Joe Miller Reveals New Details About Ethics Breach

Joe Miller

AP / The Huffington Post   First Posted: 10/25/10 05:59 PM ET Updated: 05/25/11 07:05 PM ET

JUNEAU, Alaska — Alaska GOP Senate candidate Joe Miller has acknowledged that he was disciplined for violating an ethics policy while working as a local government attorney in 2008.

The admission came Sunday night in an Anchorage debate with two rivals following a judge's order that his personnel file from his time at the Fairbanks North Star Borough be released. Several news organizations had sued for the information.

Speculation over the issue and Miller's earlier refusal to discuss it had become a key topic of the campaign.

After a former borough mayor said Miller was nearly fired for using government computers in a failed effort to oust the state GOP chairman in 2008, Miller told CNN he had violated ethics policy.

On Sunday, Miller said he was suspended for or docked three days' pay for participating in a private poll during his lunch hour. He said it was a mistake he's learned from.

Miller's critics have questioned his character in light of the issues stemming from his employment and disclosures that his family had received federal government benefits like Medicaid, unemployment and farm subsidies – benefits the fiscal conservative has raised concerns with as a candidate. Miller has said he no longer receives benefits.

Sen. Lisa Murkowski, who's running as a write-in candidate after losing the GOP primary to Miller, questioned his fitness to serve in the Senate – a comment that drew loud jeers from the debate audience in Anchorage.

Miller said Alaskans probably know more about him than any other candidate. And he said that's probably a good thing because they "get to understand that, hey, they're electing somebody like them."

During a sometimes tense debate that also included Democrat Scott McAdams, Miller questioned Murkowski about her own past and a land deal in which she bought property in what some saw as a sweetheart deal. She had said she thought she'd paid fair market value and later sold it back.

She countered that her life has been open to scrutiny and took aim at Miller for being months-late in filing a required financial disclosure. She asked Miller what he thinks his fellow West Point graduates would think about the way he's conducted himself.

He said there are West Point graduates working on his campaign who know his "warts and all" and stand behind him "proudly."

He accused her campaign of working to dig up dirt on him and to "cheat" voters of a substanative debate on the issues facing the state and nation.

Former Alaska Governor and Miller supporter Sarah Palin pounced on Murkowski's West Point comments on Monday. In a tweet, Palin called Murkowski's comments a "horrific attack on Miller's military honor" and followed up with a Facebook post titled "Lisa's Gall vs. Joe's Honor."

The rivalry between Murkowski and Palin rivalry dates back to Murkowski's selection as a Senator by her father, then-Governor Frank Murkowski and Palin has decided to endorse Miller despite his recent comments that Palin qualifies -- minimally -- to run for the U.S. presidency.

I have been impressed by the Campaign Joe Miller is running! Its obvious that he is pulling out all the stops, running as hard as he can to avoid ending his life in the slam! He seems to think he gets immunity if he is elected to dog catcher or Senator of anything!

Not True Joe! And your supporters are running the risk of a Federal - not Alaskan - rap for protecting a felon on the lam!

Palin and Miller are doing their best to convince us that the purchase of Alaska really was Seward's Folly. How many idiots does Alaska have? We know of at least two and then there are the security goons who arrested the reporter/editor illegally. It would be of great pleasure to shut down Palin and Miller immediately before they gain any traction.

It would be funny if it was not so sad. Joe Miller just wants a job where ethics don't matter.

To clarify. I am not an Alaskan resident - so I cannot vote there - but I was typing (sarcastically) that I'd vote for Murkowski (just to spite the Tea Party). I LOVE the Dem candidate McAdams and would have ACTUALLY Vote for him ... again assuming I were a resident of Alaska. I think McAdams or democrats usually carry (or at least do well in) Girdwood ( I LOVE that place & Alyeska).

So, I cannot find the original reply to my OP - but trying to clarify LOL ;-)
Also - despite what the rest of the country thinks - Palin is not really well-liked in Alaska.

Why would Miller receive any “social benefits?” Benefits fiscal conservatives abhor and constantly BASH...

Miller’s character in light of the issues stemming from his employment and disclosures that his family had received federal government benefits like Medicaid, unemployment AND farm subsidies.

