Starbucks Offers Wine & Beer After 4pm At Seattle Location (PHOTOS)

Associated Press/Huffington Post   First Posted: 10/19/10 01:05 PM ET   Updated: 05/25/11 07:05 PM ET

Associated Press: SEATTLE — Something new is on the menu at a renovated Starbucks in Seattle: beer and wine.

The store that reopened Monday is the first under the Starbucks brand to offer alcohol.

Craft beer and local wines go on sale after 4 p.m. The idea is to offer drinks and a wider variety of savory food that will attract customers after the morning espresso rush.

The store closed in July for the renovation, which also includes a circular coffee bar that brings customers closer to the baristas.

The Olive Way store is one of Starbucks Corp.'s percolators for ideas that could someday spread to the Seattle-based chain's other locations. Company officials have declined to say how soon elements from the shop might appear elsewhere.

WATCH: CBS' Early Show takes a look at the Olive Way Starbucks location and its pilot wine and beer program:

From the CBS broadcast, some images of the inaugural Starbucks wine list and the new bar-like digs at the Seattle alcohol-serving test location:

This business model has been around the local Austin coffee shops for awhile and they're always packed. I prefer local to Starbucks, but I could definitely see it working for them.

I'll join the Starbucks crew when it's private, Private clubs always welcome a better class of people!

At first I read your post, saw your avatar and screen name and thought you were making a joke; then I read your profile and know you're really a Republican.

And you people call us elitist?

And like their coffee, what you get in their stores will be bitter and ineffective, but their pre-packaged will be just fine.

I can't stand Starbucks, mainly due to this:
Predatory franchise corporations such as Starbucks, move into a market built by local people, force a split in the revenue locallly and hasten the eventual collapse of the local business that cannot afford to share the market with the interloper's deep pockets.

I know that they don't always succeed at driving out the local places--yay!--but it is still pretty sleazy that they try to do so.
And now are they going to try to poach on the wine bars? No thanks...

Yeah, well, the only places that sell wine or beer near my office are dark and nasty. If I could hit Starbucks up for a glass of wine in the afternoon with a coworker or client, I would love it.

Bummer. I'll root for a nice wine bar or microbrewery to open up near you.

Austin is an incredible model for where it has not been able to take over. I couldn't tell you where a Starbucks is in the city honestly. Houston and Dallas are definitely a different story. In Houston, outside of Montrose and the museum district, I couldn't tell you where a local coffee shop is.

Their coffee is overheated and underextracted. It takes some skill to make a cup of coffee that is both weak and bitter.
