GOP Senate Candidate Flees Questions About Hiring Illegal Immigrant

Roy Blunt, Missouri's GOP Senate candidate, didn't take kindly to being asked by a reporter recently about allegations that he had employed an illegal immigrant more than 20 years ago.

In the face of Democratic accusations that Blunt had hired an undocumented Nicaraguan woman in 1990 to do work for his wife at the time, a Missouri reporter asked the Senate hopeful at a Kansas City event to answer some questions regarding the matter.

Here's the dialogue between reporter Michael Mahoney and Blunt, from Fired Up Missouri:

MICHAEL MAHONEY: Did you know this woman you wrote the letter for, or not?

BLUNT: What a -- You know, that's just such nonsense, Mike, and you know it. And it's desperation politics on their side. And, uh, these issues are bigger than that. We put a statement on that at the time. It was accurate at the time. You can go back and read it.

MAHONEY: Did you know her or not?

BLUNT: We put a statement on that at the time. And it's exactly accurate. You read it, and you know what it says.

Blunt's campaign has been consistent with this type of rhetoric. It has mounted a full denial tour, despite claims by the housekeeper, a Nicaraguan woman named Dora Narvaez, as well as a decades-old letter written by then-Missouri Secretary of State Blunt to then-INS chief Gene McNary on behalf of Narvaez, that would suggest otherwise.

"I don't know if I ever met the woman," Blunt told a St. Louis Post-Dispatch editorial board during an interview.
