Olimpia, Mother Of 10-Year-Old Who Gave Birth, Is 'Happy'

10 Year Old

MADRID — A Romanian Gypsy woman whose 10-year-old daughter just gave birth in Spain says she's delighted to have a new granddaughter and doesn't understand why the birth has shocked anyone – let alone become an international sensation.

Spanish authorities have released few details about the case to protect the girl's privacy.

But in comments published Wednesday, her mother told reporters that the baby's father is a 13-year-old boy who is still in Romania and is no longer going out with her daughter.

The 10-year-old girl and her baby daughter plan to stay in Spain because the young couple separated, said the girl's mother. She identified herself only as Olimpia and appeared to be in her 30s but did not give her age.

She also said she didn't understand the attention the case was generating because she and her daughter are Romanian Gypsies, or Roma, and their custom is to allow girls to marry young even though that's against the law in Romania.

"That's the way we get married," the girl's mother told reporters Tuesday outside the modest apartment building in the southern town of Lebrija where the family lives.

Meanwhile, the story was going viral on the Internet and causing an uproar in Spain.

"Mother at 10 years old" blared a headline in Barcelona's La Vanguardia newspaper, which dedicated two pages to the story.

In contrast, news about the 10-year-old mother barely registered in Romania, where stories buried inside newspapers focused on the controversy the birth had caused among Spaniards.

The girl moved to Spain about three weeks ago, her mother said, and her baby was born in a hospital last week in the city of Jerez de la Frontera. There were no complications during the birth, and the 10-year-old and her baby are doing fine, her mother said.

"She's doing well and is very happy with her daughter," the woman said.

The 10-year-old and her baby are living with the new grandmother while Spanish social welfare authorities determine whether the family will be able to provide for the baby.

Leading daily El Pais and other Spanish news media said prosecutors had announced they would investigate whether the parents might be guilty of any negligence if the 10-year-old child was not registered for school or had not been taken to see a doctor in her final months of pregnancy.

No one was available at the prosecutors' office for comment on the matter late Wednesday.

"The case is shocking," said Maria Luisa Cava del Llano, Spain's ombudswoman.

Under Spanish law, having consensual sex with someone under age 13 is classified as child abuse. But a Justice Ministry official said this particular case is complicated, because the alleged father is not in Spain and is also a minor. It is not clear whether he could be charged, said the official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because of ministry policy.

Romanian law allows girls to get married at age 16 with parental consent, or at 18 without it.

But arranged "marriages" between teenagers are relatively common among Roma, who make up about 1.5 million of Romania's 22 million people. Families "marry off" daughters when they reach puberty, with the "husband" usually being a couple of years older. The marriages are not recognized by the state.

Roma girls are often not encouraged to pursue a full education, and Romanian authorities do not widely enforce education laws that require children to attend school until age 16.

In 2003, there was an international outcry after the European Union envoy to Romania, Baroness Emma Nicholson, demanded that a 12-year-old Roma girl and her 15-year-old common-law husband separate and cease all intimate relations until they were legally able to be married. The couple did separate for an unknown amount of time.

So sad that the mother of the 10 yr old has that attitude. She should be incarcerated for child abuse and child neglect. Her daughter is barely 10 and already gave birth, meaning she got pregnant at barely 9. WTF. A 9 yr old is not thinking about sex. The mother probably persuaded her child into having sex with that 12 yr old boy. I cant believe a mother would be ok with her CHILD having sex, the girl hasnt even reached puberty yet or adolescence.

I know gypsies way too well living in a town for years where 40% of the population were gypsies and trust me not only do 9 years old gypsy girls and boys think about copulation they do it like it's the most natural thing in the world. They are pathetic people hated everywhere in Europe for their uncivilized behavior. Out of control reproduction is a major gypsy feature.

What a nice, closed minded attitude!! This is part of their culture. Not everyone is like us. Should we also go after the bush-people in Africa and demand that they wear clothes so that their children aren't exposed to nakedness? Even though it isn't accepted by the government there, it's what these people have been doing for a long, long time. Just because we don't agree with it because it doesn't follow our social norms, doesn't mean that it is wrong.

This is such a sad and bizarre story, but at the same time, it's her life. Who knows how she genuinely feels, but it's not our place to judge.

I don't really remember my mentality when I was 10, but I don't think having sex topped my list of things I wanted to do

Well, if the girl turns out to be a good mother, then good for her.

