Biomethane Gas From Sewage Water Heats UK Homes (VIDEO)

WATCH: UK Residents Heat Homes With Gas Recycled From Their Own Sewage

This video from BBC takes a look at how a couple hundred Oxfordshire residents are becoming the first in the UK to heat their homes with gas recycled from their own sewage waste.

Fortunately, the end result is nowhere near as nauseating as it may sound. The sewage goes through a 23-day treatment process before it is turned into gas, void of any pungent odors, that is then injected back into the grid to be delivered to residents.

Anaerobic digesters are used to collect the methane gas from the waste water. That "dirty" gas is then processed by removing the carbon dioxide and becomes suitable to run a kitchen stove or operate a central heating unit.
