Waste of $$ in this economy..
12:47 AM on 11/08/2010
I actually think this is a good use of money. Institutions of higher learning provide a large amount of jobs and what better way to help the economy than through helping to fund those jobs and educating our youth to be smart citizens? Many of the people graduating from these schools will end up at the top of their fields, whether that be education, politics, research, etc.... these schools aren't a waste of money, but an investment in the future. This money helps create a community of learners, and this community helps to nurture the community around them. Eventually, the graduates will be prepared to make a difference in our national and global community.

There is not a single Ivy League school on that list. Thanks for making me laugh though, it's been a dreary day.

hahahahaha oh god. thank god most of these schools (and the ivy leagues NOT included) have need-blind admissions policies. you know, for the stinky poor like me.

and all the children are above average

And people believe it, which is why they package it and sell it.

Wow. When I went to my instate public university for undergrad (university of Illinois - Urbana) , my first year tuition (both semesters) was about $1800. By my senior year it was about $3000.

35k+ now?

if only there were mutual funds that returned the same rate that education and health care costs rise annually.

The college i graduated from, (a different state college than the one I mentioned above)--now it has a state of the art fitness center with rock climibing wall, 3 pools, sand volleyball court, all kinds of fitness classes--and this is included in tuition and fees if you are a student--no extra cost.. Thats not to mention the student union with bowling alley, games area, food court, study area, music listening lounge etc. They want to be pampered these days, Id say.

.So all these perks and these spa like facilities are driving up

When I enetered MSU in the fall of 1968, and I believe throught the whole of that year,it was $13 a creditor you could take 12 credits or more for $156, if you could carry 25, you could take them for $156 for quarterly credits(2/3) of the now semester credits. The student association fee was $3 per quarter. When my daughter finished up in 2004 each semester credit was over $200 a credit hour, and there was a $300 matriculation fee that you had to pay if you took one credit hour or more, on top of the tuition.

Wow most of these colleges won't get you a job, save your money!

But I agree with Gobamaaa, the Ivies are fair compared to this. They do charge a lot but at least they come with more guarantee for a job.

and yet people always try to claim that the ivy league schools are an obscene waste of money.

There is very little difference between the educational quality of American universities. They're all average. None truly stand out from the pack. One can pay this much for average, or that much, but no matter what, you'll be getting average.

These numbers don't mean anything if how the school deals with financial aid is not factored in. A $50,000 school to which anyone who legitimately cannot afford to pay is receiving $30,000 in grants and debt forgiveness is more affordable than a $30,000 school that deals only in loans. Maybe the list wouldn't change, but I would be curious to know because I know that a lot of the schools on this list tout the fact that nobody is turned away for inability to pay.

When my son was born in 1994 I went on one of those online college tuition estimating sites and laughed when it predicted that tuition costs for a four year degree when my son went to college would be about $208,000. I'm not laughing any more.

My husband went to Union on financial aid and athletic scholarships - probably the only student who pulled up to the dorm in a pick up truck his freshman year.

So the other article I read was just tuition, room and board and this one enumerates just tuition. Gotcha. The two articles could have been merged into one, but I understand two is better than one. I would like an article that enumerates public schools accross the nation with data on funding, performance, and some deduced variables of what administrative quality and quality of resources might be.

Who can tell me how many of these colleges are under the management of ecclesiastical organizations or religious institution? In fact, is there a database that tracks universities and colleges? I need to know who is; private, public, state, federal or religious. Thanks

Wesleyan is non-denominational, although historically Methodist. I attended. It's a terrific school, and many students are on financial aide and/or scholarships. Wish I could afford to send my kids there, and I would in a heartbeat.

If you had gone to a public university, chances are by now you would have saved up enough money to send them there.

Oldest son at Oberlin for jazz studies, drums, piano, composition. Dean's scholarship, some financial aid makes it comparable to other schools that can't compare to the faculty in the conservatory. Jazz legends Billy Hart, Robin Eubanks, Dan Wall and others. I for one think it's worth every penny.
