Nancy Pelosi Responds To President Bush On Social Security: We're Very 'Pleased' He Is Disappointed

First Posted: 10/22/10 04:40 PM ET Updated: 05/25/11 07:05 PM ET

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) was extremely pleased with President Bush's latest revelation that his biggest failure in office was not passing Social Security reform, telling reporters on Friday that it was a great Democratic triumph that the party managed to block him.

"As one of the leaders who led the effort to disappoint him, I am very pleased that he is admitting he was trying to do that," she said during the call, joined by Rep. Rosa DeLauro (D-Conn.). "That it was his high priority. We defeated him then in his trying to privatize Social Security, we will do it again. Republicans are trying to do it in their budget. The three independent reports conclude that if Republicans succeeded in privatizing Social Security, benefits for America's seniors would be cut [and] Wall Street would have made billions."

The issue of Social Security has become a hot topic in the midterm elections, with conservative groups like the U.S. Chamber of Commerce and Republican candidates accusing Democrats of cutting benefits for the government-funded program through their votes for health care reform. Democrats are responding that the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act did no such thing but that under a GOP majority, Social Security would be privatized.

When asked by The Huffington Post what lessons Democrats take from the fight during the Bush administration that would be carried over into a possible battle next year, Pelosi said that Democratic unity and strong public opposition was how they ultimately won.

"First of all, we showed the value, that this is a strong pillar of our society -- the Democrats did," she said. "We stayed unified. People said, at the time, why don't Democrats have a plan? They don't have a plan! We have a plan. It's called Social Security. So we let the President go out and talk about his change to the plan. So as not to confuse the issue, we just let people compare Social Security to what the President was going to say. ... We trusted each other, stayed firm, and said it's the President versus Social Security. And Social Security won."

The call came amidst a push by Democrats to get women voters -- who traditionally are strong backers of the party -- energized and out to vote in November. President Obama has been doing a series of events designed to reach out to women voters, including a campaign appearance for Sen. Patty Murray (D-Wash.). On Thursday, the White House put out a report making the case that Democrats have been the ones looking out for the economic prospects of women.

DeLauro said that women, who, on average, live longer than men, have the most to lose if Social Security is privatized. "Two-thirds of older Americans in this nation rely on Social Security for their income," she told reporters on Friday's call. "They understand what privatizing Social Security means to them better than some others because that is what this income is. They don't want it to be squandered, if it would have been, if we had moved in that direction. They're discerning. They get it, they understand it, and they know that it's the Democrats who have been the strong supporters."

Pelosi also tied in the influx of undisclosed outside spending in the midterm elections, stating the issue goes far beyond concerns about campaign finance laws. "There is an agenda attached to why this money is coming in, and it's not good news for America's working families," she said. "There is an agenda attached to it -- to return it to pre-Obama times, when special interests had a bigger strangle-hold. ... So whatever the subject, shipping jobs overseas, stopping clean energy jobs, preserving Social Security or privatizing it, having direct loans for students than having big interest going to the banks, consumer protection, the list goes on and on. And again, the unidentified donors are trying to reverse that. All we're saying to them is stand by your ad; tell us who you are, so the American people can connect that dot more clearly."

So I guess George Bush's big disappointment was not being able to steal Social Security money away from the plebes so he could give it to his uber-wealthy Wall Street buddies.

No fear, Obama will accomplish this goal during his first and only term.

I don't that they want to privatize it completely. I think that people should have the option of backing out. I think that i could do more for my retirement if I could take that 15% I pay being self employed an invested it in other things. I would receive better returns, I could work if I want to and not get penalized, and i wouldn't have to live at the poverty level like my mom who elied on social security. It's a shame that people don't actually read what the statements are. Keep the people dependent on Social Security on it, and allow people to opt out. What's wrong with that? The dumb ones and gunvernment worshippers will stay on, and the smart ones will get away and live better retirements. What's wrong with that?

They already have something like that. It's called IRAs. Funny thing is twice during the Bush administration I saw the value of mine cut almost in half.

a) it's not guaranteed. The Supreme Court said so.
b) It's not going to be around in 20 years, so what's the point?

Anybody working & making $ 500.000.00 or more at the age of 62 not suppose to collect any social security.People making 350.000.00 should pay higher taxes instead of 250.000.00.

So if they have paid into the system all their lives, what gives you the right to deny what they put in? That sounds like theft to me.

What gives you the right to the fruit of one's labor? $350k isn't a lot of money these days. if there is going to be an income tax, it should be the same for everyone.

