Cam Newton Reportedly Cheated At University Of Florida: Faced Potential Expulsion

Cam Newton Cheated

JOHN ZENOR   11/ 9/10 12:29 PM ET   AP

AUBURN, Ala. — Auburn athletic director Jay Jacobs said a report that Tigers quarterback Cam Newton faced possible expulsion from Florida for academic cheating is "sad" and reiterated that Newton is eligible both academically and athletically.

"These allegations and rumors about Cam Newton are unfortunate and sad because they seem intent on tearing down the reputation of a young man who has done everything we've asked him to do," Jacobs said in a statement Tuesday. "Cam has been and continues to be completely honest with us. Cam is, by all accounts, a great kid."

Foxsports.com reported Monday that Newton was caught cheating three times and was to appear for a hearing in front of Florida's Student Committee during the spring semester of 2009. The website reported that Newton turned in another student's paper with his name on it and handed in another paper that was later found to have been purchased off the Internet.

Newton transferred to Blinn Junior College in Brenham, Texas, where he played last season.

The Heisman hopeful landed at Blinn after an arrest at Florida in November 2008. Campus police said he stole a $1,700 laptop then threw it out his dormitory window when officers arrived to investigate. The charges were dropped last December when he completed a pretrial intervention program for first-time offenders. Newton has said he bought the stolen computer from someone else.

Auburn coach Gene Chizik called the academic allegations "garbage" during his weekly availability on Tuesday.

"Cam Newton is one of the guys on our football team that has not only excelled as a tremendous athlete," Chizik said."... I'm wasting my time addressing allegations that blow my mind that they're even out there, because there's federal privacy laws that dictate that these things don't get out in public.

"I'm standing up here on very important week trying to defend something that's garbage."

Chizik described Newton as a "great human being that comes from a great family" and addressed his quarterback's Heisman credentials.

"He's one of the leaders in the Heisman race because he deserves it. That's fact," Chizik said.

Newton's father, Cecil, declined comment on the academic allegations when reached by Associated Press on Tuesday, saying his "voice will be presented either through me or somebody else at a later time."

Cecil Newton did talk about the allegations earlier Tuesday on Paul Finebaum's syndicated sports talk radio show in Alabama.

"This is a character assassination attempt," he said on the show. "Who is going to profit and why are they are going to profit? We sure don't.

"I think there's a group of people who have a hidden agenda and don't want to see him as a Heisman nominee, let alone winner."

In Gainesville, Florida coach Urban Meyer said in a statement that neither he nor anyone on his staff leaked any information Newton's academic record, calling it a "ridiculous claim."

Meyer said, "For anyone to think that I or anyone on our staff may have leaked information about private student records to the media doesn't know us very well. It's a ridiculous claim and simply not true."

Jacobs said he couldn't speak about Newton's academic records because that would violate federal privacy laws.

"We will not go down that path or stoop to that level as others have apparently done," he said. "We will, however, emphatically say that Cam is eligible to play football at Auburn University both academically and athletically.

"I am proud of this young man and the progress he has made to be a better football player and a better man. We are truly blessed that Cam is a part of the Auburn family, and we support him 100 percent."

"Someone else stole it, Officer." "It's my friend's car, but I don't know his name or where he lives, Officer." "I found it, Officer."
Does anyone ever believe a criminal when they get caught with the stolen car, the dope, or the stolen merchandise? If YOU do, I've got some GREAT "investment opportunities" to share with you.
The fact that Newton admitted that he know he was in possession of a stolen computer should have landed his butt in jail. He was only let off because he's a sports person.

I think that shows a great amount of initiative for a star caliber college football player. If I remember correctly, there are several schools on probation for having the tutors do the players work. At least he allegedly did it on his own.

Hey! Big Whoop here. A college student buys a paper from a source that produces such documents and he puts his name on another student's work. This is certainly unprecedented stuff. I am quite certain that never happened at Arizona State University - or any other school in the USA - during the 1970s when I was a student. Ask any frat house (tongue firmly planted in cheek).

Big time college football is a business. Pay the players a salary, discontinue the sham that all players are "student-athletes" and get on with it. The bigger programs are already completely independent from the colleges in financing, and even the most ardent administrator-boosters admit that the primary reason for their attachment to the university is to bring in money and publicity.
But we seem to enjoy hanging on to our illusions. War Eagle y'all.

Who CARES!!? These are old charges. This kid has turned his life around, but someone from another school is trying to ruin it for him. These kids are poor while their schools and the agents are getting rich because of their hard work. The NCAA should re-write their archaic laws to let the guys make enough money while in school that they don't have to take under the table payments. As for the cheating, big woops! Not quite as bad as armed robbery really. Cameron Newton will be a very rich man in a few years and can tell everyone who made it hard for him to kiss his Nike's.

A lot of students do the stuff this man is accused of doing and athletes are not known for a great work ethic nor ADs for doing anything other than protecting their players (like HSs in Texas forcing a cheerleader to cheer for her alleged r-pist). That said, I don't know anything about these allegations being true or not. I hope there is justice in either exoneration or expulsion.

The FBI is now investigating the other allegation, that being SUPPOSEDLY trying to sell his services to MSU.

Cam seems like a good kid, but appearances can be deceiving. I hope none of these allegations are true, but usually it ends up being so. We'll see.

College football has to be the most corrupt of all sports including professional leagues. Multi billion dollar business and they don't have to pay the people who play except offer them a scholarship for an education that a lot never participate in. No money for the curriculum but they can pay their coaches multi million dollar contracts. Why not just start a minor league where a lot of these players could at least earn a little money while destroying their bodies trying to make the pros and let colleges be more about learning and teaching instead of the minor leagues for the professional leagues.
