Willow Smith: 'When I Turned 9, My Style Changed' (VIDEO)

Willow Smith

When Willow Smith, the daughter of Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith, dropped her video "Whip My Hair" (below) earlier this week, it created a viral sensation. Partly because it's catchy as hell, but also because this 9-year-old doesn't dress like everyone else. Ever since she started sporting a mohawk, it was clear that this little girl had style. And so this week she talked to Teen Vogue about it. Scroll down for video.

On sitting front row at Dolce & Gabbana at Paris fashion week:

I was writing a song on my phone, and my mom walked in and said: Willow. And I was like: Mom give me a minute, because I was focused on writing. And I looked up and there was Dolce, and I was like: Oh my God.

On her style:

I used to like dresses and tights but when I turned nine, my style changed. My mom helps me pick out my clothes, but my brother [Jaden] always says: Willow, sag your pants!

This is rediculus!! She is 9 for crying out loud! If it were my daughter, she wouldn't be seen in public with hair like that.

Willow..life is full of haters..Stay focused and positive..U look absolutely marvelous...Before you changed your look, I didn't think it fit. But, after the transformation, I was pleasantly surprised. Your mom and dad are steering you in the right direction..

This is the stupidest thing I've heard. She's only 9. She doesn't have a "message to send". The song was not catchy. It was stupid, filled with special effects and backup singers. She's being treated like royalty, with makeup, face sequins, and dressed as though she's a God. Give me a break! She's 9. She shouldn't have a "style", much less a "new style". And Dolce shouldn't be visiting her. She should act and talk like a kid. Reading these interviews and quotes and seeing these music videos make me sick and sad for all the kids who are going to want to mimic her. It's easy to see that these kids think they are above everyone else. GREAT! That's all we need. The Hollywood celebrity pre madonas getting younger and younger. Why did they wait until she was 9? They should have had her do music videos when she was 2!!! UGH!

This song was written by a white gentlement who adopted an African American girl. His daughter was always complaning about her hair. He thought her complaints had to do with them being white, but he realized that it had nothing to do with them just the fact that she hated her hair. So, he wrote this song to say that blacks could wear their hair in so many different styles. I don't know why Willa Smith was chosen to do the video.

as catchy as her song "Whip My Hair" is - are we really supposed to think that she consciously changed her entire style at age 9... I'm sure mom and many stylist had quite the many "suggestions"

I feel so gulty for finding this kid extremely irritating. She's not a negative influence or doing anything off the chain so why does she irk me so?

This is karma & yes she is...

I tried to watch & listen to her video. I couldn't make it through to the end. It was repetitive and the song wasn't 'catchy as hell', IMO. I thought it was awful.

Anyway, now we will have a 9 year old as the new sage of our times. How have we managed before this? Yes, she has lived all of 9 (!) years, is an 'old soul' and is wise beyond her years. I'm waiting for some quotes about how she's been writing music since she was in diapers and she's been designing clothes since she was 3. A real trend setter, that one!

Why next year her autobiography will hit the bookstores and be a best seller! She'll have her own clothing line and perfume named, aptly, "Willow". With her parents $$ and their connections she can do anything and everything. And probably will.

Gee, I can hardly wait.

Exactly what I was thinking. I thought the song was stupid.

Don't bother...

No talent. The arts are being perpetually watered down by shows like America's got talent, YouTube and the children of stars that believe talent is genetic and can transfer from one form of art such as acting to another like music. This is an epidemic. Whatever happened to having to standing out above the rest? Now we have snot-nosed self entitled children synthesizing their voices and riding on a last name. Detestable!

Child please.
07:34 PM on 10/22/2010
This kid will be kell on wheels. I hope they are able to slow her down. the desire for fame at that age is not healthy. Her brother has been in two sucessful movies and I am sure the bug has hit her, but this doesn't look good. It is obvious that the parents are having trouble setting bounderies; ie, letter her shave the side of her head and not telling her "Hell no." I hope she survives her teen-age years.
09:34 PM on 12/03/2010
So u are the authority on what is or is not healthy? For all we know u could be doing something of a none healthy nature. Who are u?? Her parents know how to capture the market! We all know who Willow Smith is now... Don't we?? I think they know exactly what they are doing..

When does she go to school??? She is NINE years old.
10:17 AM on 10/26/2010
Didn't you hear? These kids are ABOVE SCHOOL. From the first second, they are born and bred to think they are above everyone else and beat to their own drum. That's why she's commenting on her "change of style" at age 9. Give me a break!!

I'm sure she's homeschooled with a tutor (as nearly all Hollywood children are), which in itself is interesting because the homeschooling community gets a bad rap because society says it takes the kids away from other kids and doesn't let them experience real life. These parents intentionally took their kids out of real life and had them homeschooled in order to not be penalized by the state. HOW SAD!!! Double whammy! And we wonder why they are all messed up!

This girl has an amazing life. She is loved by her parents and can have anything she wants. She has all the designer clothes she wants, 3 stylists (for a 9 year old!), a state of the art music video, front row at fashion shows, and whatever else her little heart desires. But by the time she turns 18 she will have done it all and had it all, then what?

See > Lindsay Lohan
10:11 PM on 10/23/2010
Remember, Lindsay has screwed-up dysfunctional parents. That also makes all the difference in the world. People seem to be a bit harder on the Smiths, when every celebrity parent out their does the same with their kids. From Madonna, and her daughter's "clothing line", Demi and Bruce's kids in the spotlight and everyone else's. The Smiths are hardly the first.

Lindsey's parents aren't anywhere in the same catagory as the others mentioned. Lindseys parents weren't famous first. Their daughter was their meal ticket and they seem to be actively pushing the other kids into a life of taking care of mom and dad. As much as I wouldn't want my kids seemingly being encouraged to forgo a life outside of HW, I can say that if one must have stage parents, I'd rather they be the Smiths, or Madonna over the Lohans anyday.

Can somebody be precocious, pretentious, and a bore all at the tender age of 9? When she hits puberty, she'll have nothing to do.

dbl148-you have your threads crossed dear. You replied to me that I'm jealous of the First Lady and I ahven't even made a comment about her. I happen to love Michelle Obama and have NEVER said a negative thing about her. I was commenting on the Smith's partenting which I also praised except for letting their children grow up too fast. You need to pay more attention to what you are commenting on.
02:10 PM on 10/21/2010
I think she/he was being sarcastic in the response. You asked who? db148 responded "The First Lady".... I think.

I read it again....you are probably right....excuse me.