I've said this before but will say it again: The strategy of stealing their boots while exhorting the electorate to pull themselves up by their bootstraps is a tried and true Republican strategy. I think it's also the case that many in the Tea Party don't realize they've already lost their boots.

If 43 feels busted he must have been a bubble.
When he could he wouldn't and now he wants to and he can't
We all know the real name of his book.
"Who done it" or "What he said"
Cheney thinks we think Bush thinks we think he was the president but we know Bush thinks we think he was but we know he absolutely knuckled to the bunker man.. Its called the reversal of dominion.
I still compliment Bush for not Bombing Iran and making WW3 creating an ecological disaster that would take one thousand years to clean up.Thank God almighty for Chief Admiral Fallen, Chief Myers and Sec Gen Colin Powell. They all fell on their swords and saved us all.
Probably Obama is saying something like this.
" The good times is a comin and the bad times is a fadin away."
I think The big mistake was allowing Saddam Husein invade Kuwait when we could have blocked that invasion right on the border fourteen years ago .This created the whole just war syndrome of a kinder gentler Nation. That was the beginning of a war without end.
Bush gave a green light to invade Gaza on his way out of office this was a result of the Annapolis conference.
We have all lost the way to regain the pathway of peace.
War in Pakistan is not an option.

The Bushes are the pits and America deserves better,. Please vote Democratic.LEADERSHIP.

Much of what we see and hear about Nancy and other democrats has been filtered through the corporate press news shows like Fox cable news.

Democrats will do 100% percent better for the middle class than the republicans will. There are a few bad republican democrats that we need to primary as soon as we can.

Have there been any articles on who would make the profit on privatized SS investment? What companies would be investing these billions? I really like the process of sending my dollars to the SS fund. It has worked since 1937 even though the GOP has been fighting it since 1937. As a senior and a widow I like the security of my SS and can I tell the GOP who is trying to scare the hell out of the seniors that I would appreciate them butting out. What will keep the SS system going for another 73 years is good jobs, raising the cap on wages that are subjected to SS withholding. Raising the cap would not harm the typical middle American but would put more equity in the system for those that make more money. Sending our jobs overseas to me has always been to avoid paying SS, unemployment insurance, workers comp. and decent wages. Can't see that any company would prefer outsourcing our jobs for any other reason. Whoops I forgot they get a tax break on top of everything else.

Those Financial houses on Wallstreet already have our 401ks, our IRAs ... now they want SS too? What has happened to Diversification that they all preach?
We all thought Owning a home was a way to diversify from Wall Street ... MISTAKE. They are all entangled. And now, they also want SSecurity in this mess? A mess they don't even want to clearly disclose to people? Thanks, but no thanks.
I want my SS to stay where it is. I would like for us to privatize our Military spending. We give the Military a fix budget and if they want to generate more money, they can invest it on wall street and good luck to them.

I have to admit, I had been very skeptical about Nancy ... but, she has been FANTASTIC to say the least. She has been incredible. She has been a true advocate for the middle class. She has been a warrior for the little people, the women, the true Americans. She has delivered on almost all her promises in the house. She always managed to get the votes she promised. She simply knows how to get things done.
I know, it doesn't look like the democrats will retain the house, but I want to say Thank You Nancy for the work you have done. You stood up to the Bush man and you delivered plenty of Legislation for America. Thank you again Nancy.

For the same reasons you have stated, plus a determination rarely seen in any politician, I agree. She refuses to be bullied or marginalized , and she serves with honestly and bravery, she serves not only her state constituents, she serves me in Washington State, and in every state. She is always a genuine person.

Pelosi is as aware as Baghdad Bob -- she couldnt see a train wreck until her body was already in pieces - she still thinks she will be speaker next year

She thinks SSA is going to be sustainable? Did someone steal her abacus?

here is why

currently people are collecting 5 times what they put in

Baby boomers have just begun to retire - soon we will have a period where a much smaller population will be working than will be collecting

SSA was developed at a time when the average life was 67 years - it is way higher now

Pelosi knows this - she is a rich person that likes power and will be long gone before it fails

if she doesnt know this she should be arrested

James - I am sure you are of genius status in your world - but just because you so it does not make it a fact

You cant prove that and here is why

Lets say they put that in effect

Then companies would change compensation packages and would give people money as a bonus or other perk that SSA does not apply to,

You and many in Gov suffer from static thinking and this is proof.

Look how many companies pay people in the USA from foreign subsidiaries to avoid taxes

You have to try to stop using such simple thinking techniques so that you can actually contribute to the solution
