Obama Signals Shift On Gay Marriage Support

Obama Gay Marriage

President Obama told a group of progressive bloggers Wednesday that his attitude about same-sex marriage, an issue that he has consistently and openly opposed, was beginning to "evolve."

From the discussion:

But I also think you're right that attitudes evolve, including mine. And I think that it is an issue that I wrestle with and think about because I have a whole host of friends who are in gay partnerships. I have staff members who are in committed, monogamous relationships, who are raising children, who are wonderful parents.

And I care about them deeply. And so while I'm not prepared to reverse myself here, sitting in the Roosevelt Room at 3:30 in the afternoon, I think it's fair to say that it's something that I think a lot about. That's probably the best you'll do out of me today.

Obama then continued, calling himself a "strong supporter of civil unions" who was uncomfortable getting behind legislation to broaden marriage rights for gay couples because of his "understandings of the traditional definitions of marriage."

The president and his administration have taken their lumps from the gay rights community over the Justice Department's recently successful appeal of a federal court decision that had forced the military to halt its "don't ask, don't tell" policy.

Obama addressed his future plans to get rid of the anti-gay protocol, though not in great detail, telling the group that he had a "strategy" outlined for the upcoming lame-duck Congressional session. The important thing, he said, would be getting Log Cabin Republicans to pressure their Senators to support the legislation when it came out in order to secure the necessary 60 vote margin.

POTUS is forever evolving. Guess that's the audacity of hoping to compromise.

I don't really care if Obama is seen as evolving. Just evolve already. I'm sick and tired of hearing about his "evolution." That's political speak for, "I know where I should be, and I have no problem being there, other than the fact there's another constituency whose vote I need who hates gay people." Either you stand for principles of equality or you don't. Either you believe separate is not equal or you don't. Either you recognize that the Bible was used to justify slavery, to support anti-miscengination laws, to deny women the right to vote, to support every form of discrimination in society, or you don't. And if you don't, and if you can't stand up for what is right, then I can't vote for you. So evolve. Now.

No one right of center is going to support him anyway, so why not go all in. It might at least strengthen his base.

It ought to be the law that the government would only perform civil unions for everyone gay or straight.

It would then be up to churches to recognize or not recognize such unions and perform a religious marriage as they see fit.

That would make everyone equal before the law which is all the government can do, and it would not impinge on any religious communities rights to worship how they see fit. Where's the harm in such a compromise?

Marriage is a legal construct. You cannot legally get married without a license from the state. Whether or not you go to a religious institution for a ceremony is completely optional. There is absolutely no interest in forcing churches perform weddings that go against their beliefs. It already happens -- non-catholics cannot get married in a catholic church, for instance. Everyone SHOULD be equal before the law. That is precisely the argument.

My husband is non-Catholic and we were married in a Catholic church. Just FYI...

Hey Obama, I'm evolving too, and what I think about alot is whether I would vote for you if some friendlier challenger comes along in 2012. Gay marriage isn't the only thing you've disappointed me on, and while I would never have voted for John McCain, I sometimes wonder if Hillary would not have made a more effective president. Right now, she appears to be doing her job a lot better than you are doing yours!

His big strategy on repealing DADT is to get the Log Cabin Republicans to pressure the GOP to repeal? I've personally never noticed that the LCR have any clout whatsoever with the GOP. I'm beginning to think we have just another wishy-washy Dem in the White House.

When he openly supports my equal citizenship, I'll consider voting form him. Until then, his political calculus has determined that my rights don't matter so my vote shouldn't matter much either,
08:50 PM on 11/01/2010
And that's why you should vote for a Tea Party candidate?

yeah what's the alternative. its like i could vote for the cold soup (gross) or I could drink poison. You have no alternative. Your choice is a candidate who is not effective enough or a candidate who actively seeks your destruction.

It's a state issue right now.

He's done more than any president before him. Sorry it's not moving fast enough for you, but the alternative is a reversal of the progress that's been made.

OH pray tell how much he has done for us? Got DADT reinstated indefinitely? Had his DOJ defend DOMA and compare us to pedophiles and those who perpetrate incest. Oh yeah, with friends like this, who needs enemies?

In this case 6 1/2 years.

I don't think he really cares...I think he is just playing it safe. If he gets a second term....game over.

You'd be surprised. Many politicians become audacious during a final term simply because they don't have to worry about whether or not they will be re-elected.

Yes, but I don't see that happening in Obam's case. He says what he has to say to keep GLBT people voting Democratic. Unfortunately a lot of gays have started getting wise...

Funny coincidence Mr. President, that is exactly how I feel about financially supporting you.

I agree. My view has also evolved.

Whenever I received an email from the White House asking for money to support some political initiative I used to reach for my credit card.

Now I just reach out and tap the delete key.
