Google Attributes Disputed Islet To Wrong Country -- Twice

Disputed Island

MADRID — Google Inc. said Thursday its mapping service goofed twice by attributing a disputed islet off North Africa first to Morocco, and then to Spain, when the company's goal is to be neutral.

The two countries, close neighbors and allies who are prone to outbreaks of disagreement, inched toward military confrontation in the summer of 2002 over the rocky outcropping. The islet was inhabited only by goats when Moroccan troops occupied it, but Spain promptly sent warships to eject the soldiers.

Both countries claim the islet, which Spain calls Perejil, or parsley, and the Moroccans call Leila, meaning night. But, under a U.S.-brokered deal that ended the crisis the islet's status was declared under review.

Google Spain spokeswoman Marisa Toro said the search engine learned in July that its mapping service erroneously assigned the islet to Morocco. It is only about 250 meters (yards) off the coast of the North African kingdom, which is separated from Spain by the slim Strait of Gibraltar.

Google's geopolitical team at its headquarters in Mountain View, California, consulted with international bodies including the United Nations, and recently decided to declare the islet a disputed territory that belongs to neither Spain nor Morocco, she said. Engineers have been working to make the correction, she said.

But since Monday, Google Maps has been attributing the islet to Spain, or to neither country, depending on the wording that is typed into the search engine.

Toro said she could not pinpoint the cause.

"It is our mistake and we are working to resolve it," she said.

Google has been dragged into a territorial conflict on the other side of the Atlantic, too.

Nicaragua is carrying out river dredging in a disputed border area with Costa Rica, and the Nicaraguan official in charge of the project says he used Google's map system to decide where the work should be done.

In regards to the recent Nicaragua-Costa Rica flap, whatever happened to governments using charts authoritatively based on the official surveys?

It's not the rock in the water that's important. It's the territorial waters surrounding it that is what the dispute is really about. It means control of shipping lanes and fisheries.

Oh I see, thanks for explaining. I was wondering how rocks and goats could make people want to beat war drums.

I was going to claim it, but I don't see any beaches and clearly Google isn't allowing any privacy for the more exciting things to do.

Classic example of fighting over something that is worthless.
10:07 AM on 11/12/2010
oooh no, the Area of influence that the islet provides to Spain, in order to control navigation in the strait or to fight illegal crossing boats is prime.
it's not the rock, it's the territorial waters that come with it.

A P*ssing match over a pile of rocks inhabited by goats? It's time for women to run the world. Modern men have had thousands of years to work out their silly differences in some way other than hitting each other over the head with a rock - or a bomb. End result? Global warming, thousands of civilians killed every year over turf wars, as many rapes for the same reason. How ridiculous!

Do you seriously think that women would give a rat's patooty about a rock full of goats? These ARE men squabbling over a worthless piece of rock! Sorry the facts hurt.

So Ann Coulter, Michelle Bachman, Sharon Angle, Christine O'Donnell are not women? Do us a favor and keep your gender discrimination to yourself.

Funny. Almost every time Ann Coulter's name comes up here, she's labeled a man in drag. Christine O'Donnell was a puppet in the Sarah Palin mold:cute and brainless, and easily manipulated into thinking she had something to offer. Palin shows us what happens when an unqualified pretty face is accorded too much power. Madison Avenue has beguiled us into believing that a pretty face is also a trustworthy face. Sure there are dumb women in places of power. There's also Madelein Kunin, Ann Richardson (d), Rachel Maddow. Considering what an intelligent, capable female is up against to get noticed, they are more significant than 10 George Bushes - though none of them from Colter to Kunin, is responsible for the deaths of 100,000 Iraqis and 4500 American troops.

This reminds me of the uproar all throughout the media when the Rev. Wright dared to upbraid white racists and called upon whites to admit that they still had a lot of racism in them. It's Beck calling Obama a racist. It's only gender discrimination when someone sheds the light on male gender discrimination which is so ingrained as to be accepted as the norm. It's only class warfare when the rich are called on the carpet.

I live in Costa Rica and Ortega's little Google mistake doesn't surprise me. Nicaragua and Costa Rica have been arguing about this little area for 200 years, but who knew an iPhone application could cause so many problems. I have a video of Nicaragua's "military camp" on my blog. Looks like two teenagers sitting in a hut! It's the second posting on my site. www.happierthanabillionaire.com
