HP Slate 500 Features, Price Officially Unveiled (PHOTOS)

The Huffington Post     First Posted: 10/22/10 08:54 AM ET   Updated: 05/25/11 07:05 PM ET

A Windows 7 tablet has arrived.

The HP Slate 500, designed "specifically for business, enterprise and vertical customers," according to the press release, boasts an 8.9-inch multi-touch screen, 3MP camera, 2GB of RAM, and a webcam. For $799, you'll get the 1.5-pound HP Slate 500, along with an HP Slate Digital Pen, HP Slate Dock, and HP Slate Portfolio.

Engadget writes of the device: We only got to spend a short time with the tablet, but the 1024 x600-resolution capacitive screen provided a decently responsive experience within Windows, and the Wacom stylus, which there oddly isn't a slot for on the tablet itself, was great for doodling in Paint and writing in WordPad. While the active digitizer does add a bit to the overall price, we think it's worth it especially for text input as the soft keyboard can be a bit cramped on the smaller screen.

CrunchGear's take: This thing runs Windows 7. It runs it just well enough to make it a compelling device for point-of service and other niche markets. It doesn't run it well enough to, say, convince me to get rid of my laptop.

The Register: Not that the desktop OS is anything to be ashamed of, and the HP Slate 500 (as HP has monikered the thing) seems to run the OS at a decent clip despite weighing only 680 grams.
CNET: We got a chance to sit down with the HP Slate 500 recently, and found it to be a lightweight, sturdy device, with a slick industrial design and several hardware advantages over the iPad, especially when it comes to ports and connections.

The sad thing that people rave about the Ipad like its the best thing since instant grits. The truth is I've had an ipad since 2007..... Its called and ipod touch.

Um yeah… it's about 1/10th the responsiveness of an iPad, combined with a lame camera and a slot for a card that's used in 1 out of 15 digital cameras. woo hoo. boy am i excited. i think i'll just get an ipad that's specifically made for this form factor, has 10x better 3d acceleration, and an os that's completely designed from the ground up for multitouch, not added-onto with lame extensions like win7.

You would have to be crazy to shell out $800 for a device with specs as poor as this! There is nothing new and innovative with this product.

I guess there's no room in the market for innovation or market pressure to improve already-existing products. I've been wasthing tablets for quite some time. Maybe Apple should send a "thank you" card to the originators. He, certainly, was no the first. If he cowtowed to those who thought those early tablet were too elegant to improve upon, where would all the Apple fans be now?

The rocketing increase in the development of "thinner" chips, and the rapid adoption of the Android OS will soon relegate Apple to 10% market share, again.

Reality check. If you are talking O/S then 10% market share would actually be an improvement.

Technology is growing leaps and bounds every day. One week iPad. The next who knows. I'm waiting until they come out with the computer that has it all. Maybe next week :).

That's a matter of opinion. The secret service are using products that you can't even imagine and is not available to the public yet.

Anything labeled a challenger is a copycat first. It lacks originality. Second, it causes dissent among its supporters and supporters of the opposite gadget. Adults are reduced to warring in favor of their choice, and we make a choice usually based on limited funds to get one or the other. I am all for everyone having alternatives to Apple's devices, but labeling them as challengers or iDevice killers when in reality they are copying the technology of Apple and coming out late is pathetic. It's like Southern rappers coming out 20 years after rap has been established thanks to the NY, and claiming NY is irrlevant though were it not for NY, they'd simply be failing in school rather than rapping their way into gold teeth. Same theory.

Funny thing is tablets are not new and came to market years before the ipad ;)

could be a nice business addition, as time goes on the computer will go through many redesigns and off shoots, I remember my first apple II in 1984, I thought it was the bomb, only to see the IBM PC come out and....well you know the rest....still gonna need some serious upgrades to get me to park my laptop though.

Would someone tell HP to get rid of these stoopid slide shows!
03:56 PM on 10/25/2010
I was going to make this comment but thought I would scroll down to see if others noticed. You did! This was one of the worst slide shows ever (even for HP!). Not a SINGLE picture of a real desktop screen!
