13 Haunted Campuses (PHOTOS)

As Halloween rolls gustily around the corner, some of us might wax nostalgic for the hallowed eves of yore -- when we ate our weight in sugary sweets, dressed up in uncomfortable costumes and listened to stories that we knew would give us nightmares. Just because we're older doesn't mean we can't indulge in that last tradition (or the first two, for that matter) -- even college campuses have their share of spooky lore.

Below, check out 13 haunted college campuses and the tales behind their ghostly reputations. Is your campus afflicted by a wandering poltergeist? Share your stories in the comments section!

Keene State College: Huntress Hall
1 of 14
According to school lore, Huntress Hall has been haunted ever since the ghost of its namesake, Harriet Lane Huntress, learned that the dorm -- designed to house 157 females -- was transformed into co-ed housing during WWII. Apparently upset by the gender imbalance, Huntress has continued to creak about on her ghostly (but, according to Keene State students, loud) wheelchair in the hall's attic to this day.

Virtually all of Wells College is haunted. Here are the maine (lulz) stories told around campus: http://aurora.wells.edu/~library/ghosts.htm

As for the corresponding picture in this article...that's the Wells boathouse (hence that tag on the bottom right).

Sorry for sounding a bit like a pretentious, pedantic, condescending, latte-guzzling, hybrid-driving, liberal elitist from some obscure NYS ivory tower, but a.) lazy journalism is annoying even in superduper fluff pieces like this and b.) maybe I was just born this way. YOU DON'T KNOW ME!

P.S. Ghosts aren't real. Right?

Cheesman Park in Denver was built where a graveyard for murderers and such used to be -- a bunch of bones were found during some recent work on pipes. Lots of tales of haunted areas of the park, cool spots, etc.

Detail on the legend, and spooky tales:

Eastern Illinois University- Pemberton Hall, the oldest women's dormitory in Illinois. Here is a link to the story of Mary Hawkins, who is said to still haunt the dorm...

I've only been in Pem a few times, its a pretty cool old building. My mom lived there when she attended EIU in the 70s, she lived on the 3rd floor and said they would often hear weird noises from the 4th floor even though no one was allowed up there.

University of Delaware--- the former Deer Park Inn (now called the Raven or something like that) was the temporary home of Edgar Allen Poe and is absolutely haunted. Not to mention that a student were shot in a duel a few away on the steps of Academy Hall back in the day... It is said that his steps are still heard late at night on the anniversary of the Duel.

I don't understand how William and Mary, which is not only one of the oldest campuses in the country, but hosts ghosts tours through the older sections of campus, is not on this list.

Not sure where that picture for Hamilton came from, but it's not from our campus. Here's a picture of the real Alumni House you are welcome to use.

Although I work in that building, I haven't managed to find any ghosts. Yet.

Fordham has at least 3 haunted dorms. Keating Hall isn't one of them though.

Dealy hall, a current dorm was a converted medical school that housed a morgue and observation halls for dissections.

Queens Court is allegedly haunted by the ghost of a girl and former Jesuit.

In Martyrs Court residents have heard a little girl running down the hall in the middle of the night and heard noises in a shower where a girl committed suicide.

You mean Finlay Hall instead of Dealy Hall

Indeed I did. I hope they don't take back my diploma, they just gave it to me. ;)
