Pelosi To Run For Minority Leader [UPDATED]

Nancy Pelosi

WASHINGTON -- House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) will make a bid to be Democratic minority leader, she announced Friday via Twitter. "Driven by the urgency of creating jobs & protecting #hcr, #wsr, Social Security & Medicare, I am running for Dem Leader," she tweeted.

Pelosi has a broad base of support and her deputy, Rep. Steny Hoyer (D-Md.), saw much of his base of conservative Democrats wiped out on Tuesday. Hoyer has said previously that he would not challenge Pelosi if she decided to stay. For weeks, the national media have assumed, without evidence, that Pelosi would step down if Democrats lost the House.

Hoyer, Pelosi's second in command, will not challenge Pelosi for the top job but is considering a bid for minority whip. That clears the field for Pelosi, making her the presumptive minority leader.

"Hoyer has received a lot of support from members over the past several days urging him to stay as a part of leadership. He'll spend the next couple of days talking to members and getting their thoughts on him being minority whip," Hoyer spokeswoman Katie Grant told HuffPost.

If he decides to run, he'll face a challenge from the current number-three Democrat, Rep. James Clyburn of South Carolina, who is the majority whip. Clyburn declared his intention to run for the number two spot in a letter to Democratic colleagues Friday. Reps. John Larson (D-Conn.) and Xavier Becerra (D-Calif.) announced bids for the three and four spots, positions they currently hold, and have yet to be challenged.

Before she announced her bid, Democratic activists had begun a public campaign to persuade Pelosi, arguably the most progressive speaker in House history, to stay, with Americans United for Change thanking her for what she accomplished at thankyouspeakerpelosi.com. They have an ally in the House GOP, which also says it would like her to stay, but for the opposite reason. "The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again, and expecting a different result. Of course, if House Democrats are willing to sacrifice more of their members in 2012 for the glory of Nancy Pelosi, we are happy to oblige them," said Ken Spain, spokesman for the campaign arm of House Republicans.

Conservative Democrat Dan Boren of Oklahoma and Rep. Albio Sires of New Jersey, a member of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee's leadership, announced publicly they would not support Pelosi for leader. DailyKos, meanwhile, is gathering support for a bid by Pelosi to remain Democratic leader. It is only the third petition the site has ever done.

MoveOn.org is also gathering support for Pelosi, asking members to call, Facebook or tweet: "RT @MoveOn: I want @SpeakerPelosi to lead Democrats in the new Congress. RT if you agree."

ORIGINAL STORY:

WASHINGTON -- House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) is canvassing members of the Democratic caucus before deciding whether to make a bid for House minority leader, she told The Huffington Post in an interview Thursday. Though Pelosi has yet to reach and ask for support, she said, calls and emails of encouragement have come from House colleagues and members of the progressive community.

"I've gotten a positive response," said Pelosi, adding that she was "very encouraged and complimented" by her colleagues' reactions. "Of course, the ones you will hear from are the ones who want you to run ... Everything is very positive in what they say, complimentary about how I've kept the caucus together, complimentary about the fact that we won in the first place [in 2006] and increased our numbers [in 2008] and that we have to come right back in that regard. But I'll be very honest with you, it hasn't been something I've -- maybe tonight when I get home and after everybody goes to sleep and start reading the memos and calling people if it's not too late -- or at least I can call the west coast, then I'll have more of an appraisal of it."

Pelosi is still widely popular with the Democratic caucus, given credit for taking the House back from the GOP in 2006 and for using the gavel to push through as ambitious an agenda as any speaker in congressional history.

Conservative Democrat Heath Shuler (D-N.C.) has floated the prospect of challenging Pelosi for minority leader, but he is taken about as seriously by his Democratic colleagues as he was by secondaries when he was a bad quarterback in the National Football League.

