Porn Actor Tests Positive For HIV In Los Angeles

LOS ANGELES — More than half a dozen pornographers in California's multibillion-dollar adult entertainment industry have halted production after an actor tested positive for HIV – and more shutdowns were expected.

Vivid Entertainment Group and Wicked Pictures were among the companies that announced production halts as a precaution.

"From Vivid's perspective, there was no question that when we heard this, we immediately shut down production and said let's get the facts and evaluate them before we move forward," Steven Hirsch, the founder of Vivid, one of the largest makers of adult films, said Wednesday.

"Adult entertainment companies act responsibly, and no one wants to see another person test positive if there's anything they can do to stop it," he said.

Actors in movies by Wicked Pictures use condoms. Still, company president Steve Orenstein said two shoots were on hold and production depends on further HIV test results from a clinic that serves the industry.

PinkVisual Productions is also slated to halt production for at least a few weeks. Adult Video News reported additional shutdowns at Hustler Video, Digital Playground, Jennaration X Studios, Girlfriends Films and Kick Ass Pictures.

The identity and gender of the HIV-positive actor have not been released by the Adult Industry Medical Healthcare Foundation, the clinic where the case was discovered. The clinic was working to identify and test on-screen partners of the actor.

Since the 2004 outbreak, 25 cases of HIV have been discovered at the AIM clinic and at least 8 of those were adult film performers, said Dr. Robert Kim-Farley, the communicable disease director of the Los Angeles County Public Health Department.

County public health officials and state occupational health officials have said the widespread lack of condom use on porn sets puts performers at risk of contracting HIV and other diseases. Adult film producers have said viewers find condoms to be a turnoff.

"We strongly feel that condom use should be required in this industry; just like a construction worker wouldn't go into a construction site without a hard hat, an adult industry performer should not be having sexual acts unprotected without a condom," said Kim-Farley.

Last year, a woman tested positive for HIV after making an adult film, and in 2004 an HIV outbreak affecting several actors spread panic in the industry and briefly shut down productions at several California studios.

In recent years, advocates and health officials have tussled with porn producers and free speech advocates over the use of condoms in adult films.

State workplace safety officials at Cal/OSHA are considering strengthening rules designed to prevent transmission of disease by requiring the use of condoms in the films.

Health and workplace safety officials say they have called on the clinic where the case was discovered to share redacted records that would indicate an infected worker's employment history, but the clinic has not complied.

Lawyers for the San Fernando Valley clinic said it was in full compliance with reporting and privacy laws, and health officials have overstepped their bounds in the past.

The lawyers said in a statement Wednesday that a Northern California judge has gone so far as to stop state officials from getting identifying information because it violates medical privacy regulations.

HIV is spread most often through sexual contact but can also be contracted through sharing contaminated needles for drug use, infected blood products, or by babies born to or breast-fed by infected women.

HIV is the cause of AIDS, an immune disease that gradually destroys the body's ability to fight illness.

In an average month, Vivid spends $250,000 to shoot four movies, which require a total of 12 to 15 days of shooting, Hirsch said.

The company currently has a stockpile of unreleased movies, and it would take months without any new production activity to affect Vivid's release schedule, he added.

Mark Kernes, senior editor at Adult Video News, said he expects most production companies to shut down until it's known who had contact with the person known to have HIV.

It's unclear how the industry's bottom line might be affected by halted production because many companies such as Vivid could sustain sales with backlogs of unreleased titles, Kernes said.

Like other entertainment industries, adult film makers have been hurt by the recession and the Internet, where pirating and free downloads often cut producers out of a profits.

Last year, in a tongue-in-cheek complaint about the sour economy, Hustler magazine publisher Larry Flynt and Girls Gone Wild chief executive Joe Francis called for a $5 billion federal bailout. They said adult DVD sales and rentals decreased 22 percent.