The thing is this girl or any other girl giving birth at this age has no motherly instinct, because is still a child that is not yet fully aware of itself as an individual with responsibilities. The sense of responsibility comes in time, arround the age of full physical developpment. This girls has its childhood stollen, it will ignore at best the child just given birth. It will not be a guide for her kids, because has no education, experience and maturity to do so. This in turn will back fire, the child will lack parental love and care, it will grow up into a frustrated adult. This is one of the reasons the young gypsies are violent compared to the rest of younsters.

There were periods in history when girls were married and having children at 12 and somehow here we are, as a specie doing fairly well.

"..her mother told reporters that the baby's father is a 13-year-old boy who is still in Romania and is no longer going out with her daughter."

Going out? To where? Chucky Cheese? How do you say that in Romanian...?

Or how bout this....

I guess when youre a gypsy and cant afford a plastic doll, this is the only alternative....

Too harsh? Those were meant to remove the possibility of other people making those jokes and meaning them..Well now that I have your attention...

On a serious note, this has to be one of the worst human rights violations Ive heard of in a long time. Customary or not...no child should be subjected to marriage/child birth/rape regardless. No child is capable of making decisions such as these and truly understanding the consequences..This is really sickening to think that her mother finds this reprehensible act completely normal..No child can care for a child..

Just because the culture condones it does not mean it is a decent and civilized act, much like genital mutilation or rights of passage that require brutal and violent acts...

While I can't condone a situation like this I also can't degrade a way of life that is centuries old. Who are we to impose our beliefs on a culture that has survived for centuries?

i want to agree with you... but then i think about genital mutilation, the treatment of women in some Islamic cultures, 400-plus years of slavery in our own country- and the rampant discrimination that lingers in its wake, teenage and preteen girls taken as second/third/fourth wives to men many decades their senior, second-class citizenship in any nation... and i'm forced to conclude that because something has survived centuries does not necessarily make it right.
12:06 PM on 11/05/2010
Technically you are right, but...there is no culture to discuss here. There is major lack of judgment to become parent and be encouraged to do so at the age of 10. This is primitive instinct of survival, that's all. How do you see the solution if the gypsy population in question lives in your country, say USA? Does your legal system condones and accepts this? Makes an exception based on cultural and theological beliefs? I don't think so, all people that breathe and think consider normal to reproduce after the age of 18, when the individual has finished developing physically and has consent. What's really interesting is the similarity between European gypsies and the Indians and Pakistani people at the lowest level of existence. Not much has changed in 1000 years since their relocation, maybe the gypsies have lost the original mystical beliefs and now they have embraced the ones of the people they live with, in this case the majority of gypsies in Romania are Cristian Orthodox. While the poverty in those Asian countries is general and people have nowhere to go to escape from it, in Europe they have a chance, but they refuse it. It's easy to be a victim and have no responsibility.

There is another category of gypsies besides those poor, the rich ones, involved in crime. Their living standard is very high, exceeding the living standard of 90% of the romanian population. They drive the most luxurious cars "Made in Germany" and have no less than 3-4 cars per family. Think about 100k+ euros cars, full option Audi Q7, BMW series 7 and so on. They have houses that resemble the chinese pagodas and castles, with 30 bedrooms, but enlist for social protection at the city hall, since they have no official income. Right now the city halls are receiving the applications for heating subvention for people with income bellow a certain limit, and they are the first to apply. If they are refused, based on their apparent and visible assets' values (houses and cars), then is racism.

The romanian state is week, overwhelmed by corruption and incompetency of its politicians, by sterile political disputes among the politicians that pursue only one goal, political power through economical power. The budget money are simply leaked through "friendly" companies owned by politicians. All in all, the prospects are very bad and the gypsy population's condition is the least of the concerns for romanian government, but is big fuss in european community. It's not that the government doesn't want to help, the gypsies do not want to be helped, because it involves something that is frightening for them: WORK.

