Sen. Harry Reid Asks For Obama's Birth Certificate In 'SNL' Cold Opening (VIDEO)

First Posted: 10/24/10 01:53 PM ET Updated: 05/25/11 07:05 PM ET

Last night on "Saturday Night Live," the often political cold-opening mocked Senator Harry Reid's desire to distance himself from President Obama, going so far as to reveal him to be a "birther" calling for Obama's birth certificate.

The sketch begins with President Obama appearing at a rally for the Democratic senator in Nevada. Reid, played by newcomer Paul Brittain, mentions that since neither of them is very popular in the state, it would help if he put some distance between them.

Reid then takes the podium and begins proclaiming that he and the President are "not close at all" and "barely know each other" before asking why, if he was born in the United States, he won't just show everyone his birth certificate.

Aside from painting him as a birther, "SNL" also took jabs at Reid for "double crossing" the President and for pretending to agree with the him when it's good for Nevada but disagreeing with him on every other issue.

I was waiting for the punchline, then it came. Then, I realized I was laughing at Max the pig on GEICO.

The guy playing Harry Reid looks more like his son Rory Reid.

I was not too fond of that. Come on SNL. There is so much raw material on these wackos of the GOP, I want to see the GOP Feminazis-Palin, Angle, O'Donnell, Brewer, Bachmann, Cheney. For crying out loud there is a homicidal right to lifer in the bunch.
How about a skit with the FNs demonizing everyone else but them as lesbians, witches, spinsters and uglies, amoral Godless libs?

SNL has been very timid around their corporate sponsors. SNL is no longer relevant, let alone funny.

I stopped watching a while ago...even hen they made fun of Palin I thought they sort of ran their course and after a while Tina Fey wasnt funny...how long are they going to do these skits? We have to look at BS politics everday in this country, you mean to tell us that we cant even watch Saturday Night Live without politics?? Geez.

This skit made no sense, was not funny and was a terrible way to open their show. I watched just enough to see what they'd do with the NY Governor debate. Not much.
The best skit was Brett Favre and the open jeans. Other than that, nothing to make me watch again.

Well, if nothing else, I hope the president watched. It reminds me all too well of his support from some so called reasonable republicans. The whole Nevada senate race reminds me of a race in Louisiana a while back. The Democrat who was a bit of crook was running against a Republican who was a great deal worst. The most endearing add said ‘Vote for the crook, it’s important!”
In Nevada, I would say “vote for the sane one, he’s Harry Reid”

It was bad, very bad. This guy cannot play Obama, never been able and never will, give up.

SNL ceased being funny long ago.
10:19 AM on 10/25/2010
Yes, I guess it is unfunny when an honest question is asked. Transparency?

Your wife is a Bigfoot. Show me her papers.

Whats sad is that you people dont know that SNL is mocking YOU when they have their characters ask that question.

...and Fred Armisen's Obama impersonation seems to get worse every week. Someone else in the SNL cast desperately needs to take over...maybe that dude who does the spot-on Denzel Washington impression.
06:53 PM on 10/26/2010
I know, I wish they would get that guy too...he was really good with the Denzel and Will Smith. He would probably make a better Obama because Armisen is not even trying, LOL

This was probably one of the most unfunny sketches in SNL history. Not a great way to start the show. The rest of the episode was awful too - save for Kenan Thompson's Jimmy McMillan...that was as shining moment for him (I also love when he portrays Whoopi).