The people on here making the nastiest comments about these porn stars are probably spending a great deal of time online sneaking their peaks at this stuff. Their wives and husbands and kids probably have no clue as to what their spouse or parents are doing. Because of their repressed upbringing, they have to demean others to make themselves feel morally superior. I'm sure they spend a great deal of time in their particular closet, hence their anger and hatred towards those who actually live out the fantasies they soooo desire to experience but are soooo disgusted by.
I am a straight woman, married, quite happily I might add, but on the few occasions I have watched porn, I enjoyed the lesbian scenes much more than the straight sex scenes. But that is FANTASY. I don't desire it enough to run out and try to find a woman to have sex with. If folks can't separate FANTASY from REALITY, they shouldn't be watching ANY movies or tv, let alone, PORN. When you get old like my hubby and I, every little thing helps, you know? I don't know why some people have such a problem with these very beautiful people screwing each other, but no problem at all letting their kids watch some war movie showing a soldiers brain being shot out of his head or a whole body on fire, or whatever...
Make love not war, man....

I have a deeper insight into this issue than I should have, so I’m posting this comment. The way the porn industry is set up right now works just fine. It is actually set up to identify actors who have contracted HIV which is does. See if you can follow this logic stream. An actor engages in risky behavior, in his private life, i.e. sharing needles, having unprotected sex with people who aren’t in the industry but are infected with HIV or some other STD. That actor goes to get tested for work and tests positive. The media reports that a porn actor is diagnosed with HIV. The public reaction is that he got it from the porn industry. When in reality the actor contracted HIV from outside the industry, and the porn industry actually prevented it from spreading any further. Which believe it or not, is the reality of what happens in all of these cases STD’s included. These diseases are contracted from people in “the real world” and then brought into the industry. The bottom line is you can scream for “condoms” in the industry all you want, but if people are engaging in risky behavior and hooking up with dirty people in their private lives then condoms are kind of a moot point.
12:10 PM on 10/15/2010
They are not a moot point. I am by no means an avid porn consumer but I admit I have watched a few videos on a whim with my husband on Dish Network. Rarely do I see condoms being used. People can be risky in their personal life but if they protected others while on the job-this would be a non issue. If I am sick with the flu I wear a mask when I am at work with immuno-compromised patients. Why should porn actors be any different?

Porn does influence people's sexual attitudes and behaviors. To sell Porn featuring unprotected anal sex to people all over the world (including Africa and India) is a way to subjugate women and ensure that cases of sexually transmitted diseases will continue to rise.
Porn made in America validates risky sexual acts for a lot of viewers. Suddenly unprotected anal sex becomes "normal."
I don't buy this whole "condoms don't sell porn" because the gay porn industry has been using condoms for years. To the Gay community, sex without condoms is like watching death on screen.
I watch porn, and when I see a scene where the actors are having unprotected sex, in the back of my mind, I'm concerned that these people are being exposed to HIV and/or Hepatitis C. I would rather see condoms in porn.

Condoms in porn are empowering.

If a condom is being used, I can see the woman as freely enjoying herself, rather than as a victim at risk.

Why in the world is there a need to make MORE porn movies? There are millions now. WTF?
04:36 PM on 10/14/2010
You must not be aware of the billions made from it. Why make 'new movies', new music?\

..oh that's right, trending, things change..they actually don't stay the same.

Hmmmmmm, seems like someone in this thread is really passionate about the porno industry and just wants to flag everyone. OK...go for it. I'm sure there's more, but can you explain these three porn stars that died from transmitted diseases:

Marilyn Chambers
Ivory Snow
Craven Cox

Hey, if porn is your thing...that's your business. I don't care. Your choice of lifestyle or entertainment doesn't stop me from paying the bills or putting food on my table, but you can't justifiably argue that an industry such as porn is safe from transmitted diseases. You have no validity in that argument. That's analogous in saying a firefighter isn't likely to get burned or smoke inhalation from a fire if and when he/she enters the house.
04:45 PM on 10/14/2010
Wow, let's see if that same brain can list all the people who 'WERE NOT' in the porn biz..who died of HIV/STDs.

Calculator anyone..?

