Explore the city's ethnic cuisine through different takes on the quintessential to-go meal: Vietnamese banh-mi, Italian meatball subs, French dips, and Cuban pressed sandwiches. There used to be an incredible sandwich shop in Pasadena, on Colorado near Lake. All of the sandwiches were named after celebrities. It is no longer around. Does anybody remember the name of the place?

Bay Cities is the Westside favorite but as we all know, when Angelinos like something it becomes a scene. Bay Cities has been crowded for decades. However, now it is just ridiculous. Yeah, you can email/fax your order in but how about spontaneity? Don't go there between the hours of 11-2 if you are in a time crunch. You will have to wait for 20 numbers to pass.
My new fave Westside joint is Sorrento in Culver City. Half the price and double the old school Italian market flavor. Check it out but don't spread the word!!! Yeah right...

Bay Cities is so popular because it is AWESOME. I really like the Godmother, but all of their sandwiches are fantastic!

I've lived in five major cities and when a food establishment or even taco stand shines above the usual fanfare it becomes a "scene". LA is no different than Chicago, LA, New York, Miami, or Boston. I can't speak for any other sizable cities but I'm sure their herds go in numbers where the grazing is great.

Good point. I guess I'm not a fan of long lines when my stomach is grumbling and I have to look at an isle of food behind a glass wall.

Yo managed to completely miss all the great sandwich shops in San Pedro: Pavich's roast pork on somun bread, Busy Bee Market's BBQ chicken, A-1 Market's meatball, Sorrento's meatball, the whole menu over at Sandwich Saloon, the new kids on the block over at Beach City Market with their Cuban Sandwich, etc...

I was just about to post this. It's as if the South Bay, Pedro specifically, wasn't even taken into account. That Pastrami sandwich they had on the list looked ghastly when compared to the one I've had at Busy Bee. And the BBQ Chicken sandwich is to die for.

Southbay...what about the SFV...can't bring your westside snobby @zzes north of Ventura Blvd for a Sandwich?

Uh...Giamela's maybe for starters! You can do the rest of the work yourselves!

Where the hell is the Langer's #19?

I've had various items from Oinkster and overall I think their food is pretty good but Langer's pastrami and rye bread blows Oinkster's pastrami sandwich offering clear out of the water.

What about Subway? If you buy the combo, they'll give you a Coke and a bag of Doritos with your sandwich. Pretty sweet if you ask me.

Great deal, but lacking on the quality when compared to the 18 sandwiches above.

And don't forget, it will be the same as at any of the hundreds of Subways, greasy, tasteless, and frankly scary. (but you already knew that, you little teaser).

What do goyem know? What is Langer's, chopped liver? Canter's? You should only drop dead and come back as a chandelier so that you can burn by day and hang by night! A shunda for the neighbors.

Pulled pork sandwich from Oinkster is good to.

Yup Langer's shoulda been included AND it's easy to get to-right by Metro Red line.
02:10 AM on 11/04/2010
Any list of the best Los Angeles sandwiches that doesn't include Langer's is not to be taken seriously.

Or at least one of the many sandwich shops in San Pedro. Sandwich Salon and Busy Bee make amazing sandwiches that weren't even mentioned on this list.

Bay Cities Deli is the only reason to live in this god-forsaken city, I swear. You have to order their sandwiches an hour prior, online-only :D