Pelosi said that she was still focused on the remaining races that remain undecided and wouldn't make a decision until the verdicts are in. "We're still in the fray to a certain extent, and I have to keep my attention on that rather than on [my future], because that is time sensitive," she said. "Then I'll go to the next step. But I'm very encouraged and complimented by ... all of those people, whether it's emails or messages or whatever, it's encouraging."

Election Day, however, was a "very sad day for us," Pelosi said.

In her estimation, the jobless problem swamped their accomplishments. "We believe that there's a big distinction between Democrats and Republicans, but nine and a half percent unemployment is just such an eclipsing phenomenon that no message really can come through unless it's a message that says, 'Here's your job,'" she said. "From our standpoint, we have saved the country from eight and a half million jobs lost, from 14 and a half percent unemployment and the rest. But you don't get any credit for what you prevented from happening."

She warned Republicans not to think of the election as a validation of ideas that voters rejected in 2008. "The election was no ringing endorsement of Republicans," Pelosi said. "We do not accept their version of what this election means. It's not about rejecting what President Obama has done. It didn't go fast enough to create jobs. That's what it's about."

Pelosi is still House speaker until the 112th Congress is sworn in in January. While she still has the gavel, she said, she'll work to pass tax cuts for income under $250,000. She said she spoke to the president on Wednesday after his press conference and that he was clear that he did not support extending them for those at the top. Her second priority, she said, is to approve a $250 payment for Social Security recipients who did not get a cost-of-living adjustment for the second straight year. She also hoped to pass child nutrition and food safety legislation, depending on what the Senate could accomplish, she said. A food safety bill has been stuck on the Senate side for months.

As far as Nancy Pelosi, I don't care what she thinks she has done. When you do one thing that isn't right, like laughing about the unemployed when we needed Tier 5 way back in May. Then she put the brakes on legislation until 11/15 and arrogantly says: No Extension. Then it is followed by words from people of hopelessness. I don't forget. I guess people want punishment wanting her back. We already are being punished by the Republicans holding all of us hostage. Every job interview you go on is a negative experience. These places know they got you in a choke hold and will criticize your entire life, mostly because they haven't done as well, but have the upper hand to humiliate people going through this because you go for a lesser job. Our President doesn't seem to be in tune with the people. I don't know what is going on with these people in office but I hate the fact the Republicans got in. Look what they are doing already. They are holding us hostage again. Nancy Pelosi - Who Cares?

"....driven by the urgency to create jobs." I would think as the majority leader she would have been in a better position to solve problems, but she chose not to act then. Why now????
With a 26% approval rate, I can see why she might feel a bit slighted. Three out of four don't like her. 53% REALLY don't like her. She is almost up to the disapproval rate of her boss.

Considering the GOP spent so much on attach ads against Nancy Pelosi, I'd say she must be doing something right! She's a fighter and someone Dems cannot afford to lose!

You go Nancy! The Republicans got a nerve telling the Democrats what they should do, they'd better come up with how they are going to decrease unemployment and reduce the deficit. Hold on America, this is going to be an interesting ride.

It's the same as the Republicans keeping old farts like Mitch McConnell around. The worst thing the Democrats can do is keep Washington dinosaurs around, especially dinosaurs with sub-10% approval ratings. This is the ultimate holiday gift to the Republicans. They are hoping against hope that the Democrats put her back in a visible leadership position. The left may like her, but she and Reid will not be able to turn a single independent back to the Democrats.

wow nothing changed : a woman is always a threat to bigoted men worse if she holds a position of power" off with her head". She did a great job and was much better of many of her fellow democrats who now feel threatened by her and would love to put her in an obscure job. We need fighter like her and we need the president to start fighting too. " enough of mr nice Mr president these people are out to get rid of you from day one you can not work with or trust them gloves should be off".

