Bear vs. Bison: Alex Wypyszinski Snaps Photos Of Rare Hunt On Yellowstone National Park Road (VIDEO)

First Posted: 11/04/10 09:14 AM ET Updated: 05/25/11 07:10 PM ET

Alex Wypyzinski was in for a surprise while driving down an empty highway in Yellowstone National Park. Upon hearing a loud noise that he thought "was a horse and carriage," Wypyzinski peeked in his rear-view mirror to spot two brown blurs darting down the highway, which he initially took to be moose.

As the sprinting animals got closer, Wypyzinski realized the commotion was a much rarer sight: a grizzly bear hunting a bison. Instead of getting out of the way, he grabbed his camera to capture the stunning photos seen in this video from CNN.

The bison was covered in burn wounds, likely from a local hot spring. Find out what happens in this incredible video.

all the wall street and midterm elections metaphors in the comments are clever. comments on the same story on a right-wing site would consist of glorification of hunting & guns and perhaps the usual mental violence of transposing &wishing the fate of the bison on some public figure they dislike

Hey, that looked like Abe Foxman running down the road. Did he get away?

I remember seeing a burned dear carcus next to Old Faithful when I went to Yellowstone about 4 years ago. Animals are stupid.
09:38 AM on 11/07/2010
So are humans. Every so often someone gets gored by a bison or badly burned in one of Yellowstone's thermal features, despite the warnings you get when you enter the park. At least animals have the excuse of not being able to read.

Damn park rangers! With a little heart and imagination- they could have taken the anlmal to a rescue. That the poor beast won a race for his life one day only to be "put down" the next, shows a pretty sorry end of the story.

I thought the same thing. It outdid the bear. It couldn't survive?

With burns like that? There's no way it would have been better off to survive. Quick and clean is the only humane option.

How did the Bison get burned? I understand it's a natural phenomena - just don't understand what it is.
09:26 PM on 11/06/2010
Probably got caught in one of the hot springs; those things can get scalding! I believe the video mentioned something about hot springs, too...

On a lighter note check out this video. It's unbelievable. A grateful rehabilitated lion hugging the woman who rescued him when she found him injured.

thanks. I couldn't watch the bison and the bear. I abhor violence. If it was just chasing it fine. But from what I've read, it caught it. I know it's the nature of the beast but I don't have to watch it.

From what you read where???? Do you abhor violence so much that the mere suggestion of it makes your eyes hallucinate completely new endings to news stories? There is no mention anywhere on this page that the bear caught the moose, as a matter of fact the moose escaped, and there isn't a drop of blood in the video, Live a little Brenda.

There's no way this is real. Bears cannot run that fast.

I think we are being taken by right wing hunting enthusiast. They like to play up nature as being more brutal than man, to justify their hunting of animals as being "more humane" that what nature does. Hunting should be banned and the park rangers that shot this Bison should be fired.
