I love this! Who knew?

This is one of my favorite holidays, but I always worried that most of the pumpkins go to waste. It makes me happy that animals (other than squirrels) enjoy the bounty.

There are some lovely videos of big cats playing with pumpkins at the Florida big cat rescue shelter:

They're practically kittenish.

Most of those animals appear to have been declawed. A great disservice to them.

Yes, some of them may have been -- though it's hard to tell which cats aren't using their claws because they don't have any and which ones are trying not to destroy the new toy too soon. And remember, it's a rescue sanctuary. These were cats that some silly bunnies thought would be nifty pets. Absolutely daft. We took in a semi-feral cat (normal housecat breed) a couple of winters ago and we still respect his claws, even though he's mellowed substantially.

I didn't know that hippos and elephants could eat (swallow) whole pumpkins, though I'm sure the handlers know what they are doing.

They can chomp them up okay. That shot of the hippos open mouth is a great reminder of how dangerous they are.

So lovely! I like numbers 3, 8, 9 and 15 a lot. I adore big cats and meerkats.

Here are some more from the UK. The second one in the gallery of a Siberian cub is adorable.

Ok, so normally I don't go in for this sort of thing, but flipping through the photos, I couldn't help but notice the second hippo in slide 7. Hippos are some of the most dangerous critters on this planet, and this one's got this expectant look on it's face, like somebody's dog begging at the kitchen table.

Surreal.