Its not because shes a woman. I don't feel Nacy should be our minority leader anymore because she is always trying to work with the Republicans. Working with the Republicans is not going to get our economy back together and the Dems back in the house. Nacy and the Dems spent to much time on health care when jobs were being lost. They had the votes to pass Health care but Nacy and Reid decided to take their sweet time to work and please the Republicans while jobs were being lost. Its not because shes a woman, its because shes spending to much free time working with the Republicans and trying to please them. I think the Dems need someone else other than Nancy to represent them because we can't offord to work with the Republicans anymore. If Nancy and Reid keep going our econonmy will be in the ditch. We cannot afford this no longer. If the Dems want there seats back choose somebody else besides Nancy Pelosi and stay on point. On point meaning jobs, jobs, and more jobs. Thats on point. If you think Nancy should work with the Republicans ask yourself this question: When the Republicans took control during The Bush Era did they ever try to compromise and work with us Democracts or did they not? No. The Republicans did not want to work with us period. Remember that. They will not work with the Dems s why are we bothering?

If Pelosi leaves her leadership position, Republicans win. They have been demonizing her since she became Speaker. She is not responsible for Dem losses. I understand a bunch of Blue Dogs lost. Maybe that is not all bad if Dems can run some better candidates in the next election cycle. The problem is that with the loss of the BDs we lost the agenda. Now we have to deal with the right wing agenda. I hope the libs that stayed home are satisfied.

If Nancy "Typhoid" Pelosi is the answer to liberal Democrats' dream for a minority leader, perhaps she's also the answer as Obama's replacement in 2012.

Now is not the time for democrats to go backwards. We did not push our agenda enough. When republicans lost big, they did not change and try to help America. They became the party of no. We need to protect health care and expand it, fix the economy by creating more jobs and protect social security and medicare and give back the cost of living. We need to cut the tax cuts for the very rich and the wealthy billionaires and the billion dollar small businesses and keep those for small and middle class. Create jobs and not give in to the party of no.

After Tuesday's elections, to save the White House from the GOP cretins in 2012, this empty suit who looks more like Jimmy Carter, is already weak and cannot negotiate with the extremes from a rapidly shrinking moderate base. He's lost whatever he gained in 2008 from Independents.

The Democratic Party cannot afford to present itself as a warmed over alternative to MODERATE REPUBLICANISM.

Obama has only one house of Congress which the Democrats will barely be holding. He won't have the stimulus money HE NEEDS to get this economy moving because the Republican House won't approve it. Obama will have to extend ALL tax cuts for at least a year or so, so he immediately loses liberal and a good part of his moderate base.

Obama's best course of action is to declare soon, he will not be a candidate for re-election. To permit other promising Democrats to replace him without having to challenge him for the nomination. Running the risk of splitting the fragile base into smithereens.

With that in mind,Democrats need to start looking NOW to either Jesse Jackson Jr., Diane Feinstein Barbara Boxer, former Senator Russ Feingold, or best of all choices as a national unifying figure: GENERAL DAVID PETRAEUS. There are many more excellent prospects.

Democrats must regain the initiative and quickly. I fear they can't do it by holding on to Obama's coattails. He's got to go

Should Speaker Nancy Pelosi pursue her options as did Speaker Sam Rayburn and Speaker Joseph Martin? Lets look at 2 examples covering Speaker, Majority and Minority leadership between 1937 (75th Congress) and 1961 (87th Congress).

Sam Rayburn was in the Democratic House Leadership from 1937 to 1961 spanning 13 Congresses. He was Speaker of the House 3 separate times (a total of 18 years), Majority leader once ( 4 years) and Minority Leader twice ( 4 years).

Joseph Martin was in the Republican House leadership from 1941 to 1959 spanning 9 Congresses. He was speaker of the House 2 separate time (a total of 4 years) and Minority leader three separate times spanning a period of 14 years. He was never majority leader.

If Speaker Pelosi becomes Minority leader she will not be breaking new ground. As seen above it has been done by both political parties on a number of occasions. This is not for or against a Pelosi objective but rather to point out that going from Speaker to Minority leader is not new.
