17 Amazing Tattoos Of 90s Cartoon Characters (PHOTOS)

First Posted: 11/12/10 08:43 AM ET   Updated: 05/25/11 07:10 PM ET

The 90s have been coming into perspective more and more lately now that the requisite 20 years has passed before we can really be nostalgic about something. One thing is clear: the 90s produced some pretty amazing cartoons. Are we shocked to now see that people are permanently inking them on their skin? Not really, but it doesn't stop you from thinking "What were you thinking?" just a little bit. They may not be as regrettable as these or these, but you'll be amazed at some of the characters people chose to make the ultimate commitment to. Vote for your favorite!

i love "ahh real monsters," "the power puff girls" and "spunky"

surprised so many anti-tat comments. it's not like it is a new concept or even craze for that matter.

"Tattooing has been a Eurasian practice at least since around Neolithic times."

"Pre-Christian Germanic, Celtic and other central and northern European tribes were often heavily tattooed, according to surviving accounts. The Picts were famously tattooed (or scarified) with elaborate dark blue woad (or possibly copper for the blue tone) designs. Julius Caesar described these tattoos in Book V of his Gallic Wars (54 BC)."

"Tattooing in Japan is thought to go back to the Paleolithic era, some ten thousand years ago."

"Tattooing in the Western world today has its origins in Polynesia, and in the discovery of tatau by eighteenth century explorers. The Polynesian practice became popular among European sailors, before spreading to Western societies generally."

So, I am kinda surprised at how much people look down on those with ink here. I am the first to criticize the quality of the ink, and perhaps the wisdom of certain locations or thing (I mean facial tattoos... often not the smartest thing) but the amount of anti-ink sentiment here is amazing.

I am a Harvard educated educator, and I have 6 separate tattoos. All of them easily covered by things as simple as a t-shirt and watch for the situations where that is important, such as job interviews and work in general. The fact that I have ink has no bearing... on any part of my life other than the fact that I have ink.

Having ink is not a reflection on intelligence, it is not a marker of criminal activity, it does not mean one is in a gang. All it means is that I choose to adorn my body with artwork that is permanent.

We are clearly a generation hungry for self expression. We go out of our way to display our individuality, which is wonderful, I think. As a whole, we have lragely bucked tradition and ignored propriety. But the idea that anyone would resonate so much with any character from Rugrats, or Ren and Stimpy, or Beavis and Butthead that they would choose to have an enormous tattoo of that character prominently displayed as an expression of their individuality doesn't sit well with me. I'm all for tats, and have a couple myself, and I've never once regretted them. I can't imagine that any of these people have gone through life not regretting some of these. I mean, Rugrats? Really? That was the show that I only deigned to watch when I was home sick, miserable, and there was literally nothing else on but soap operas.

Then again, who am I to judge?
