GOP-Linked 'Latinos For Reform' Airs Nevada Ads Urging Hispanics Not To Vote (VIDEO)

Latinos For Reform Nevada Ad

UPDATE: Univision will not broadcast ads -- ThinkProgress reports that Spanish-language network Univision has reversed its decision to air ads by Latinos for Reform that urge Hispanic voters in Nevada not to vote.

---

A third-party group headed by a GOP operative is out with a new Nevada ad spot encouraging Latinos in the state not to cast votes in this year's midterm elections.

Robert de Posada, president of Latinos for Reform and a prominent conservative operative and political analyst for Univision, has commissioned the ads in what he describes as a response to Hispanic resentment over the failure of Washington to address immigration reform despite repeated promises.

Politico's Ben Smith talked to de Posada, who told him:

"We're saying what a lot of people are feeling. It's the only way for Hispanics to stand up and demand some attention," [de Posada] said, adding that he also couldn't ask voters to support Sharon Angle.

"I can't ask people to support a Republican candidate who has taken a completely irresponsible and bordering on racist position on immigration," he said.

The ad has quickly made waves in Nevada, prompting leaders in the Latino community to denounce the campaign's message and to encourage stations to take it off the air. (UPDATE: Univision will not air the ad.)

"That message has to be denounced, its got to be thrown out," President of the Hispanics in Politics organization, Fernando Romero told KTNV.

"To ask a community, any community to silence their voice as a way to resolve or react during a time when their voice is most needed, is what makes all this reprehensible," Luis Valera of UNLV's Government Relations said, according to KTNV's report.

Nevada Democrats convened on Monday to discuss the ad and have since called on Sharron Angle and Nevada GOP Gubernatorial candidate Brian Sandoval to impugn the message.

Latinos For Reform also shook up the 2008 elections, when they cropped up in Pennsylvania, Colorado and New Mexico with an ad campaign that sought to drive racial divisions using a supposed allegiance of then candidate-Obama to African-Americans over Latinos.

The text of that ad, from NPR:

Barack Obama a friend of the Latino community? The record demonstrates the opposite. Did you know that after the 2000 census that showed a tremendous growth of Latinos in Chicago, Obama told reporters in Chicago that while everyone agrees that the Hispanic population has grown, they cannot expand by taking power from the African-American community. You heard right...but there's more. Did you know that Obama has never hired a Latino to a senior position in his office throughout his legislative career? Did you know that Obama has opposed trade with Mexico, Central America and Colombia, yet supports free trade with Africa?

This effort to squelch the Latino vote may be particularly disturbing to Nevada Democrats considering a recent report showing that Latinos were more likely to vote Democratic in this year's elections, but were already lacking the motivation to show up to the polls.

Watch the Spanish version, airing in Nevada:

Watch the English version, not for air:

UPDATE:

Sharron Angle has come out against the ad after Reid inaccurately blamed her for its creation.

From ABC News:

"No ad should ever discourage voters from voting or expressing their opinions at the ballot box," Angle's spokesman Jarrod Agen said in a statement to ABC News.

Angle said in a radio interview today that not encouraging voters to come out would be "exactly the wrong thing to do in this election."

I thought you didn't want to be called "Latinos" why don't you make up your minds !! Any way we are fighting a war on two fronts, the economy is in the toilet, unemployment is at record levels and you have the balls to be squawking about immigration reform ? First of all ,no one invited you here if you don't like this country do us a BIG favor and go back where you came from or stop crying and wait your turn !!! Now if you had any brains you could be using this valuable time to learn some English and try and fit in with the rest of us for a change.

I can't take it. The GOP is so crooked I don't think I'll ever vote for someone with an "R" next to their name ever again....mr. de posada doesn't have to ask latinos to vote for angle b/c he knows if they stay home she might win by default.

The Latino vote is critical. If they vote the repubs will lose - especially in NV & AZ. Repub operatives are out in full force trying to demoralize Democrats and depress our voter turn out.

I posted this comment on another topic on Huffpost, but it bears repeating here. All I've heard from Republicans is the word "unconstitutional " and now advising a specific group of AMERICANS not to vote is the unconstitutional thing I ever head of . Voting is our most valuable constitutional right. This is the most disgusting political trick I have ever seen. There was a Keanu movie called "A Walk in the Clouds" where the father who had strong Spanish values told Keanu - "just because I speak with an accent does not mean I think with an accent". As a minority, that was the most powerful words I have ever heard. Never allow anyone to discourage you in voting for your values. If you don't speak, I can't hear you.

