In Gulf Of Mexico, 'They Are Literally Shrimping In Oil'

Gulf Oil Shrimp

Earlier this week, we made note of BP CEO Bob Dudley's complaint that the media, in their routine efforts to document the truth about what was happening in the Gulf of Mexico, had created such a gigantic "climate of fear" that he had no other choice but to wage a widespread campaign to harass and intimidate reporters. Because of the fear, you see! Such as, the "fear" that the correct oil spill rate might get reported, for example.

Well, if there's one thing Dudley can do, right now, to bring a renewed sense of peace and calm to the Gulf Coast region, it's this: he could roll on down to the bayou and tuck in to a heaping plate of freshly-caught shrimp. There's only one little thing to be concerned about, however, according to the Inter Press Service:

Massive slicks of weathered oil were clearly visible near Louisiana's fragile marshlands in both the East and West Bays of the Mississippi River Delta during an overflight that included an IPS reporter on Oct. 23. The problem is that, despite this, the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries has left much of the area open for fishing.

[...]

"They are literally shrimping in oil," Jonathan Henderson, the Coastal Resiliency Organiser for the environmental group Gulf Restoration Network, who was also on the flight, exclaimed as our plane flew over shrimpers trawling in the oil-covered area.

Others remain concerned about the use of toxic dispersants that BP has used to sink the oil.

"Potential ecosystem collapse caused by toxic dispersant use during this disaster will have immediate and long-term effects on the Gulf's traditional fishing communities' ability to sustain our culture and heritage," Clint Guidry of the Louisiana Shrimp Association told IPS.

"This has been an exercise in lessening BP's liability from day one. I think we're moving into a situation where the PR is saying the area is safe to fish and it's safe to eat, but that's not the reality," he said.

Surely this is nothing that Bob Dudley is afraid of!

When asked to comment, the Teabaggers said the fishermen should be lucky they don't have to reimburse BP for the oil and Corexit.

They also refused to eat any seafood.

From the song Cry For The Fishermen:

And oil company greed
The real cause of this mess
Investors have their profit needs
Forget about the costly safety tests

The crew had orders don’t you know
Losing money every day
Drill faster you're going too slow!
Gotta hit oil it’s the only way

And I cry for the Fishermen…I cry for them
Cries of anger…Cries of fear
When will this madness come to an end

Have we learned anything
Or will we let this happen all again

don't eat this shrimp or swim in the waters....highly carcinogenic benzene which comprises up to 5% of crude has appreciable solubility in water....

Jason, Please indicate when you are going to correct the inaccurate report of oil in West Bay?

"Meanwhile, analysis of a recent algae bloom in West Bay off the Mississippi River Delta indicated no presence of Macondo oil. USCS Rear Adm. Paul Zukunft said “When you have a red algae bloom, it looks very similar to that orange emulsified oil that we had at the peak of the spill. Since it was an algae bloom, there was no [oil] recovery operation required.”"

We are not going to have anything done to fix this problem until we have tens of thousands sick or dying from oil spill related illnesses.
08:43 AM on 10/31/2010
And if they do not eventuate, will that mean there was not a problem?

We know the results of previous oil spills and this one was the worst in US history. The results of this spill are continuous and long standing. Adding increased health consequences from eating petroleum is not in our best interests. We need real and truthful reporting in order to make good policy choices about the value of ocean drilling. We need information for health care risks and treatments. We cannot tolerate the censureship of information about the oil spill or the use of dispersant. The opening of waters for fishing needs to be based on reality, not wishful thinking.

Lets take a look what we have to look forward to if we choose to eat this shrimp and other seafood (unless "choice" is an illusion)....

I read this and it is absolutely horrible. Where is the mainstream reporting on this in our country? If there was responsible reporting, perhaps many of these people would have been able to take seriously their activities, particularly those whose symptoms came about from making unnecessary contact w/ toxic beaches and waters (taking walks, swimming). Those who are still trying to make their livings from the toxic dump in the Gulf need to be compensated for lost wages and STOP FISHING.

No trips to the Gulf for my family; I only wish I could have seen it in its glory.

Did they also report it to their other constituents?

The Administration is to be feared. "Aljazeera" is a credible source. Think about that.

Hard up for environmental news, HP has chosen to rehash a 5-day old story which they failed to retract and correct 5 days ago.

That is unless the Coast Guard does not know the difference between algae and oil.

But, but, but... the EPA said it's all completely safe!
In related news, the death toll of Ground Zero volunteers is still on the rise after the EPA said the air was safe to breathe.
I don't think I'm going to listen to the EPA anymore.

The conservative answer to this is that it makes easier and cheaper to cook... you don't have to add oil to the pan. Problem solved!
12:56 AM on 10/29/2010
no most conservatives are smart enough not to eat the shrimp

Explain to us, please, how the HELL this is Obama's fault?? BP knew the cement used in the well was substandard and they used it anyway. Did I miss something? Does Obama run BP now?? Give me a friggin break. You need new things to blame on him, as if the old things weren't stupid enough in most cases?
