Rachel Maddow: Sharron Angle Ad 'The Most Overtly Racist' Of 2010 (VIDEO)

First Posted: 10/24/10 03:07 PM ET Updated: 05/25/11 07:05 PM ET

Rachel Maddow sharply criticized Senate candidate Sharron Angle on Sunday, saying that the Nevada Republican aired the "most overtly racist ad of this campaign season."

Speaking on "Meet the Press," Maddow excoriated the spot for "showing a group of white college students being menaced by some tough-looking Latinos." Earlier in October, Angle aired an ad called "Thanks, Pal," which many felt went too far. Fox 5 in Las Vegas described the commercial:

Sharron Angle's latest attack against Senate opponent Harry Reid features a group of white graduates celebrating and posing for pictures, presumably leaving high school for higher education.

That image is followed by a photo of three scowling Hispanic men, whom the ad suggests are trying to seize preferred college tuition rates from the students. A banner proclaiming the men "illegal aliens" accompanies the photo.

The ad, which ThinkProgress called "racially tinged," has since been removed from YouTube. But two other ads that unfavorably portray undocumented workers remain, including one that Angle struggled to defend while speaking with Nevadans earlier in the month.

Maddow also criticized Angle for "saying conservatives should be expected to use guns to try to get what they want if they don't get what they want from the election." Those remarks, which Angle referred to as "Second Amendment remedies," surfaced in June.

Liberals have nothing left to use against Angle. They've thrown everything they can at her, and she's still running neck and neck with Harry Reid. So, they resort to the cheapest and most desperate tactic -- race baiting. When all else fails, call your opponent a racist.

Sharon Angle is a cornucopia of wrong headed horror, the racism is just a maraschino garlic clove on the top of the durian sundae that is her campaign.

Thank you - I'm convinced now. I'm one of those spineless morons that can be easily swayed by a single opinion and believes everything that Fox News or Rush Limbaugh tells me. I appreciate you bringing this truth about the Democrats to my attention. I'll make sure to tell all my friends to check it out when I meet up with them at the Civil War reinactment.

I like Rachel and like the statement she made about Democrats telling the voter to "Google my opponent" and it's s decent request and thought. The problem is that (and this is my personal observation) Democrats are only being listened to by other Democrats and probably most Independents. The ones that need to hear this are listening to the Becks and Limbaugh's of the world. I don't ask that everyone convert but unless you hear both sides you can't make a informative decision.

We need real leadership in this country to come out strongly against all this racism, sexism and bigotry. It is tearing our country apart. We are a melting pot/bowl of fruit nation that IS capable of living together harmoniously. We have the evidence of that in NY. Why then do we tolerate intolerance??? Why vote for a man or woman who spreads hate and intolerance?

We should stop thinking like white supremacists "My kin are the only ones who count, we don't need anybody else" and think, instead, like the children of the global village we truly are members of.

We all need each other. All over this amazing planet.
Like the poet said, Come Together, Right Now.

Well said. It is this white supremacy thinking that seems to be taking over the country and it is sad and disgusting. The very fact that all most people do on these blogs is name call is evidence of the sad state of things. Complete intolerance is all I see and it makes me want to cry.

Rm is right, anyone for controlling our boarders and national sovereignty is racist. It is so obvious. It cannot be a policy disagreement it is a character flaw.

No, the majority of dems/liberals do not think that way. Border control IS a policy disagreement. It just so happens that a lot of xenophobes climb aboard this "security" wagon. Sadly, one of them is a childhood friend, who thinks we should circle the wagons and live far from anyone else.
Some people don't get out much or have much personal experience with people who are different from them. That engenders fear. Fear is not something to build policy upon, IMHO.
And, the ad in question is fearmongering. It's pretty difficult for an "illegal" to get into college, particularly state college where your citisenship/residence is checked.
To make them look like thugs is very suspect. Yes, there is a problem and there are gangs. That ad is not addressing it in any rational way. IMHO, of course.

Thoughtful well reasoned response.

What I think is going on is that this is just another issue that rational people could manage intelligently and carefully, but political people, like RM, inflame with invective, making all scurry to their positions and engage in combat.

Hopefully you all take some time out to pick up your dictionaries and read a newspaper before you pick up your signs and pens next time. Our kids are stupid enough already without learning how to spell from these Tea Party rally signs.

"saying conservatives should be expected to use guns to try to get what they want if they don't get what they want from the election." What? If that's an accurate quote, isn't it sedition?

All liberals think Rachel is great and a good source for news and current events. Non-liberals don't believe or listen to her at all. I have learned this from her daily article on HP.

Rachel is the best thing we have in Reporting today. She is armed with facts and she always has the answers. For all of those hating on her, it just goes to show your fear of the truth.

Rachel deserves more air time on NBC and MSNBC. I wonder why Morning Joe doesn't have Rachel and Keith on, they would add lots of truth and class to that charade.

Just wondered, SGlitz are you a tea partier, birther, or just plain old republican. I am a little confused, since you all sound so alike. Do you really need a college degree to understand his analogy. Everything Obama says is picked apart, while yall get to say any ignorant, foolish thing that you like. What a group!
10:00 AM on 10/27/2010
The guy is unbelievable. For a sitting President to say that, and to be quoted as saying "The empire is striking back...". I mean dont get me wrong, its hillarious stuff, but it is so unpresidential its pathetic. Still, one cannot help but stare at the train wreck, ya know?
10:29 AM on 10/27/2010
Want to talk about unpresidential? Former Pres. Bush was so famous for his hilarious sayings there are web pages dedicated to oneliners. But, his famous war cry, "My answer is bring them on." --on Iraqi insurgents attacking U.S. forces, Washington, D.C., July 3, 2003...makes me absoutely sick.

"See, in my line of work you got to keep repeating things over and over and over again for the truth to sink in, to kind of catapult the propaganda." -- Bush, Greece, N.Y., May 24, 2005