For all the banging they do vs the average non-porn employed person, I'd say those are amazing statistics!

"but you can't justifiably argue that an industry such as porn is safe from transmitted diseases. You have no validity in that argument. "

By the statistics you've just posted, versus the number of people in the USA and every country on the planet who've contracted STDs, the Porn industry is beating the non-porners hands down - no pun intended.

Your thinking is skirting the true reality of sexually (the bad aka STDs) in Society...porn biz withstanding.

This is amazing..just looking at all of you bicker among yourselves and trash these people and their industry (when damn near all of you are connoisseurs in some form or another) over a health issue.
Have none of you stopped to ask yourselves...'why hasn't the gov't taken a much more aggressive approach to attacking these health concerns versus scaring people with "you shouldn't do it, beware, use condoms (which don't work anyway), etc "

Are you telling me, this is the best our Gov't do? And this is 'acceptable' to you? This is a health crisis..and just because people 'just deal with it'... just isn't good enough. A whole new attitude is needed here, and it needs to be one where heat is put on the Gov't/CDC to eliminate this. It was 'Hitler and crew' who rightly concluded that 'if you can control them sexually, you control them completely".. people, you're scared (by STDs) into how you conduct yourselves when interacting with other humans. The words "Al Qaida" scares you in the same way the words 'STDs' scare you - neither should be frightening you and controlling your behavior! Buck the 'F' up ... and demand some resolution and stop attacking these people (and yourselves)! Demand some advancement, some progress.. in solving these 'health issues'!

People are gonna 'F', have sex, boink, whatever...it should never have become the threat it is and accepted 'socially' as such.

condoms work, if used correctly.
03:43 AM on 10/15/2010
Unless they cover all areas that make genital (region) contact of both parties...aka, scrotums, vulvas, etc (which they don't)...then, there is no such thing as 'correctly.'

If you haven't noticed, there's a lot of fluid contact going on in that very region during 'the hammering'..microscopic spores of all kinds are flying all over the place..no condom can catch or stop that - think about it.

It is a price you pay----for the life you choose. Socially Transmitted Diseases know no boundaries---and once you are tagged------well some of these diseases can remain dorminant for years-----so if you continue to play with fire---and even wear a fire suit----you eventually will get "burned,"----law of probability.
02:00 PM on 10/14/2010
"dorminant" is not a word!
01:24 PM on 10/14/2010
It's odd to me that people that view porn and say it doesn't lead to molestation and rape in some people is amazing to me! You might say "well, I view porn and I don't have a desire to rape", however, you are missing the point that "you" bear responsibility for people that have a desire to molest or rape based on viewing the porn that you are viewing.

for example. You go and watch porn on a website that is linked to violent sexual acts. You aren't aware of it, so you continue to watch it. The more traffic this website gets, the more they feel that there are viewers that might be interested in viewing rape, molestations, and other violent sexual acts.

All who watch porn are indirectly fueling these sexual predators. Just like the same people that buy Weed, you are indirectly involved in a crime being done when a person is under the influence of drugs. You are keeping it in business. Period.

the more you view it, the more your brain will want to act out what you're seeing.

The porn industry is a legitimate industry, they traffic in porn made by consenting adults. Most porn isn't even violent or any worse than what you might do in your own house.

Porn stars actually have a much lower instance of STDs than the general population because the industry requires that they be tested before every shoot. So anyone who can do a bit of research into regulations around the porn industry would know that.

That would be interesting. Bollywood 'sex scenes' typically involve colorful outfits, a huge cast and lots of song and dance....but anything as crazy as on screen kissing results in criminal prosecution.

I'd like to see implied pornography though.

Therte have been a few that have been 'quaratined' over the years, but you don't hear about it.
This hopefully is a false positive.
Even with a false positive they treat it like a true positive and look back to the last test, then get a list of all performers who worked with that performer since that date, then a list of all performers/spouses/sexual encounters everyone has had that comes into contact, and everyone gets immediately re-tested. It's a daunting task, but one the industry has had to do before, it actually brings them closer together.
