Users are noting on Twitter that Gmail appears to have gone down.

HuffPostTech blogger @CBMyers noted, "Facebook announces e-mail and Gmail goes down? #irony." @Mlinsey tweeted, "Gmail is down. Wish I had an invite for that Facebook "Gmail killer"!" Another user, @megpickard, wrote, "So Facebook launches its email service - nicknamed Gmail Killer - and Gmail goes down. That was quick!"

HuffPostTech is having trouble accessing Gmail as well--we're seeing the error message, "We're sorry, but your Gmail account is temporarily unavailable. We apologize for the inconvenience and suggest trying again in a few minutes."

As of 4:00PM ET, Google has no mention of a Gmail outage on the Google App Status Dashboard, where you can check on Gmail's status. You can also get updates on Gmail via the live Twitter feed below.

Are you having problems? Let us know below.

Zuckerberg himself said that Facebook Messages isn't an email killer... sensational headlines aren't going to help you, HP...

I sure is was just a coincidence - a very well paid coincidence.

Wait a minute... who the heck has been saying this is a "Gmail Killer?" A bunch of random people on Twitter? Don't they realize that if this Facebook messages thing is going to take over emailing (which it isn't), then most certainly it would take over publishing inane little snippets of bile to all your supposed friends? #irony indeed.

And why does everything have to be an everything killer? I'm sick of the rampant merchandising and marketing that consumers themselves take part in by blindly following little slogans like that. It doesn't encourage people to sit down and actually evaluate what function a certain piece of technology serves. People end up consuming technology they don't need merely for consumption's sake. Do we really need a million different ways to access our email and send messages to one another? There are bound to be a few different and convenient ways to do it, but saying something is the "something killer" just reinforces the idea that we can't hold two competing technologies in our hands at the same time and be happy with the diversity.

Remember how the iPad was supposed to be the netbook killer? Well netbook sales are certainly down from last year, but that was predicted even before the iPad was announced. And their sales are expected to double by 2013, according to ABI Research.

So lets cut the "everything killer" talk and try to evaluate technologies as they come out, instead of doing the marketing ourselves.

Gmail was laughing so hard at the thought of a 'Gmail Killer' that it accidentally interrupted service for a few folks...

I was having problems this morning (Japan time), but it's obviously back up.

Dear GMail admin, may I please have a setting where all facebook mail is sent directly to trash with a reply saying that it will never be answered?

I am very happy with my Gmail account............and am not interested in a Facebook email account.......

Whatever journalists termed this as "gmail killer" is an idiot.

No problems with my Gmail.

(P.S. Here's a loyal Gmail user who will not be switching over to whatever ridiculous thing facebook has come up with. My gmail can catch email from all my other accounts, I leave it open, so mail comes in instantaneously, the inbox space is virtually limitless, and I can even make phone calls right from the inbox!)

I didn't have any problems with mine either. I leave mine open, too and I have been receiving mail just fine today.

I didn't notice any downtime - unless it was quite brief. I never saw the error message mentioned n the article.
