Robert Gates: Repeal 'Don't Ask, Don't Tell' Now, Before GOP Takes Control Of Congress

ANNE GEARAN   11/ 7/10 10:45 AM ET   AP

Robert Gates

MELBOURNE, Australia — U.S. Defense Secretary Robert Gates said Congress should act quickly, before new members take their seats, to repeal the military's ban on gays serving openly in the military.

He, however, did not sound optimistic that the current Congress would use a brief postelection session to get rid of the law known as "don't ask, don't tell."

"I would like to see the repeal of "don't ask, don't tell" but I'm not sure what the prospects for that are," Gates said Saturday, as he traveled to defense and diplomatic meetings in Australia.

Unless the lame-duck Congress acts, the repeal effort is considered dead for now.

The current, Democratic-controlled Congress has not acted to lift the ban, which President Barack Obama promised to eliminate. In his postelection news conference Wednesday, Obama said there would be time to repeal the ban in December or early January, after the military completes a study of the effects of repeal on the front lines and at home.

With Republicans taking control of the House in January, and with larger margins in the Senate, supporters of lifting the ban predict it will be much more difficult.

Gates also urged the Senate to ratify a stalled arms control treaty with Russia before the end of the current legislative session in January.

The defense chief said the huge midterm gains for Republicans will not set back Obama's strategy for the war in Afghanistan. Obama wants to begin pulling U.S. forces home next summer, so long as security conditions allow it.

Many Republicans oppose the withdrawal plan, saying it is driven by politics and encourages the Taliban to wait out U.S. forces.

"Partly I think things will depend on our assessment next spring and early summer of how we're doing," Gates said. "I think that will have the biggest impact on the president's decision in terms of the pacing."

The House Armed Services Committee plans hearings about the war this spring, incoming committee chairman Rep. Howard "Buck" McKeon said last week. Republicans generally support Obama's war plan, which combines a troop buildup with counterinsurgency and couunterterror tactics. Their only real complaint has been the announcement that withdrawal would begin in July 2011.

McKeon plans to summon commanding Gen. David Petraeus, who has finessed his early unease with the withdrawal plan. Petraeus has said he will give Obama his straight advice about whether a withdrawal is advisable, and military officials say they expect him to recommend modest pullbacks from areas considered relatively safe.

Such hearings would raise the pressure on Obama if he is planning a large withdrawal or if the spring brings erosion of the small military gains U.S. and NATO forces have made in recent months.

"We've talked all along about the withdrawals in July being conditions-based, in terms of the numbers," that would leave, Gates said. "I think that continues to be the position. It'll be based more on that than on domestic politics."

Marine Commandant Amos says don't repeal one day and his superior says do repeal the next while, presumably, the CJC agrees. Who's in charge? Well, some will say Obama as Commander in Chief and that he's abdicating responsibility, but we all know that's not true either. It's Congress' responsibility and it's Congress that is abdicating. The recent election isn't helpful in that regard. What a mess, and all because of homophobic myopia.

Well that would require the democrats to stand up to the republican bullies. So sorry gays you will need to remain 2nd class citizens for a while longer.

I don't understand why DADT is sickening. I agree with the initial premise. I won't ask and you don't have to tell me. Simple. The part that needs to be taken out is being chaptered out for being gay. If you are gay, you should be able to serve, no problem. Just understand the cost of being openly gay. If you want to be openly gay understand the problems you will face in certain MOS like Infantry.

Gates, Obama Urge Repeal of Military's Gay Ban
Defense Secretary Robert Gates is encouraging Congress to act before year's end to repeal the ban on gays serving openly in the military. That goal, however, lacks the backing of Marine Corps Commandant James Amos. http://www.newslook.com/videos/264320-gates-obama-urge-repeal-of-military-s-gay-ban?autoplay=true

It's good to see someone is trying to save the U.S. military which is in such a devastated state thanks to the DADT witch-hunts.

F&F. The armed forces HAVE been harmed, not helped by DADT. Many of the individuals dischrged under DADT are highly trained individuals, such as translators. Are we now to point where we ca do away with translators? I wasn't aware the whole world spoke only English. The country is shooting itself in the foot and wasting taxpayer money by discharging people under DADT. That's beyond the point that there is no sane reason in this day and age to persecute GLBT service people.

Hopefully people will not paint Dems with a broad brush. Some people believe that people should be who they are without ever having to hide it. Some also believe that our military are asked to sacrifice so much, so why are we asking them to sacrifice their own happiness. We need to stop pointing fingers at the left and the right and work together to get the rights that a community has been so deserving.

Yes just like President Obama is, like he said he would from the beginning...work with Congress and the Pentagon, which he is doing and staying the course. He made a commitment to the Pentagon to wait for a report Dec.1, 2010 before proceeding any further.

So far nothing has been decided, and there is more than one way to skin a cat. If this avenue does not pan out due to no Republican support then you choose another avenue until you are left with only one option.

The main issue is and always should be ending DADT regardless of how fast or the means as long as long as it gets done in Obama's first term.

Open to readers,

A fifteen year old law...go after the Republicans, they are the deciding vote here people, your anger is misdirected. Don't continue to give Republicans a pass for not doing their job. Remember they have listened to the "American People" they know what you want...so "on behalf of the Amercian People" ask them to deliver on their promise for a change...

"I take issue... Obama--"DON'T ASK-DON'T TELL"-- not that SIMPLE...

"I've read and then I LISTENED to President Obama, during a TOWNHALL, and I must say that his explanation as to WHY he WON'T END it with just a STROKE of his GOLDEN "Commander-and-Chief" PEN, was as follows:

In short, Congress...CONGRESS PASSED A LAW forbidding Presidents from acting UNILATERALLY ! NOW...

