National Geographic Traveler's List Of 18 Unspoiled Coasts Around The World (PHOTOS)

First Posted: 11/08/10 03:07 PM ET   Updated: 09/20/11 12:08 PM ET

One of our favorite travel magazines, National Geographic Traveler, published their list of the 99 coasts around the world that are "top-rated" (in excellent condition and relatively unspoiled), "doing well" (a few problems), "in the balance" (a risky future ahead), "facing trouble," "in trouble," and "near catastrophic."

In total, the list includes a mix of some of the most heavily trafficked and most remote coasts in the world.

Take a look at the 18 "top-rated" coasts in the world. Hopefully these coasts are not in danger of going anywhere anytime soon.

New Zealand features 2 times on this list (Cook Islands almost counts as a 3rd). Where my parents live in the South Island of New Zealand there is a 2 mile long beach near their farm. Its my favourite beach in the world and its stunning. I've been there hundreds of times and only on one occasion were there some other people there and they were just a group of surfers. We are very spoilt in this country. Having a whole beach to yourself is what we are used to and its what we love about living here.

Would've liked to see Mexico's Pacific Coast in Oaxaca on here.

The beaches of the South Shore of Nova Scotia, especially in Queens and Shelburne Counties, are almost innumerable. Many are hidden from view and completely unspoiled. The endangered Piping Plover nests on many of our white sand beaches and you can always find an empty stretch of sand even in the height of summer. Being in the "banana belt" of Nova Scotia, you can also easily enjoy the unspoiled beauty in the middle of winter. (Although swimming in January isn't entirely recommended!).

Thankfully, there are many other unspoiled coasts not listed that could have been. I agree with the inclusions of Nova Scotia's south shore, PEI red sand beaches, and the Burin Penninsula of Newfoundland. Also worth visiting in that part of the world would be the previously mentioned Cape Breton Island, the cliffs on the west side of Grand Manan Island and the beaches and cliffs of the Magdalen Islands.

Big Sur has a totally unspoiled magnificent coastline......The credibility of this article is seriously damaged by this omission.....

Half of the unspoiled places pictures are spoiled by lots of humanity, so I guess my definition of unspoiled and that of the HP folks are different.

Exactly. What is the definition of unspoiled? All those wonderful pictures of Cannon Beach in Oregon are carefully cropped so you don't see the houses sitting right there. But they're sure in the view when you go there.

Great... a list of 'unspoiled' places. Why not just say "somewhere in the world, these places exist" and give us a picture or two to go "Ah..., Oh..."

I'll bet this list will be 1/2 as long in 10 years...

Thanks for nothing, NatGeo.

Not the best pictures of some of the areas. How come they didn't use the photos that National Geographic used on the actual list?

Surprised Cape Breton island in Nova scotia is not there. It resemble Oregon, Big Sur. Great fiddlers, ultra friendly people.

So much for America and exceptional excellence. One coast with Oregon. Got to say, when I saw the article title and I said to myself "Oregon coast has to be among them". I was right. Wife and I did the full coast from Astoria to CA. The hh

Probably all nice. Though I hate sand, so if I'm forced to go to the coast I want a place with unbrellas, excellent bars, and cute girls, preferably topless

Amazing. I have never been to the sea. I wish I could visit one of these places someday! *sigh*
