Soldier Reunites With Pen Pal 'Granny Dot' 18 Years Later

First Posted: 11/10/10 03:32 PM ET Updated: 05/25/11 07:10 PM ET

For 12 years, an Indiana woman known as "Granny Dot" wrote encouraging letters to soldiers serving abroad. Fearing that some soldiers may not be receiving mail from home, Granny Dot addressed her letters "to any serviceperson."

While serving in the Gulf War, Sgt. Brian Vasquez was so moved by Granny Dot's thoughtful letters that he decided to write her back.

Now, 18 years after the two exchanged letters, Vasquez reached out to thank her for her support.

CNN reunited Vasquez and Granny Dot on air.

What a sweet story. Granny Dot is a lovely lady, how wonderful of Brian to look her up to thank her. Thank you for your service to our country Brian! And Congratulations to Granny Dot and her husband on their 59th Anniversary.
