Time's Election Preview Makes Bold Prediction

Time magazine's cover story in advance of next week's midterms draws down on what's certain to be a post-election conversation -- the ascendance of new, outside-the-establishment conservatives to political office. We'll see how this cover stands up, however. Featured as "Party Crashers" -- the "new breed of Republicans who tapped into voter rage and upset the establishment" -- are Meg Whitman, Marco Rubio, Rand Paul, and Christine O'Donnell.

The cover asks, "Can they govern?" That looks like a question applicable only to Rubio and Paul. Whitman is fading in the polls despite having belched $140 million all over California. And the Christine O'Donnell campaign has been a dead letter since the Delaware primary. I'm prepared to be surprised, of course! If all four of these candidates actually end up governing, maybe Rick Stengel can get a commemorative cover edition out of this very daring quasi-prediction.
