Los Angeles Art Scene: Heavy Hitters In LA's Art World

The beginning of gala season in Los Angeles is bringing out the city's heavy hitters when it comes to art philanthropy, curation, and cultural tastemaking--and people are starting to notice that more faces are crowding the spotlight when it comes to the city's art scene. Hollywood actors and personalities like Nicole Richie and Tom Hanks are showing up on the red carpets of gallery openings, and the city is buzzing with neighborhood art walks, festivals, and a youthful art patronage group. The Wall Street Journal recently put out the Los Angeles Power List behind the art boom which includes "800 pound gorilla" Eli Broad and Stewart and Lynda Resnick of the POM Wonderful fortune (and patrons of the recently opened Resnick Pavilion at LACMA). Here's a few more people to look out for at the next art fete, both well-known and up-and-coming.

The multi-pronged Broad Foundations seek to lift up the arts and civic institutions in Los Angeles, as well as education and science. Broad has recently begun planning a contemporary art museum located in Downtown Los Angeles to house the Broad Art Foundation's Collection, over 2,000 works of art. Broad has also financed the Broad Contemporary art museum in LACMA (Los Angeles County Museum of Art) and pledged $30 million to MOCA (Museum of Contemporary Art) in 2008 to save it from bankruptcy.
