DNC Makes Major Ad Buy Accusing Chamber Of Potentially 'Stealing' Election

First Posted: 10/10/10 09:35 AM ET Updated: 05/25/11 07:00 PM ET

Ratcheting up the debate over the influence of outside groups in congressional elections, the Democratic National Committee has made a major ad purchase pushing the case that the November elections could very well be "stolen" by foreign influences.

The committee is airing a spot on national cable this coming week that turns an already harsh spotlight on the roles being played by former Bush strategists Karl Rove and Ed Gillespie in addition to the Chamber of Commerce. Pivoting off reports that the business lobby has used foreign donations for its campaign activities, the spot ends with fairly conspicuous if not ominous shot of Chinese currency being stacked up -- ostensibly for use against Democratic candidates.

"Karl Rove, Ed Gillespie: They're Bush cronies. The US Chamber of Commerce: They're shills for big business," the ad goes. "And they're stealing our democracy. Spending Millions from secret donors to elect Republicans to do their bidding in Congress. It appears they're even taking secret foreign money to influence our elections. It's incredible, Republicans benefiting from secret foreign money. Tell the Bush Crowd and the Chamber of Commerce - stop stealing our democracy."

The spot, timed to preempt Rove and Gillespie's appearances on the Sunday talk show circuit, echoes what has quickly and clearly become the closing argument Democrats (from the White House on down) are making as the election nears. But it comes at a time of conflicting reports over the veracity of the charges. On Saturday the New York Times published a story questioning a basis of the report uncovering the Chamber's foreign pools of cash. Specifically, the story quoted White House counsel Bob Bauer acknowledging that there was no specific evidence that the Chamber had crossed legal lines by using foreign money for its electioneering.

"The DNC ad is rubbish," said Tom Collamore, senior vice president of Communications and Strategy for the U.S. Chamber. "The U.S. Chamber will continue to discuss ways to create jobs and grow the economy no matter how often others may try to change the conversation. We've been working for growth, jobs, and opportunity for 100 years and we won't be deterred now."

The Center for American Progress, which runs the Think Progress site that published the original report, has responded to critics by noting that the fundamental question at the heart of the debate had still not been answered: "How many foreign sources of funding does the Chamber have?" A spokesman for the DNC, likewise, pointed to a lack of transparency and disclosure on the part of the Chamber as the basis for the ad.

"They all can, of course, clear all this up by releasing their donors," said DNC Communications Director Brad Woodhouse. "We just think that it is vital that the American people know that this election is on the verge of being stolen by secret donors, anonymous special interests, and possibly foreign corporations. And these folks aren't lurking in the shadows refusing to reveal themselves and their intentions and interests because they have the greater good in mind. It's because they want to get their fingers back in the till and exert the influence they had when Republicans were last in charge."

I find it surprising......well o.k. not really since you can smell the desperation and fear. A left wing blog makes up things and the PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES runs with it??

Thank goodness even that right wing rag the New York Times calls foul.

Basically what we have here with the accusations and innuendo and then the demands of tell us who your donors are is a pot calling the kettle black. But even worse is the total disregard for innocent until proven guilty. The administration and DNC are shouting at the top of their lungs "GUILTY, GUILTY GUILTY UNTIL YOU PROVE YOUR INNOCENCE. As a liberal leaning independent most of the time, these accusations have pushed me to vote Republican on November 2nd. Never in my life time have I seen a president so given to throwing out accusations and blame. The lack of respect for the dignity of the office is unprecedented. I recall when McCain actually called out a woman during the presidential campaign for saying Barack Obama was a Muslim. This president would never do that, would never publicly correct a member of his party or supporter and that is a shame.

Well said.

The NY Times article actually said there was absolutely no evidence for these charges.

The Chamber takes in less than 100K of foreign subscriptions out of a total of 200M subscriber revenue stream. They carefully separate these dollars, not that they would statistically matter anyway.

I am appalled by many things this President has done but this may be the worst. He has accused the US Chamber of Commerce of a serious charge, not only without any proof, but with reputable sources stating the contrary. This is a serious breach of ethics, if not a clear abuse of power by the executive branch.

He has even repeated these spurious charges for potential political advantage.

The Office of the Presidency has been besmirched.

Black, white, or purple the color of his skin doesn’t give him the right to disparage the Office of President. I haven’t seen such blatant politicization of the Office in my many years of political engagement.

Whether you and I agree on policy, if this isn’t corrected soon, we will no longer have a Country to argue about.

I worry.

And it turns out after actually looking into this... they found nothing... and that's coming from The New York Times and the Annenburg Foundation and both have categorized the entire issue as 'baseless'

There is no bigger anti-American shill than the squatter in the White House Barry Sotero. George Soros also not American bought him, yet that's not a problem for the left. Therein lies the true hypocrisy. Attacking the right for doing that which the left does is in poor taste. Not to mention that there are no laws being broken here, i.e., Citizen United. It is the Democrats who traffic in slavery......of Americans, i.e., welfare, food stamps, serfdom.