Miller has said he no longer receives benefits, but he did so. . . What does this say about Miller?
06:12 PM on 10/27/2010
Miller opposes Federal mandates and large centralized fiscal behemoths. Denali KidCare is a state program. He accepted unemployment (which program he, like other citizens, pay into through their payroll deductions), and he received a farm subsidy. Could be he opposes the farm subsidies now as a result of having gone through the process...don't know. Seems you libs want a shining beacon of perfection in order to serve, but I seem to remember a Dem pres who lied UNDER OATH. If any lie is a disqualification, then certainly Billy boy should have been denounced rather than excused. I point this out not to absolve Miller, but to highlight the glaring inconsistencies in the lib-dem rhetoric.
I received state assistance when pregnant with my first daughter. I worked very hard to get off AFDC--it ain't easy. Had I been more aware of other non-governmental resources I may have been less inclined to get ensnared by the dole system. It took 18 mos. to extricate myself--and my case worker called me a success story, because so many lose the incentive to consider these entitlement programs short-term and then begin to treat them exactly as the moniker says, as entitlements. How finely polished is the glass in YOUR house???
06:17 PM on 10/27/2010
oh, and the subsidies he received were less than 8K over 7 years...not exactly suckling off the govt teat.
The media needs an October suprise, one that will undermine Miller enough to ensure that a run off between McAdams and Murkowski will take place, ensuring that Ms. Lisa, who has been such a friend to Alaska that we are ever more reliant on federal dollars to sustain our economy. Good luck with that

ADN COMMENT

Call out the law on this scofflaw.
Anyone caught stealing a legal colleagues identity is really a law breaker. Miller is so naive he doesn't think he was wrong. And did he get a Section 8 out of the Army cause someone in command thought he was too immature, addled, or ridiculous?
That is what he has proven since everyone began looking at his personality flaws, character flaws, and inability to discern right from wrong!
This just since the end of August. No wonder the command must have gone good-bye. Big time trouble!

Ok, so, question: Is megalomania a personality flaw, is not acknowledging the rhetoric and sentiment spewed from a pulpit over the course of nearly two decades not an inablility to discern right from wrong (at least that is ALL I "hope" it was), is not acknowledging the ideological stances of his early supporters and what they might expect or even require not a character flaw? These are the hallmarks of our illustrious president who the Huff and Puff post pays such deep obeisance. Require more out of your party movers and shakers! Require more of yourselves.

Not much is it? But rules are rules, and if it had been a Dem, you'd be chitting yourself would't you?
01:04 PM on 10/28/2010
Not really. The dems are too busy surfing po rn to bother taking polls.

If he had been a dem, you would be defending him--even if he'd set off a bomb somewhere (as many of you defended those who did so recently in Europe, while out of the other side of your mouths you were all in a twist about violence that "might" happen at some tea party (but never actually did).

When you work for government there are very strict rules that must be followed, because you have the public trust. He not only used his computer, but he used the computers of co workers. He behaved unethically and illegally. He is an attorney and is held to a higher standard. I used to work for government and we take our oath of office very seriously, because we represent citizens in an unbiased way. This man is the lowest of the low by government worker standards. Think about it. Do you expect people who are payed by public taxes to abuse your trust in them? I think not.
01:06 PM on 10/28/2010
You're entirely right of course. Did you apply the same code to our Treasury Sec when he hadn't paid his taxes? Or all the folks using their govt computers to surf po rn? I hope so.
This just seems pretty trivial.

It just KEEPS getting better - and BETTER!! Just close the spaces below.

http :// alaskadispatch. com/ dispatches/ politics/ 7250-joe-millers-mysterious-mat-su-hideaway

For the past 14 years, U.S. Senate candidate Joe Miler has owned or controlled 40 acres with a two-story house near Willow, but he does not report it in his Senate financial disclosure statements.

The deed for the property is recorded in the name of "The Wilmington Trust," but the woman named as the trustee says she had no idea of the exact nature of her legal connections and obligations to the property. Whether a trust actually exists is unclear.

Though not reported on his Senate disclosure forms, the property has in the past been reported by Miller in state financial disclosure records.

When he took a job as a state magistrate in the late 1990s, he filed an Alaska Public Offices Commission report that listed the owners of the property as three of his children and their interest in the property as a "trust.'' The property was at that time reported to be vacant.

In the years following, Miller added additional children to the list of named owners, and changed the state of the property from a trust to an "ownership-trust,'' or an "ownership, trust.'' The property was reported to be a "rental'' in a 1999 report and a "rental-farm" in a 2000 report.

But Miller's name does not appear on the deed registered with the state...

What about Miller hiring his wife, which was against the rules, and when he had to let
her go, he helped her fill out to collect, unemployment benefits- you know the job entitlement
program he wants to do away with..
How are these candidates doing well in the polls?

they are doing "well' for a number of reasons but I suspect the underlying message of most if not all of the teabags is big oh tree. That is to say, ....oh dear gawd. You either understand and disparage these folks for their underlying motivation or you're a teabag. It's that simple.
