Wasting Money

Wallet Pop:

It's been a rough few years. Unemployment woes, foreclosure fears and economic uncertainty rule the headlines. It's a time where being frugal has become chic and "tightening our belts" de rigueur.

I just spent hundreds on a backyard birthday with a homemade cake, homemade pin-the-tail game and a cheap pinata.....perhaps we invited too many people (big family and lots of kids on block) but it was worth it.

Don't do any of these things...got rid of my car bike walk and public transportation, filter my own water, make my own coffee and bring it with me...these are pretty basic things here ...if you really don't want to be wasteful change your life in a truly dramatic way and start by turning off the tv and getting your family to plant a garden.

Amazing that anyone needs advice on these points listed in the article (except in regards to the oil change). Totally pathetic, imo.

I must take exception with the "water" and "name brand" food products as often times the ingredients are very different. In many cases, the no name brand is loaded with HFCS and more chemically produced preservatives. As to the water, the key word missing is "purified" because many filters do not address the chlorine in city water.

We drink spring water and filter our well

I drink and smoke

I will quit when I die or quit working which either comes first. Unless there is social security and it will be when I die

I’ve consistently found that as a single person, brown bagging is simply not cost effective. I simply can’t eat the ingredients for lunches fast enough to make buying them worthwhile. Half of everything rots before I can get to it.

How about frozen "dinners." I take mine to work, it sits on my desk until lunch, nuke it and nothing went to waste, and a lot more variety. And cheap too, on sale they range from $2 to $3.

Are there no museums in your area open one evening a week? Or a park where you can have a no plastic bring real plates picnic?

On no. 7-more often than not the Brand Name product is produced on the same factory line as the generic/house/offbrand. The largest frozen lemonade factory for brand/house names is in Ventura, chances are any brand you buy of frozen lemonade was from there-brand or house.

I agree with most if not all of the nine, to some degree. I would also add a half dozen more:

10. Land line phone
11. Newspapers
12. Our military excursions into Iraq and Afghanistan
13. Any product with the Apple logo on it
14. Halloween
15. Cable TV

Halloween and to a huge extent Christmas has become big wastes of money. I remember when I was a kid (and I'm not even 40) we made our own costumes for Halloween. Now we just buy one from China. I'm sure they are grateful.

The best Christmas gift I ever got I got was from my great aunt. She was dirt poor, didn't even have running water. She gave me and my sister a little tin full of pennies for Christmas once. Yes we shared it. It was probably less than 2 dollars, but we were so excited.

Everything now is about mass consumption. It's truly sad.

Well ... to be fair ... if they're substantial and your guy gets elected you could do real well.

lol, i noticed that too. my daughter loves pellegrino. we drink it on occasion instead of soda (which we don't drink it in our house). they could have used some other trendy water instead, like Voss or Perrier.

Talk about screwed up priorities. Our government forks over $800 billion and counting to the banks to supposedly help free up credit for small businesses and help the economy. What do the banks do? Pocket the money, declare the most profitable quarters and give themselves record bonuses. And they're talking about how we should tighten our budgets a bit more?!
05:47 PM on 10/19/2010
Yes. Because banks pocketed money, declared profitable quarters and gave themselves record bonuses.

Yes, both Presidents should have told all of the banks to fail and deal with the consequences, that would have made much more sense.
