In states across the country on Tuesday, voters will weigh in on some of the year's most contentious and bitter midterm fights as candidates go head-to-head to claim a seat in United States Senate.

It is widely presumed that Republicans will make gains in their quest to tilt the balance of power back in their favor in the upper Congressional chamber; however, the magnitude of the shift in power election day could produce remains unclear. A number of the showdowns set to unfold remain deadlocked as voters hit the polls.
