The Lowdown On Four Loko: By The Numbers

The Huffington Post     First Posted: 10/27/10 01:41 PM ET   Updated: 05/25/11 07:10 PM ET

Four Loko, the highly caffeinated alcoholic beverage jokingly referred to as "blackout in a can" and "liquid crack," is not all that funny. The drink -- the idea of which was concocted by three Ohio State University graduates in 2005 -- has been implicated in multiple hospitalizations and at least one heart attack. Officials in several states are calling for it to be banned.

Below, we let the numbers associated with Four Loko speak for themselves. Let us know if you have more to add in the comments section.

So ignoring the caffeine issue entirely... they say four loko is 12% abv, that's three times a miller light - looked it up, miller light is about 4% abv. So, if a can of four loko is about 24 oz, that's the same volume as two bottles of beer, but 3 times the alcohol content... So it's like a six pack in one can. Wow!

Tried the lemonade flavor before our state (WA) banned 'em. It was absolutely disgusting. Like sticking your mouth next to a petroleum cracking plant's exhaust column.

I'll have the four beers and two cups of coffee. WTF is the difference anyhow?

And this is what the FDA is upset about? They should be focused on the bad eggs that are being sold around the country.

WOW. Four beers + 2 cups of coffee in ONE drink? Thats asking for trouble.

Now I understand why the FDA is investigating.

How is this any more dangerous than an Irish coffee? Should we ban those too?

I think its a matter of dosage. It contains the equivalent of 4 beers + 2 cups of coffee in one drink. I think thats kind of hazardous.

I'm fine with the concept of selling booze with alcohol. But to sell it in a 23oz can with no way to reseal it, it seems implicit that it is meant to be drunk by one person and all at once. Yes, they list what the ABV is on the side of the can, but they do not make it clear that one can equals four or more beers. For a large chunk of the population, one can is more than enough to make you legally drunk. If they sold it in 8oz cans, it would still be more alcohol than a beer.

They should either downsize the product or reduce the alcohol.

19 Age of the otherwise healthy young man who suffered a heart attack, which his doctor believes may have been caused by consumption of Four Loko.

Well you need to be 21 to drink, can blame Four Loko for that one (not saying it wouldn't have happened to a 21 year old, but he wasn't of age to drink).

Also there isn't any training to drink responsibly when you hit 21.

They came first for the Four Loko drinkers,
and I didn't speak up because I drank Cisco.

Then they came for the Schlitz Malt Liquor drinkers,
and I didn't speak up because I drank St. Ides.

Then they came for the Boone's Farm drinkers,
and I didn't speak up because I drank MD 20/20.

Then they came for me
and by that time I was gettin' over on your mama.

I think this article doesn't like Four Loko. How is #9 related to this at all?

"Four Loko encourages the brutalization and rape of homosexuals"

Kids will be dumb, we will get way too drunk, then we will drink way too much caffeine. How about you let us do it on the cheap?

I agree about how #9 is not really related. I don't think it was the rapists who had ten of these, but they forced their victim to down ten drinks.
If this stuff is so bad, then how come the rape victim there's no mention of heart problems in his case? Ten of these is supposedly equal to 60 light beers + 20 cups of coffee.
Yes, I realize there's other serious issues that probably put the victim in the hospital. Which is why I question #9 at all. Shouldn't there have been a #11 (1) number of male rape victims after being forced to drink 10 FourLokos?
Rape is never fun, and it actually proves the weakness in the perpetrators rather than the victims.
09:32 AM on 11/09/2010
Agreed. I think #9 was just a cheap shot that adds nothing to the debate. The fact that thugs enjoy it, or enjoy torturing people with it, means nothing.

I think the bottom line isn't whether or not Four Loko is bad for you, I think all the evidence points to the fact that it is, but rather whether or not it's legal to ban a substance that's composed of elements that can still be ordered and mixed at any bar. College students can and will order rounds of red bull vodkas and jager bombs to get the same effects, just at quadruple the price.

Screw you! It's good and I like it! I think its tasty, and I don't owe you little college brats anything! You jerks are supposed to be getting an education and moving up in the world, not "blacking out" and hosing around.

Actually, I think all this started was because of the beer and liquors and all kinds of alcohol the Americans had been drinking for the past hundreds of years. They are addicted. And this addiction will carry on because the people still do not "see" it as harmful. After all, they say, no one really dies from it.

saves money, gets you drunk, you have a good time and its brings out the crazyyyyy. all this media coverage is stemming from little kids who have no experience with drinking and i can say that if these were around when i was 16 or 17 i would probably be part of the statistics. but im 22 and in college and everyone is drinking these things. you have to know your limits and know what your getting yourself into with these bad boys. FOUR LOKO R NO JOKO!!! lol
