Infecting over 3,000 people and killing at least 250, a cholera outbreak is currently sweeping across Haiti, bringing a new wave of tragedy to a nation which, until now, had been slowly recovering from a massive earthquake earlier this year.

Unfortunately, the cholera outbreak is only the latest in a line of infectious diseases to strike one of the world's developing regions in recent years. From the bubonic plague in the Middle Ages to the bird flu which swept the globe less than two years ago, chronic outbreaks are commonplace, particularly in densely-populated regions where such ailments are most easily spread.
