Food Cart Vendors Sleep In Their Carts To Hang Onto Best Street Spots

What would you do to hang on to a choice parking spot?

Some of New York's food cart vendors sleep in their carts to hang on to their spots and avoid paying storage fees.

The city Department of Health requires that food vendors clear the streets after closing, then go to a commissary where the carts are washed and stored. But The Post found food wagons loitering on trendy streets around SoHo and Union Square at all hours of the night.

The paper sent a reporter to SoHo where she found a worker hiding in a gray hoodie sleeping in a halal food cart at West Broadway and Broome Street, a "dozing, cherub-faced worker" in the "Little Cupcake Lover" at Broadway and Houston and four empty carts blocking the sidewalk for no obvious reason.

"That's crazy!" said Jennifer Suarez of Astoria. "You shouldn't sleep where you serve food."
