NEW YORK -- The competition to manufacture New York City's next official taxicab has been narrowed to three automakers who each came up with similar tall, boxy designs that are more like minivans than traditional sedans.

The finalists announced Monday are Ford Motor Co., Nissan North America Inc. and Karsan USA. Karsan is a Turkish company that makes cars for such brands as Fiat and Hyundai.

The New York City yellow taxi fleet of more than 13,200 taxis is now made up of 16 vehicle models from nine different manufacturers, including nearly 4,000 hybrids. The anchor of the fleet is Ford's Crown Victoria, which was recently discontinued.

None of the vehicles on the road now was originally designed to be used as a taxi, which typically drives 70,000 miles a year and has its doors slammed 60 to 70 times a day. All were existing automobiles that were then specially outfitted by garages to meet the city's requirements for cabs.

For the next official taxi to replace the Crown Victoria, City Hall wanted to change that.

"Although the city has long set standards for our taxis, we have never before worked with the auto industry to design a taxicab especially for New York City – that is, until now," Mayor Michael Bloomberg said.

Of the three submissions, the Nissan design most resembles a traditional minivan. The Karsan proposal looks a bit like a Smart Car and the Ford submission evokes a sort of European ambulance.

The city declined to make the three finalist proposals available Monday because the information in them is still proprietary. Officials provided photographs but scant details about the proposed vehicles, their features or potential fuel efficiencies.

Taxi commissioner David Yassky briefly described Nissan's design as the roomiest and the most ambitious in terms of sustainability. The automaker's proposal "aspires to a fully electric vehicle at some point," Yassky said.

Yassky said Ford is a trusted partner with its history making Crown Victoria taxis and other models, and Karsan offered a proposal with an eye-pleasing design, roomy interior and accessibility.

Earlier this year the Taxi and Limousine Commission put out a request for proposals for the exclusive right to make the taxi of tomorrow.

The city asked all proposals to consider the roominess of the interior, driver comfort, environmental impact, maintenance and repair costs and exterior design.

It also asked for ideas to update the partition that divides the driver from the passengers.

The three finalists were chosen from seven submissions.

New Yorkers can go online, see the three finalist designs and vote on features they want to see in the next official taxi – choosing from such possibilities like sunroofs and electrical outlets to charge computers and cell phones.

The three finalists have been asked to submit their best and final offering within the next month.

A winning design will be announced early next year; the chosen automaker will have the right to exclusively provide the standard taxicab for 10 years.

Officials expect the new vehicle to be on the road by the fall of 2014.

Any of the two that are not Ford, Ford don't make cars in the USA any more, all cars and parts are made in Mexico now!

Go for the Ford.
But only if the conversion happens in NY State / City.

The Ford is the ugliest of the three, but not by very much. Even so, I hope it wins for the simple reason that it'll keep Americans in jobs building almost every part of the vehicle.

It's also a proven design, on the road for several years, here and in Europe. The others are only concepts.

Dumb! We need the government to design a taxi like we need the East German Trabant (Google it if you want). How about if free markets and free enterprise "choose" our taxis and everything else in our lives?

Yeah, free market police and fire! And a tollbooth on every corner!

Here's a thought, Rooster - if NYC has an official Taxi and every cabbie in the next 5 or so years is driving the exact same vehicle, then the cost for parts and maintenance of these vehicles goes down, which helps to control fare costs. This is why police departments have fleets of the exact same car (generally a Ford Crown Vic or a Dodge Charger SXT or RT, sometimes mixed as older cars are phased out).

Except the NYC taxis are not all part of one fleet -- there are multiple companies owning fleets of varying sizes. Not sure how much standardization would help in that case.

Because taxis are privately owned. Police cars are not. Many taxis in NYC are owned and operated by individual private owners who have paid the fee to the city for a "medallion" which allows for legal operation in the city. Medallions cost from $600,000 to $800,000. At that price they ought to be able to drive whatever they want don't you think?

Only one has a photograph, which is the Ford. The others only show concepts.

The Karsan has a nice seating arrangement, but I honestly don't know why you would pick a company that doesn't really engineer anything.

Because it's cheap.

Initial Thoughts: The suspension on a minivan (especially the ones used for manhattan use) is not durable enough to sustain a ride that is at all desirable for the riders.

Between the Streets: The conditions of New York City streets are abysmal. In the early 1990s a fleet of british cabs were brought to New York to see if they would work. Their primary appeal was their amazing turn ratio, however after a few weeks their suspension was so torn up that they could no longer operate at all.

Final Verdict: New York City should replace the aging fleet of NYPD Crown Victorias with new American made sedans and sell the retired police cruisers to the cab operators at a discount. Purchasing minivans from nissan or even ford will end in disaster.
02:15 AM on 11/16/2010
The Ford is not a minivan, it's the proven Transit Connect, which is designed as a urban-friendly commercial vehicle (and was awarded 2010 North American Truck of the Year). It has a 1,600 pound cargo capacity (that's 5 200 lb people plus 600 lb. of luggage). So the suspension has to be beefier than that of a typical minivan or sedan.

NYPD would just replace their Crown Vics with Chargers, which wouldn't fare much better on NYC roads than the minivans would due to their suspension setup. If they got the cops a some real SUVs, however (Jeep Grand Cherokee/Dodge Durango, Ford Expedition, and Chevy Tahoe, because almost every other "SUV" is really a station wagon in disguise), that plan may work.

I like the top one best- looks the least like a minivan or SUV.

how about given the current state of our economy, you pick ford AND have them made in the US AND if their design isn't the best, get some govt money dedicated to alternative energy to help them get up to speed. we really have to start thinking like this. keep our money at home when we can for the time being.

I'm amused. The way the cratered streets are in NYC..you don;t need wheels ..you need treads....!! I wonder how quickly they will break down. bring back the checker marathon...!