I bet you are sorry that there are no "Camps" for the Gypsies.
11:50 AM on 11/05/2010
I only presented some facts, it's your problem if that's all you understood from my post. Compared to other countries, Romania and its people have been very tolerant and sympathetic with the gypsy discrimination during the WW2. Only a small gypsy population has been sent to Russian gulag by Ion Antonescu, to quiet the Fuhrer in his rage and show his loyalty, but it was not that he really wanted it. Besides this, what i was not clear in my post, english is not mother tongue and by the name neither is yours, the gypsies have a chronic sickness when it comes to work. Very few of them work, not because they are discriminated, but because they don't want to try to change a little. It's their way of life being a parasite to a society, and you can understand this from their songs and teachings towards their children. They do not consider bad deeds if those deeds were oriented towards others than gypsies, that is normal.
12:10 PM on 11/05/2010
Sorry for the words, I meant "romanians have been tolerant and sympathetic with the gypsies during their discrimination in WW2".
08:44 AM on 11/05/2010
The gypsies are very prolific, averaging 8 children per family, with no prospects for raising them, while the rest of population is averaging 1.2 kids. It's not their concern how those kids will be raised and you have a typical example here. Their customs require to marry young, no age limits here, to secure family relations. There are cases where kids are married or "promised" before they are even born. How educational and healthy for a child's mind is to live with the idea that is "married" and the play buddy is actually the spouse? How psychologically healthy can be to have sex at 8-9 years old? I'm not a psychologist or psychiatrist here, but it can't be good. One social behavior is uncontrolled rage and violence, seen frequently at young male gypsies. There are also some reports of "rebellion" among the gypsy children that go to school and understand a little different the ancient customs. One case was in the media recently, when the 13 years old bride refused the groom because she did not like of love him, while the groom had its heart melted for another girl in the community, but it was willing to respect his father's wish to marry the girl, although weeping inside.

They have some kind of tribal "legal system", where oldest and respected members of their community assemble in a council and rule some cases of conflict in their community (it's called STABOR). Officially it's not recognized by romanian authorities.

I don't know about sex at 8-9, but I can say that if one is going to arrange a marriage for their child, it's probably best to arrange a marriage to another child, about the same age, and have them bond as they grow up together. Seems a lot easier for them to fall in love that way, making it much healthier for their marriage.

Their way of life is still in 1800, while the law enforcement in Romania lacks behind EU policies and is inefficient. Since romanian economy has major problems and the living cost is very high compared to the income, or in other words "there's nothing left to steal or beg from a poor population", a part of the gypsy population has fled the country for Italy and Spain, countries that welcomed immigrants for the last 6-8 years, under the pretense of racism and discrimination. The government pays a monthly allowance for any child until the age of 18, small indeed - 10 euros, also pays a monthly allowance to the mother until the child is 2 years old, which is 85% of the average salary for the last 6 months of employment, limited to a maximum 1000 euros, or a fixed amount of 150euro if there was no employment. What else can the government do? By the age of 18, a gypsy girl can have as many as 3 kids and gets 160-170-180 euros each month. It's not a lot of money, but the thing is that those money will never be payed back to the system by the mother or by the father, because they will never work and pay taxes. The responsibility to pay those money falls on the shoulders of the rest of romanian taxpayers.

...from place to place and living by the good will of the communities they visited. Also the romanian society has seen them as sub-humans and the feeling has perpetuated since then. But now, 150 years later, their feeling is a constant grudge against the romanian population that once had them as slaves. The fact that romanians only received them as slaves from the migrators that passed through their lands is a minor detail overlooked by a population with no education.

The Gypsy community in Romania is the most irresponsible population from the civilized world, if we consider Romania as part of civilized world. It lives "around" the romanian society, inside or among the romanian society if is for its benefit (social protection, health care, etc, although none of the gypsies or barely few report income, contribute to health care, pension, or do any kind of lucrative activity), and outside the society if it's about abiding the law, that's discrimination and racism. It's a very convenient position, "I respect the law if it's in my advantage, if it's forbidding something, I don't like it, I'm discriminated". This happens for 150 years, since the gypsies where released from slavery in 1856-1864. The romanian laws are the same as any laws in EU, in fact they are aligned more thoroughly with the EU laws since Romania has become full EU member. Nonetheless, for gypsies this is irrelevant.

To understand the situation is not easy at all.
I'm concerned for the confusion that the name ROMA can create for a person that doesn't know anything about this ethnic group. Has nothing to do with ROMANIA and ROMANIANS, that extract their roots from ancient ROMAN empire that has conquered the ancient country named DACIA, inhabited by DACIANS, a group of ancient TRACIANS from the Balcanic peninsula. The gypsies come from today's INDIA and PAKISTAN, brought to Europe as slaves by barbaric and nomadic people from Asia, the last of them being the TARTARS in the 14th century. Most of those migrators have been defeated by the romanian population that actually defended the entire Europe. Today's western Europe would have looked a lot different if the romanians would have just stayed hidden to wait for the migration waves to pass. The OTOMAN empire (turkish) has also brought them to romanian principalities during the period of semi-occupation in the 17-18-th centuries. Usually they were owned by land lords and churches, yes, the church had slaves. They were treated well, mostly as people that cannot leave their owner and village, but their exploitation was hardly what the african slaves in US has suffered. They never have been hard workers, but mostly good at hand-crafting and music. After their emancipation and release from slavery in the 1856-1864, they never considered to integrate and become full members of the communities where they lived, preferring to pose in victims..
