British Prime Minister David Cameron touched down in China for a two-day visit yesterday in hopes of negotiating future trade deals with Chinese businesses in an effort to boost his own nation's sluggish economy, the Associated Press is reporting.

Though Cameron had previously vowed to raise human rights with his hosts, particularly in relation to the jailing of 2010 Nobel Peace Prize winner Liu Xiaobo, a keynote speech at Peking University saw the prime minister focusing exclusively on trade.

"The rise in economic freedom in China in recent years has been hugely beneficial to China and to the world," the AP quotes Cameron as saying. "I hope that in time this will lead to a greater political opening ... because I am convinced that the best guarantor of prosperity and stability is for economic and political progress to go in step together."

According to the Telegraph, Chinese President Hu Jintao couldn't resist a subtle dig at Britain's prime minister at a banquet last night. "You are the youngest prime minister Britain has had in the last 200 years, and most of your Cabinet members are very young," the 67-year-old Jintao is quoted as saying. "They are full of drive and energy." At 43, Cameron is Britain's youngest prime minister since the Earl of Liverpool in 1812.
