have fewer rights than workers hired in America. During her time at eBay, Whitman received about $500 million in compensation and stock options and charged the company and its shareholders nearly $3.2 million for the use of a company jet.

What a silly thing to say.

The fact that you are able to sexualize what is clearly a reference to a quid pro quo action on Whitman's part is not only creepy and disturbing, but it also presents Whitman as weak, fragile, and wounded.

There's no controversy about what was meant (other than from those who would benefit by making it appear as though there is one).

The issue is: Whitman has promised special treatment in exchange for an endorsement, contrary to her stated positions, and in sharp distinction with Brown. This, certainly, merits the term.

That you can find something sexual or sexist in this means that somehow you believe that the Brown staffer was thinking of Whitman sexually when she said it. Seriously? That's just... bizarre and frankly, kind of yucky.

As if the Whitman staffers are perfect angeles. Her entire campaign has been one mud slinging lie after another ... I think Brown's staffer was being truthful under the circumstances ... Meg's political boat is about to sink and she desperately needs something negative against Brown right now ... so she'll blow this up like it was a political life raft and try to float on it until election day. But by then her campaign will be dehydrated and sunburnt and dried out as the few strands of her hair.

Interesting how somehow the phone did not hang up ... in a staff meeting of all places ... hummm.

Too bad Brown's political record is so terrible. A better Dem candidate would have made this all a non-issue.
