According to the Wall Street Journal, Yahoo offerred this statement on the outage:
For a brief period this afternoon, Yahoo.com was inaccessible to some users. We have identified the issue and are working to correct it immediately. We know that this may have caused some inconvenience and we apologize to our users who might have been affected.
Having trouble accessing Yahoo.com? It's not just you.
Attempting to load yahoo.com returned several error messages, including one indicating that there was a "Server Hangup" and another reading "Connection refused."
There are reports that Yahoo Mail is still working, despite issues accessing Yahoo.com.
As of 5:35PM ET, Yahoo had not posted an update from its official Twitter account regarding the outage.
Referencing rumors that AOL is contemplating a takeover of Yahoo, Anil Dash joked in a tweet, "Maybe they took down Yahoo.com to put an AOL logo on it? Oh wait, this must be what Prince's press conference is about! Internet's over!"
The Next Web's BradTNW wrote on Twitter, "I don't remember Yahoo.com ever going down. Does anyone else? Maybe a service once in a while, but not the .com itself."