Wow, GOBP, real smooth. This tops election 2008, sending out fliers with the wrong election day dates, and telling Democratic voters in poor neighborhoods their cars would be towed or they'd be arrested, if they went to vote with outstanding tickets.

Safeguarding the Constitution by voter intimidation and general fraud, eh, baggers?

I've never believed that the Republicans cared one bit about Democracy or the constitution. Just power. The bush years and their behaviour at every election is a testament to that.

This is more proof positive, that the current GOP/Tea Party have no clue about true patriotism, no respect for the voting process--only how to block it or suppress it.
Election 2000/2004 are great examples of wide spread election fraud.
The Country ended up with an inept dunce, who allowed corporate deregulation that deeply devastated our Nation.
Let's not allow the GOP/Rove to get away with their illegal, disrespectful acts of voter fraud again, and again.
If the Democrats were in the deep trouble the media deceptively tries to convince us of, the Republican riff-Raff would not be out in droves, using foreign money, attempting to buy elections, attempting false statements to Hispanics, trying to intimidate minority voters from showing up at the polls, and who knows what else.
The "value" party seems to advertise what they lack.
Let's not let the ones attempting to cheat-- win.
No one wants to really get a taste of Angle's, "Lemonade".
A lemon is a lemon, and the conservative candidates couldn't be better examples.
VOTE!

Latinos if you can vote you better get out and vote for the dems. Belive me for some of you it may be the last. The dems support you and the repugs want to take your vote away. They want to take the citizenship away from people born here who parents weren't citizens at the time of birth. Get out the vote in your community, in your family, and friends. Believe it could be your last.

This is a very idiotic campaign, if someone can vote that means that person is already a USA citizen. Only the ignorant GOP/Tea Party thinks that a immigration reform affects the voting Hispanic population, if anything thing, what the Hispanic voter should consider is how the GOP/Tea Party wants to make them third class citizens, the bigotry racial profiling of GOP/Tea Partiers and the racial insensitiveness of (ASIAN!!!) Sharron Angle.

Any group who tells you not to VOTE, are UNAMERICAN.

Angle, Buck, McCain, Fiorina, Whitman, Perry, Brewer, Pearce, Rubio...denounce this foul ad, or don't ask ANYONE for their votes.

None of these people got mine, anyway...
Where is the non-existent FCC, in banning false and voter-suppressive ads--allowing them to air?
The Republicans must own the FCC, too.
Don't like bullies--and the current crop of Republican politicians are nothing but, rich/corporate compromised bullies...

Moreover, voter suppression is used as a tool, on a national level, right now, with complicity by spineless Democrats: Ever heard of Washington D.C.? No Congressional representation. If D.C. citizens had their full representation, as guaranteed in the constitution, the Democrats would have it just a bit easier, every election.

Then there's the dramatically low level of participation in low-income communities, which isn't even covered in the news to any significant extent. Reagan's "landslides" experienced record low turnout, to date. Again, with full participation, Republicans wouldn't have a chance at a majority and would need to reconfigure their party, perhaps separating religious social activists from fiscal conservatives.

No doubt, the Nevada Senate race is getting ugly! The Latinos for Reform ads are wrong and just plain STUPID on so many levels. Did these folks think that we wouldn't find them out?

A Fake Latino Reform Group Appears in Nevada
http://soquelbythecreek.blogspot.com/2010/10/fake-latino-reform-group-appears-in.html

It is indeed curious that only this story makes the news cycle. What about the The Patriotic Majority with a Tea Party-sounding name running ads in Nevada? According to FEC records, The Patriotic Majority is funded with $400,000 from SEIU, $300,000 from the American Federation of Teachers, $300,000 from an individual donor that also contributed the maximum allowable to Harry Reid, and other similar donors. Why scant mention of this deceptive group?

These attacks on hispanics and attempts at voter suppression aren't surprising coming from the Republican party. It is an absolute disgrace that a hispanic headed this effort.

No they want to stop illegal border crossing, drug and gun running from getting across the border. They want to make it safe for everyone that is legally here in the United States. If your not legally here then you don't belong here. If you come here legally then let me be the first to welcome you to America.
