'127 Hours' Causes Fainting, Vomiting, Seizures

127 Hours

'127 Hours' has gotten audiences fainting, vomiting and worse in numbers unseen since 'The Exorcist' - and the movie has not even hit theaters yet.

James Franco plays real-life rock climber Aron Ralston who made headlines when he resorted to self-amputation to free himself from a boulder that pinned his arm to a canyon wall for five days in 2003.

The scene has caused viewers numerous physical reactions, and Movieline.com has put together a time line. Here's what happened at just one screening:

Oct. 28 - London Film Festival
A report in The Sun claimed that "[h]orrified film fans threw up and fainted at the premiere of Slumdog Millionaire director Danny Boyle's shocking new movie," which closed the London Film Festival last week. The bad news: As you might expect from The Sun, the specific number and nature of the cases was not determined. There is this, though: "Boyle looked on as paramedics treated fans struggling to cope with gruesome scenes." And the person sitting near Daily Mail reviewer Chris Tookey "left just after the most gruesome bit and never came back," apparently rebuking "the most harrowing bone-breaking and amputation scene in the history of cinema."

Read more here. The movie opens Friday.

I suffered a major concussion after fainting during this movie. Pictures: http://www.facebook.com/photo.php?pid=32950241&l=6b39bcd9b3&id=42001951

I am only now putting the memories together of what happened.

I am very concerned that there will be arm amputee copycats.

OK - I just saw the movie and a dude had a seizure right after he cut off his arm. The movie was stopped. Does anyone know what happened after that? We did get a free movie coupon!

Furthermore, wasn't his arm completely deadened, the nerves having been crushed for hours? Did he really feel much of it? Not sure I want to know.

According to Amber Tamblyn, who stars in the film, this is all a bunch of hogwash. She blogged...

In Regards to the fainting and all.

I wanted to post something today in response to such bogus articles as this one about 127 HOURS.

While the film does have a gruesome arm cutting off scene, I wanted to let everyone know that this is merely 3 minutes of the film. 127 HOURS is a film about a man who cuts off his own arm to survive, yes, but the film is not about cutting off an arm. There is a difference. If you are squeamish, look down during that part. But don't miss the opportunity to see this film because bloggers and others are exaggerating what has happened at the screenings to make it seem like this is the 15th installment of the Saw franchise. It couldn't be any further from that.

For example, At the premiere in Los Angeles the other night, there were reports that a woman had a seizure in the audience. This is true, but the seizure came a mere 20 minutes into the film and was caused by diabetic shock. So to state that "People are having seizures and passing out because of the film" is just not true.

It's a beautiful film and a triumphant story that will leave you breathless and in tears. Happy tears! Trust me.

I really hope I'll be able to watch the amputation scene since I really want to see this film. I recently saw Attack on Darfur on dvd and it was really hard to watch. It was so heartbreaking, knowing that the violence shown on screen is actually going on in real life. I'm really glad I watched it though because it had a good humanitarian message that more people need to become aware of. http://www.blockbuster.com/browse/catalog/movieDetails/492994

FFS--the arm scene is 3 minutes and the woman who passed out did so 30 minutes into the movie because she's a diabetic. Does anyone miss actual reporting? Yanno, like factual and relevant stuff? It's a moving, gorgeous film with 3 minutes of a frightening reality a young man lived through.

Ha, I suspect it's the same people that passed out when we dissected frogs and rats in bio class.

A staggering achievement in the annals of attempting to get the general public to pay for a movie whose core fan audience of amputation and torture fans would hardly fill even the tiniest of art movie proyection rooms. On the other hand it may turn out unexpectedly to be a wildly popular hit among the ranks of bulimics and interrogation specialists.
