Newt Gingrich Spams Doctors: Give Me $5000 And I'll Give You A 'Prestigious' Award

Gingrich

Physicians across the country were greeted these past few weeks with a mysterious fax purporting to be from former House Speaker Newt Gingrich.

There was some good news to share. Gingrich had settled on the 100 or so doctors who would receive his "2010 Champions of Medicine." An email informing his staff as to who had "made the cut" was pasted onto letterhead and sent to the award winners. The subsequent pages included an invitation from Gingrich's conservative group, American Solutions, to an election night event in Washington D.C., were recipients could take in returns and toast the beginning of the end of the president's health care law.

"I am having a party in Washington at the historic Ronald Reagan Building on Election Night, November 2 to honor you and a few of the others who have been selected to receive this prestigious honor," the letter from the "Desk of: Speaker Newt Gingrich" reads. "I decided to have this ceremony on Election Night for two reasons. First, I wanted you to meet a few of my close friends who will be in attendance. But most importantly, I wanted to surround myself with the best and brightest this country has to offer on the night that we set the wheels in motion to repeal Obamacare and replace it with real, meaningful reform."

Attached is an image of a plaque, embroidered with the American Solutions title, sitting on a desk, with the words "This would look great in your office" scribbled above.

With the promise of proximity to power and the allure of mutually shared disgust for Obamacare, the invitation is framed as a celebration of the private health care over government intrusion. It's also a bit of a sham. There is no mention of the fact that attendance at the event costs $5,000. Nor, for that matter, is there an explanation as to what merits qualifies someone for the 2010 Champions of Medicine" honor; or that hundreds, if not thousands, have received the same fax.

That information is pushed on you once you call American Solutions for additional details, as instructed on the fax and as I did after my mother, a doctor, received her own copy. "She will be honored at the party during a recognition ceremony," a spokeswoman for the group explained to me. "It will be a historic night and a lot of fun. Newt will be broadcasting nationwide from the Ronald Reagan building with minute-to-minute updates on the election."

The spokesperson went on. If I wanted to bring seven other people with me, I was told, I could reserve a table for a bargain-basement price of $15,000. As for accommodations, Gingrich had "reserved a block of rooms at the Willard Hotel," which I'd have to jump on fast.

"If she attends, it will be great for her practice and allow her to spend some quality time with Newt," I was told. And if I attended along with my mom, "You should wear a dark-colored shirt so you will look good on camera."

An official agenda and itinerary was attached to the fax, noting that Gingich would be taking photos from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. The Business Roundtable, an association of chief executive officers at large U.S. companies, is hosting an event beforehand at the Willard. Afterwards there would be "exclusive networking opportunities with America's top business owners & physicians." Whether or not elected officials would be there wasn't clear. "There may be but I don't have that information," said the spokesperson. "His closest friends and advisers will be there. Some of them may be candidates, some of them may be in the House or the Senate."

Despite carrying the tinge of a tired used car-salesman's pitch, solicitations like these are not uncommon in the shadowy world of fundraising and politics, though usually they are done with a bit less pretense.

Gingrich, it should be noted, is seemingly a fan of the blast-fax, fake award fundraising method. He's used it in the past. In September 2009, Gingrich's group sent alerts out to an unknown group of businessmen and women alerting them that they had been named "2009 Entrepreneur of the Year." Embarrassingly, a Dallas topless club owner was among the recipients, forcing American Solutions to retract the invitation.

I do hope psychiatrists will be in abundance at this gathering. Bring business cards, there's a plethora of potential business if they show, in that room. Of course, between Newt's ego and that of most doctors' egos, a very large room will be required...LOL..

Fundraisers like this are common in politics. Again, this is not news. And Newt did a great job during his time as speaker, until the Clinton impeachment got out of hand. However, how do you deal with that? When Clinton lied under oath, you had to persue impeachment, even though everyone knew he was not going to get removed from office. You cannot let a President (and lawyer for that matter) sit and lie in front of a grand jury without severe punishment. Yet, politically, going after the President was going to cost big political capital.

And yet, Bush, Cheney, Rumsfield, just to name a few, walk freely without "severe punishment" for lying to us on oh so many, many occasions....

First of all, Clinton LIED TO A GRAND JURY. Very different. 2) You may judge them as liars, I do not.

lol, for a mere $5000.00-$15,000.00, of course. Bah!

Such as? From some who wants Social Security to, "whither and die on the vine", I doubt he has any plans to replace healthcare with anything that would be helpful and appealing to the middleclass or the working poor.

Does someone want to remind the ol' Salamander that he refused to enact 'meaningful reform' when he had the opportunity? While a certain Clinton President (What was his name again? LOL) was trying to get that meaningful reform through Congress.

Who doesn't believe that Sarah Palin is selling her "endorsements," either for cash or future quid pro quos? It's the way politics works. Newt is just more brazen because he thinks he's at the top of the GOTea food chain.

Right, except the last one she sold in the least populated state in America is backfiring on her big time. The dud is a joke! LOL

I used to run a health care organization back in the day when Tom Delay was in the House. Our company was doing bad, and we had a rough time. And I'm a democrat. But it did not stop Tom Delay's organization from sending us a letter to recognize our organization for a Small Business of the Year Award. All we needed was $600. I called for the fun of it and initially was put on hold, and believe it or not, when they came back on, apologized "for the DELAY". I could hardly contain myself. Anyway, to wrap it up, I told them I was a democrat and they said no problem. Then I told them of our plight and they said, "how about sending in just $100. These folks are political whores. They cut deals for $$ or legislative support. Its the dark face of politics.

I never sent anything in, but as long as Delay was in office, I got one of those letters regularly. And I am happy that they "apologized for the Delay". Someone had to.

The best thing that can be done to improve healthcare in this coutry is to separate it from employment. That wasn't done, what we got is "better than nothing" and it will add several million uninsured to the insured citizens list but it will never suit the republicans because it was done by the democrats.

My husband has a man working for him with advanced prostate cancer. He has a family of 3 kids and a wife he provides health care for through his job. A job he struggles to keep because he is recieving treatments that make it hard for him to work. This is a union company but despite the fact that he is getting special treatment that other members are not, no one has complained. They allow him to keep the hours he can, he comes and goes when he is capable and he keeps his insurance. I am proud of my husband for convincing his bosses to allow this man to work this way!

Another point about jobs and insurance not being compatable, people when hiring someone will hire the most healthy and not neccessarily the most qualified person, maybe age is the issue, maybe weight is, in order to keep the costs of their overall insurance down. Therefore this idea of the republicans to raise the age of retirement is going to crash down on us all when a bunch of 70 year olds search for employment, they can't all be Walmart greeters!
