Michael Bennet Defeats Ken Buck In Colorado Senate Race

Colorado Election Results

DENVER — Sen. Michael Bennet narrowly defeated tea party Republican Ken Buck on Wednesday, allowing Democrats to hold onto a Senate seat once viewed as a prime opportunity for the GOP to make gains.

Bennet provided a crucial firewall during midterm elections in which Republicans made a historic surge. But his win looked anything but certain.

The Colorado race attracted more out-of-state campaign money than any other Senate contest this year, prompting a stream of vicious attack ads as both parties viewed the contest as the one that could tip the balance of power in Congress.

Buck, an affable campaigner whose folksy charm launched him over a better-funded Republican primary opponent, had a small lead heading into the election, according to many polls.

But with 97 percent of the projected vote counted Wednesday, Bennet was leading by about 15,400 votes out of 1.4 million cast.

Bennet himself seemed pleasantly surprised when he declared victory. He talked about the national anti-incumbent mood, and the perception that Republicans would rack up victories all across the country.

"When they get to Colorado, let me tell you, they're not going to know what happened," Bennet said Wednesday in a victory speech outside the Denver museum where President Barack Obama last year signed the stimulus bill into law.

More than a hundred Democrats packed the plaza to cheer for the party's better-than-predicted performance here. Democrats lost two House seat to the GOP, but one vulnerable House Democrat in the Denver suburbs hung on, and the party's gubernatorial candidate, Denver Mayor John Hickenlooper, won easily in a three-way contest.

Left-leaning Democratic allies also succeeded in defeating a raft of Colorado ballot measures proposed by conservatives, including a measure outlawing abortion and a trio of measures to reduce taxes and government borrowing.

The Senate win came after Bennet drubbed Buck as an out-of-touch extremist.

Bennet and Democratic allies reminded Colorado's moderate voters that Buck opposes abortion, even in cases of rape and incest; that he had questioned the separation of church and state; and that he said sexual orientation is a choice. The too-extreme-for-Colorado theme helped counter heavy spending from outside conservative groups.

Buck conceded the race with a message on his Facebook page.

"While the final margin in the race is very small, Colorado voters have spoken," Buck wrote.

Bennet, 45, was appointed to the seat last year to replace Ken Salazar, who became Interior Secretary. Before his appointment, Bennet was superintendent of Denver Public Schools and had never run for public office.

Democrats retained control of the Senate on Tuesday, though they lost at least six seats to the GOP. Senate races in Washington and Alaska were too close to call Wednesday.

While the Teapublican Party crows about their electoral mandate. They should keep in mind former Bush Secretary of State General Colin Powell's "Pottery Barn" rule, stated to Dear and Blessed Leader when the Bush/Cheney/Wolfowitz/Feith/Oil industry lobbyists crew engineered the Iraq invasion:

"You broke it.
Now you own it.
How are you going to put it back together?"

When conservatives hype the Faux's ratings they are ignoring one simple fact: Faux is only popular amoung really old people:

Average Viewer Age:

The problem is that young people don't watch cable news or even regular TV for that matter. They get all their news from the Internet.

According to Alexa, the top internet news/political sites are all LIBERAL. The New York times on line is the highest. Huf.fing.ton Post second highest, tied with Fox News. All the rest of the conservative sites are much lower:

Yes but those are also the people who vote. They actually understand the value of it and consider it to be a privilege. The eat up all that garbage and are scared into motoring there little Medicare scooter down to the elementary school to vote against the liberal who want to take away their Social Security and Medicare.

And so, when faced with a choice between a Progressive and a Teabagger, Colorado chose the former.

Our state is turning blue! :-)

BENNET is an Evan Bayh CONSERVADEM.

Any notion that he is a progressive will only be proven by the issue he is willing to risk his senate seat for. His past performance, selling out on the PUBLIC OPTION and CARD CHECK suggests we shouldn't expect much from him.

I predict that "tea" will have a short shelf-life in this country. Say about two years? Rand Paul is already changing his position on earmarks and I believe that once the tea party gets to DC, they'll be shown the ropes by the rest of congress and magically morph into good little servants of the special interests like all good politicians. Once they understand that the only way to keep their seats is to play ball with the lobbyists, they'll be lining up at home plate. Remember, these aren't very bright individuals to begin with, and the dim are easily corrupted, especially by such a powerful force as the US Congress!

Thank God this backwoods, redneck, jesus freak lost! I'll take the Buck and Angle loss as a great victory! It is just so sad that soooo many people actually voted for these freaks.

Well, they might live in the backwoods but if they voted for Bennet they can't be rednecks 'cause their cards would be taken away. It means they keep up with events and actually think as opposed to Ken Buck supporters.

I heard one of my students, a 5th grader, start a list of why Ken Buck is cool. Its a weird thing for a little kid to say. my only response was to say that's a short list.

Yeah, I have a neighbor that fully indoctrinates his kids to his ultra-conservative philosophies. Certainly, I have influence on my kids but I also tell them that everyone needs to make up their own minds regarding politics. It is a personal decision that requires effort and education, things sorely lacking in political discourse today.

serves him right, Buck was so brazen as to say the race will not be a close one, implying he would stage a big victory.

As I turned on the election coverage Tuesday night I was fully aware that the Dems would lose big. My only hope was that Sharon Angle and Ken Buck would be defeated. They had to be two of the most extreme and offensive candidates I've seen run for office in a long time.
06:21 PM on 11/04/2010
I tuned in also and was hoping all the polls were wrong...but hey, two years is just around the corner. But my prayers were mostly for Sharon and Ken to be defeated...and they were!

There is a God and he is watching....two years = around the corner!!

Of all the Dems to win. Poor Setak and Feingold. Bennett is a corporate promoting, teacher bashing guy who is Arnie Duncan's hand pick to privatize public education. Want the Dems to keep majority but boy we are scrapping the bottom of the barrel with this guy.

You are so right....I was afraid that women wouldn't get out this year but in reading the Denver Post recap....women went for Bennet and men for Buck. Of course men's bodies and decisions about their own bodies were not an issue. We are so sick of the GOPers and baggers wanting every two years to turn this into a campaign against choice. This year they even went further and wanted to decide birth control for us.
04:54 PM on 11/04/2010
Ding ding ding! We have a winner! .... This was like the Nevada race, where a Tea Party/Republican made a very unimpressive Democrat seem like Lincoln and FDR. Thanks Tea Party.

Oh there's many of those. They started complaining about it days in advance. All the machines were 'rigged' to pre-select Reid.
When I first saw rumblings, I kept going to MSM sites for info on this.... and goodness they sure covered it up well (!) and only made that info available to a small, select group (all in the TP of course) because I could not find it.

Had the Republicans not made the collossal mistake of making Josh Penry''wait his turn'' they most probably would have run the table in Colorado. The circular firing squad of Maes,McGinnis, and Tancredo did just enough collateral damage for Dems to eke out the Bennet senate win along with some state legislature saves that leaves some semblance of balance.Thank you Dick Wadhams and you tea people for overplaying your hand.
