Mark Twain Beats Jon Stewart, John Grisham: He's On Bestseller List Again

NEW YORK — It's never too late: Mark Twain is back on the best-seller lists.

Pre-orders for the first of three planned volumes of his autobiography, released in full upon the centennial of Twain's death, have for the past few days placed the book in the top five of Barnes & Noble.com and Amazon.com. It is outpacing new works by Ken Follett, John Grisham and Jon Stewart.

"The Autobiography of Mark Twain, Volume 1" comes out Nov. 15 from the University of California Press, which already has increased the first printing from 50,000 copies to 75,000, the publisher said Tuesday. The book is a highly unusual hit, not only because it was written so long ago, but because the actual text is an assembly of remembrances, commentaries, newspaper clippings and journal entries. Twain had worked on his memoir for years and never finished it.

Excerpts have appeared over the past several decades, but Twain's strong opinions on current affairs and other matters were left out, at his request. He had said that it was best to wait 100 year after his death for the whole book to be released.

I am a little confused why the article states: ""The Autobiography of Mark Twain, Volume 1" comes out Nov. 15 from the University of California Press, which already has increased." when I just ordered it off of Amazon and will receive it on Friday.

It's not the kindle version... the actual book. Did they release the book early?

I cant wait to read this from a man who had so many opinions and sayings. His writings still show us he is alive in Tom Sawyer and Huck Finn. Sawyer should be required reading in all schools

Wow. I so want this book. Because - outside of a book, a dog's a man's best friend. Inside of a dog, it's too dark to read.

I'll try and get the author to autograph my copy - I'm a big fan.

Twain is the greatest wordsmith of the American English language ever. He doesn't translate well into Spanish, but then again Neruda doesn't translate well into English. I hope he remains required reading in schools for generations to come. Such skilled use of the written word is disappearing from our cultures.

I can't wait to get this one into my Kindle.

I've got to read this book. 100 year wait! What a fantastic gift to the future. I'm not surprised at all that's it's topping the bestsellers lists. First heard about this some time ago, and I knew it was going to be big. We've really never had an event like this in American Literature! Of course it's huge!

We need to clone Twain about twelve thousand times, and send them all to Congress.
Just imagine where we'd be with a Congress full of jaded realists.

The first line of your comment reminded me of the opening of this piece by Mencken, the best brief appreciation of Twain I know of.