1st--He had to ACCOMPLISH what NO OTHER PRESIDENT has (ie) He GOT the DEFENSE Secretary, the CHAIRMANS of the Joint Chiefs, to ALL agree that DADT should be totally ABOLISHED! ...and, for the FIRST TIME EVER they ALL testified, PUBLICLY, on the RECORD, exactly that! HUGE hurdle!!

...he continued, BY TICKING OFF all the other major hurdles (ie) that MILITARY Conclusion Report due in December. The President's ultimate GOAL is to write an"insulated" Bill, with the ULTIMATE GOAL of passing a LAW that can ONLY BE OVERTURNED by a future MAJORITY in Congress. And, like OTHER civil rights law, it'll never be OVERTURNED once it on the books, and PROVEN to be SUCCESSFUL!!

...he concluded by explaning that IF HE WERE TO change the law by 'EXCUTIVE ORDER', it is the prorogative of ANY (Repubican) future President to overturn any Executive Order-- BY Executive Order!

So, TAKE HEART!

PRESIDENT Obama "PROMISE" that DADT will be strucked down in HIS FIRST TERM, and I BELIEVE him! So, consider it as GOOD AS DEAD...the only choice will be BURIAL or CREMATION?!"”

Then he did nothing for a year spending all his political capital on others issues.

He then promised he'd do it in 2010 (not his first term) and laid out a "plan" .. a plan that is now shot to h3ll due to his dithering.

Levin is now in talks with McCain on how to remove DADT from the defense bill.

The courts struck down DADT, and Obama's DoJ started an appeal and even asked that the law be reinstated through the appeal process, and is out there making arguments using the states right to prevent incestuous marriages as an argument against equal marriage for gays.

His address after the election didn't provide any hope that he was going to pursue the issues during the lame duck session.

Gates specifically said it was not likely it would happen this year.

So, the only legislative chance gays had is not blown, and he's out there actively "blowing" any judicial or executive chance as well.

Walk up please. Your hero is a fake.

What a hypocrite. Gates closed the gate on the repeal of DADT long ago.

In the Advcate.com, August 2010. is an article on how Gates had slow walked the DADT issue, and told Obama to put the skids on it.

I don't get it. Everyone close to the military (and a bunch of people IN the military) says this act needs to be repealed. And yet congress is stalling. This is the time for leadership. The person that gets this done may lose some in the next election, but eventually that'll pay off.

It will pay off almost instantly with a stronger more intelligent and flexible military force.
04:32 PM on 11/08/2010
I'm talking about political payoff. Chances are, anyone who champions this cause will likely spend some political clout on it. But with gays becoming a more and more powerful and vocal minority, they will eventually be able to ride that momentum.

I understand that LGBT overwhelmingly voted for GOP/the party that fillbustered DADT recently. Do they think the GOP will maybe run allitle faster than Obama on this issue? I mean, I dont understand why they would vote for a party that wants to lynch them.

Let me be the first to fan you 'maush74' - I've been wondering the same thing... 31% of my gay/lesbian community chose to make a protest vote for the Repugs who say 'NO YOU CAN'T' be seen & recognized as a 'normal' and 'equal' and 'deserving'  American citizen... "you must sit at the back of the bus and drink from that water fountain."  The dumb choice they made on Nov 2nd is going to effect (badly) 35 million gays & lesbians in the long run.

Wrong. "31% of my gay/lesbian community chose to make a protest vote for the Repugs" is simply not based in fact. Reread the article where you grabbed the 31% number.

Wrong wrong wrong.

IF OBAMA FAILS TO UNDERSTAND "WHY" DEMOCRATS LOST THE MIDTERMS, HE WILL BE PERSONALLY RESPONSIBLE FOR "GIVING" AMERICA BACK TO THE REPUBLICANS

In comparing the voter demographics/the statistics from the 2008 and 2010 election results, one immutable numerical fact is glaringly CLEAR/UNDENIABLE. Democrats CAN’T WIN without the full support of liberals and progressives.

In other words, Obama and Democrats are GUARANTEED LOSERS without the full support of liberals and progressives.

To those who are claiming that the PROFESSIONAL LEFT is done for, why is it that liberals and progressives have MORE political leverage today than they had Monday?

For Obama to continue to DENY/IGNORE that fact and continue to compromise away the VALUES of liberals and progressives is a LOSE/LOSE proposition for Obama and Democrats!

Explain to me what voter block is going to replace the liberals and progressives who got Obama and Democrats elected in 2008 in Obama's 2012 reelection if he doesn't win back their full support. Establishment Republicans? Blue Dog Dems? Teabaggers? Right-leaning Independents?
The further Obama moves to the right the further he erodes his base and left-leaning independents. Right leaning-Independents only call themselves Independents...but they always will vote for the Republican.

Until America can make progress on the smaller issues the larger issues will never be adequately addressed and solved to avoid the looming catastrophe that awaits the nation. We have wasted countless time, money, effort and energy in this country on non-issues form the "War on Drugs" to abortion to Gay marriage to this.

I do find it interesting (and nerve-racking) that instead of staying in the UN-tied States and dealing with DADT and other pressing issues, that he's off to India to 'make friends' with the Indians. Normally I like reaching out diplomatically to foreign nations in peace but right now seems to me Obama should be facing & dealing & and somehow creating 'peace' in our own country. He leaves us all stewing & brewing, while he sips tea in a foreign land.

He is dealing with DADT, like he said he would from the beginning, through Congress and Pentagon, he is waiting for a report out December 1st, a commitment he made to the Pentagon before proceeding further.

What do you think a President's job entails? There's always someone stewing and brewing...