The purpose of those here on this string is to dissuade, distract and deflect this discussion away from the undeniable fact that the forms used by the Chamber of Commerce, to solicit funds from foreign sources, directs deposits to the same accounts used to pay for political attack ads. This is not a baseless case indeed it is prima fascia evidence worthy of a warrant. The Chamber of Commerce does not deny this fact nor do any news articles referenced by many here. The exact dollar amount involved is incidental to the fact a crime is being committed. Money is a fungible commodity and the co-mingling of legitimate funds with illegitimate funds for purpose of criminal activity is a prosecutable endeavor itself. Citizens United does not bear upon the facts of this case. The SCOTUS majority decision only permits “citizens†of the USA the privilege of free speech. That privilege does not extend to NON-citizens. Think Progress has done a service to this country, shedding light on the potential of foreign entities to influence our elections.
All Americans Should stand together and demand an injunction and search warrant be served on the Chamber Of Commerce.
The United State of America has fought many wars to protect our sovereignty. We cannot permit a back door assault to prevail. A million man March On Washington should be our first response. It is time to take back our country from those who would sell her for profit and personal gain.
06:21 PM on 10/12/2010
1/2: @notfir2: I agree and that is great information. Yet I think the suggested march is a little late TOO LATE since there are those who'd rather be wrong than right. I heard yesterday that the Repubs are at the moment spending $ 2:1 or 3:1 v. the Demos for campaigns. It was entities like these that sold off what already has been prostituted for favors, votes, & anything else money can buy. They accuse the Demos of the same things. When the court sided for those who are in question by making it easier to funnel money and call it legal, they got the leeway to hide whatever they will from the people, they don't have to show where it came from. They have excuses that will help them and hurt us, if Providence doesn't step in and March us right out of this mess.

The rich are giving our country away faster than our children grow. My fear is, though, that so many people are so brainwashed about this division that they wouldn't accept that what hurts one hurts all, because they are so divided in thought they treat it as if we are NOT ONE country. It really makes that mind-set see friends as enemies and enemies as friends.

Glad I came by to read your 1/2 and 2/2.
The Irony of TP

The money powers prey upon the nation in times of peace and conspire against it in times of adversity. It is more despotic than a monarchy, more insolent than autocracy, and more selfish than bureaucracy. It denounces as public enemies, all who question its methods or throw light upon its crimes. I have two great enemies, the Southern Army in front of me and the Bankers in the rear. Of the two, the one at my rear is my greatest foe.. corporations have been enthroned and an era of corruption in high places will follow, and the money powers of the country will endeavor to prolong its reign by working upon the prejudices of the people until the wealth is aggregated in the hands of a few, and the Republic is destroyed.-Abraham Lincoln

06:23 PM on 10/12/2010
2/2: @notfir2: We have been imperialists so long, we have lost sight of taking care of in-house business and find ourselves looking out over the horison, trying to establish our principles and wills in other places, not even allowing their input, whereas they tell us to go home and stay. That's why nothing much lasts. That, too, is why we have so many enemies (government-wise), and why we should stand together as you said. One drawback I find is lethargy. Some people in this country treat our freedom and the lack of as if it's a gang war and nobody reports wrongs because they don't want to GET INVOLVED. If we have a downfall, that outlook will be in the middle of it.

Someone fought to get our freedom. We should do all we can to ensure we keep it, short of criminality or wrong-doing of any kind.

I think it's a bad strategy. Obama should just get out there and talk about changes he wants to make and ask for the support he's going to need in congress to make them.

Are the Democrats so afraid of their own ideas that they don't want to talk about them?

Don’t forget where this lie started…at the Soros-funded Center for American Progress. And Axelrod got the smear from the Soros group and ran straight to the Sunday morning shows.

They are trying to attack American business & industry in any way they can. And it’s truly a stoopid plan of attack. They are acting like middle school children. How is this suppose to persuade people that they are competent? Unbelievable…

95% of people who belong to the C of C own small businesses. So let's make them the "villains" this week, because attacking Fox didn't work, attacking Limbaugh didn't work, attacking Rove didn't work, let's attack the guy next door, the guy who fixes your cars, the lady who owns the local craft store. "The most intelligent President ever" simply isn't.

"The DNC ad is rubbish." Prove it! Demonstrate to the American electorate that foreign powers are not laundering money throung the Chamber of Commerce to the campaigns of a huge crop of Manchurian Candidates. The specter of Republican candidates being owned by China or India or Saudi Arabia is very real in this election. Prove to us that you are not aiding and abeting the takeover of the United States by foreign powers. Pardon us if we don't take your word for it.

Funny, this is America, and the accuser bears the burden of proof, not the accused.
07:06 AM on 10/13/2010
Not relevant. This is not a court of law but the arena of public opinion where hyperbole, half truths and outright lies are the tools of the trade and exposing them is everyone's responsibility. So once again I call on the Republicans to prove to the electorate that they are not Manchurian Candidates bought and paid for by foreign powers.

The DNC ad is rubbish,' said Tom Collamore, senior vice president of Communications and Strategy for the U.S. Chamber."

What isn't rubbish is that Congress under both the Republicans and Democrats is under the control of ultra-right wing, neo Nazi corporate interests, which definitely have the Chamber of Commerce by the cojones, and are using the Tea Baggers as a blunt instrument for taking us back to the administration responsible for America's economic and military decline. George W. Bush and the eight years of retardation under the Party of Kooks and Crazies.

American minority groups of every description, gays, lesbians, independents, disenchanted Republican liberals, and progressive Democrats had better wake up and smell the fascist coffee burning on all the burners now.

Those who betrayed our Democracy and have been in the back pockets of bankers, realtors, insurance companies, and Big Pharma now want even more power to destroy the remnants of that democracy.

There is no way less than 2 years after President Obam's historic election that the Republicans and the fringe group of Tea Partiers could have won the minds of Americans.

The Fix is In.

Be prepared to challenge each and every Republican win in your state. Stand up and make sure ALL the votes are counted. Get to your polling station and get in the face of Republicans that are intimidating voters.

The wind just blew into my face from those dang Republicans who knows our election is backing their campagnes. So is it enough for them to finally turn their back on the party an do the right thing? The choice of Palin by Mccain made this long time Republican vote Demacrate in 2008. It's up to each one of us just how much we are willing to give up to stay with a given party. Are u willing to let Foreign coutries steal your election an your country just because u decide that u want to stick with the R no matter what they do to u/your country?
