Joe Manchin Party Switch? GOP Reportedly Enticing Democratic Senator-Elect (UPDATE)

Joe Manchin Party Switch

Republicans are reportedly in the midst of drawing up an incentive package that could potentially convince West Virginia Senator-elect Joe Manchin, currently the state's conservative Democratic governor, to jump ship and place an "R" next to his name.

(SCROLL DOWN FOR UPDATE)

Fox News reports Monday:

Aside from his pick of committee assignments (likely the Energy and Natural Resources Committee), Manchin might get support for one of his pet projects - a plant to convert coal to diesel fuel that has stalled under Democratic leadership in Washington.

If Manchin were to switch parties, the action would come with a promise of $1 billion in start-up funds for the coal conversion operation, as well as the important political significance of being able to campaign for reelection in 2012 against Barack Obama, who is currently highly unpopular in West Virginia.

Perhaps more importantly, it would tighten the Senate power balance, widening prospects for a 50-50 numerical stalemate (ties could be broken by Vice President Biden, however) if Senators Ben Nelson (D-Neb.) and Joe Lieberman (I-Conn.) were to decide to caucus with Republicans as well.

"He was elected as a Democrat and he has to go to Washington as a Democrat to try, in good faith, to make the changes in the party he campaigned on," one Manchin advisor told Fox News. "Now, if that doesn't work and Democrats aren't receptive, I don't know what possibilities that leaves open."

Many can't help wondering if Manchin's rapid exodus away from his own partisan past during his Senate campaign might actually signify his willingness to switch parties, however.

While battling Republican candidate John Raese, Manchin announced publicly that he was open to entirely repealing health care reform, that he'd fight to oppose the president on climate legislation and that both parties were "dead wrong."

His actions appeared so far removed from the Democratic platform that Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) was led to "suggest that the governor become a Republican and run against Rockefeller next time." Though the second part of that advice won't be necessary, the first part now at least looks like a possibility that Republicans are attempting to exploit.

UPDATE:

Joe Manchin's spokesman rejects rumors of a party switch, and a Senate GOP aide denies that Republican leaders made any offer, according to Roll Call. See their full story here.

If Manchin does this, he can be sure he will be challenged in his next primary by someone from the Tea Party or whatever the next incarnation of the extreme Republican right will be called in six years.

He was elected in a state that is mainly registered democrats and my word of advice to Mr. Manchin (being a WV resident) do it and the people of WV that put him there, won't re-elect him again. We stand on our promises in this state and he needs to remember to stand on his. There were alot of good hard working people that helped him get elected not the Republican party.

Nothing the GOP would try to gain power (beg, borrow, bribe and steal) will surprise me.

Don't think for a moment the other side isn't offering up packages to keep him in line.

Manchin is not going to switch, but this kind of talk drives up his value and the Dems will have to spend more to keep him on the reservation. He could end up with some sweet committee assignments, which is okay with the GOP since he's going to be a DINO anyway.
10:28 AM on 11/10/2010
So ... he'd be a RINO if he switched.

Or ... OR ...

He could be human and not fit neatly into any preconceived notions of what ALL Dems or ALL Repubs believe. Its called gray areas, and we all live in them ...

I think he'll vote with the Republicans most of the time, but stay in the Democratic party for now. I only hope he'll vote with the Democrats on the most important issues. If not, why would we need him, and why would he stay???

It wont happen. Joe Manchin understands that chaging parties is the ultimate flip flop in the eyes of the voters. Look what happened to Arlen Specter! He knows he would be clubbed to death in a republican primary. Just more factless propaganda initiated by Newscorp and echoed here.

There are several "Democrats" in name only who might at least join Joe Leiberman and declare themselves independent and willing to caucus with the highest bidder. I'm sure the Koch brothers would pony up a healthy war chest to insure their re-elections without Democratic Party support.

Should be illegal to switch parties after the voters have made their choice.

It seems to me that if you run as a democrat and are elected as a democrat that you have a contract with the voters. To violate this contract should be illegal.
